Latest trends in intensive care discussed

CHANDIGARH, March 25 — Latest trends in internal care management came up for discussion at Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Update 2000 at Government Medical College, Sector 32, here today. Lesser deliberated aspects of treatment units and involvement of different wings needed for intensive care support were highlighted.

Prof K.K. Gombar, Head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, referred to few prominent areas of operation, including snake bite, poisonous substances and post-operative complications.

Inaugurating, the update programme, Ms Vineeta Rai, Adviser to the UT Administrator, stressed on awareness of anaestheologists. There was also a need to ensure an increase in number of such doctors in view of the latest trends and findings, she said.

Dr Gombar highlighted the importance of trauma teaching programmes and stressed on the management aspect.

Dr S. Bangoo from Richmond, USA, spoke on devices to evaluate the reaction of the anaesthesia agents in his paper on BIS monitors: role in anesthesia. Another interesting paper was on Lactate measurement: importance in intensive care by Dr R.K. Mani, Apollo Hospital, Delhi.

Prominent speakers included Prof H.L. Kaul, Prof Harwir Singh, Prof B. Chabra, Dr G.P. Dhureja, Prof J.S. Wig, Dr Yatin Mehta, Lt-Col A.R. Gupta and Prof D.K. Tempe about 250 delegates from the region are participating in the programme.Back



 

Chhuttani Centre for PGI

CHANDIGARH, March 25 — The Governing and Institute Body of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research has accepted the offer of the Tilok Tirath Vidyavati Chhuttani Charitable Trust for setting up Dr P.N. Chhuttani Centre for Tropical Medicine and Communicable Diseases at the institute.

Disclosing this here yesterday, Dr I.C. Pathak, Managing Trustee of the trust, said Dr Chhuttani had left a large sum of money for the trust which he founded well before his death. He said the centre would be financed by the trust with an annual grant of Rs 50 lakh.

The Advisory Committee of the centre would help the PGI to structure the functioning of the centre through inputs from its clinical and basic sciences departments, he added.Back




 

100 delegates attend conference on health

CHANDIGARH, March 25 — Nearly 100 delegates from public health organisations in the region are participating in the third annual conference of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (North Zone Chapter) at the PGI here today.

Dr P.L. Jindal, director of the General Health Services, Haryana, in the inaugural session dwelt in detail on various emerging and re-emerging diseases during the current times. He also dwelt on the ‘lifestyle’ diseases like diabetes mellitus and cancer, beside others.

Prof S.K.Sharma, director of the PGI, inaugurated the conference.

Prof Rameshwar Sharma, a former Director of the Indian Institute of Management and Research, delivered the key-note address.He said that public health in the national context was usually wrongly equated with family planning.

The following session featured a symposium on reproductive health and HIV. Other prominent speakers on the occasion included Dr V.K.Behl, Assistant Commissioner, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Jagjit Singh Sood, Prof Bhusan Kumar and Dr Archana Sud among others.

Prof Rajesh Kumar, Head of the Department of Community Centre, mentioned the broad framework of the conference and its benefits in community welfare activities.Back

Neha, Isha enter third round

CHANDIGARH, March 25 — Neha Singh and Isha Toor moved ahead in the league on the second day of the Chandigarh State Lawn Tennis Championship by beating their opponents, Pallavi and Shaloo, respectively, at the Sector 10 CLTA Courts here today. International player Tushar Liberhan and Ardaman, another fancied player, also sailed into the third round of the under-16 section by beating Karan Patnaik and Digvijay, respectively.

Cricket tourney: Mohali Gymkhana XI beat Prudential Cricket Club by 54 runs today in the B.S. Duggal Memorial Cricket Tournament being played here at the Sector 27 Government Senior Secondary School. Mohali XI made 184 runs for three wickets in 20 overs, while Prudential CC were all out for 130 runs.

Sunil skipper: Sunil Kumar of Customs and Central Excise will lead the UT senior team in the 56th Senior National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy at Trichur (Kerala). According to Mr Ravinder Talwar, President of the Chandigarh Football Association, the other members of the team are Mukesh Kumar, Navjot Singh, Anil Saini, Vinod Kanwar, Deepak, Sanjeev Kumar, Vinay Kanwar, Sanjeev Junior, Varinder Kanwar, Rajeev, Harminder Pal, Rajeev Rattan, Naresh, Balhar Singh, Vishal, Jatinder Singh, Jasbir Singh and Brijesh.

Mr Dinesh Sharma and Mr D.K. Sharma will accompany the team as the coach and manager, respectively. The city team will play its first match on March 29 against Orissa.

Basketball final: In the final of the Intra Mural Sports Department Basketball Tournament at the Sector 46 Sports Complex, the UT coaches team defeated Ministerial staff, 45-26, with the halftime score being 21-12. Earlier, in one of the other league matches, the SAI coaches' team went down fighting to the Ministerial staff team, 9-18.Back


 

Mountain bikers' battle on

CHANDIGARH, March 25 — The first Hero National Mountain Bike Championships began here today with the Hero Cycle Rally flagged off in the morning by Mr Suresh Munjal, Managing Director of the Hero Cycles Limited. Later, Mr R.S. Verma, Chief Secretary of Haryana, declared the meet open. Nearly 160 cyclists pedalled their way to the forest area near Panjab University, venue of the meet. Ms Shanta Abhilashi, Mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, flagged off the girls' rally in the afternoon.

In the men's competition, a particpant, Surinder Pal Singh, took a wrong turn and one-minute penalty was imposed on him after a protest was lodged.

Tomorrow, cross-country races will begin at 6.30 am, while Mr S.S. Dhindsa Union Sports Minister and President of the Cycling Federation of India, will distribute prizes at 12.30 pm.

The results of various country point-to-point races are as follows: Men's (6.2 km) — Surinder Pal Singh (Chandigarh) 1, time 18 min 53.86 sec; Mohan Singh (Haryana) 2; Zorawar Singh (Punjab) 3.

Women's (5.5 km) — Shveta Suneja (Chandigarh) 1, time 13 min 23.88 sec; Kirandeep Kaur (Chandigarh) 2; Rajani (Punjab) 3.

Junior girls (5.5 km) — Shivika Arora (Chandigarh) 1, time 13 min 28.05 sec; Gaganpreet Kaur (Punjab) 2; Manpreet Kaur (Chandigarh) 3.
