Gurpreet Kaur is Ms GC-46

CHANDIGARH, March 8 — The Sector 46 Government College organised Girls’ Day to comemorate Women’s Day. Ms Gurpreet Kaur, a final year student, was adjudged Ms GC-46, while Ms Harpreet Kaur and Ms Priank Chhabra got the first and second runner-up prizes. Maj D.P. Singh, principal of the college, gave away the prizes.

New course: The Sector 28 Industrial Training Institute will introduce from July this year a new course in cutting and tailoring. This is being done as a sequel to a suggestion made by the Administrator, Lieut Gen JFR Jacob (retd).

According to Dr S.K. Aggarwal, Director, technical education, all formalities, including affiliation with the National Council of Vocational Training of the DGET of the Ministry of Labour, are being obtained so as to start the course from the next academic session. There will be 16 students in the first unit of the course.

Dr Aggarwal said that though a similar course was available at Government Polytechnic for Women in Sector 10, the training would also be available to male students at the Sector 28 institute.

Quiz competition: The local DAV College won the Sardar Niranjan Singh rolling trophy in an inter-college quiz competition on “Indian Aviation and Tourism” organised by the national Institute of Professional techniques at Tagore Theatre here last evening. Twentyfour teams participated in the competition.

Prize distribution : Pradeep Virk was adjudged best student of Government College for men, Sector 11, here. He was also given Roll of Honour for standing first in BA II in college by securing more than 75 per cent marks. Gaurav Sood also got Roll of Honour by securing first position in BA I with 75 per cent marks. In all 245 students received prizes. Thirteen students were awarded Roll of Honour, 30 got college colours, 44 got certificates of Distinction while remaining 163 students got special prizes for excellence in academics.

Seminar for French universities

CHANDIGARH, March 8 — The Indo-French International Education Development and Research Services organised a higher education seminar for French universities here yesterday.

Speaking on the occasion, Lieut-Col GPS Patheja (retd), Director of the Centre for Training and Employment of Punjab Youth, Government of Punjab, said while preparing the prospectus, the aspirations of the students intending to study abroad must be kept in mind.

Saying that there were no shortcuts to success, he added that France offered better study options as other foreign universities were over-crowded.

Earlier, the Director of the Indo-French, Capt Deepak Kumar, informed that education in France was about four times cheaper that other countries. And over 70 per cent of courses were offered in English, he added.

Though the Indian youth had quality brains yet they were short of opportunities. For the benefit of the students of the region, the institute was the first to start the quality higher education in the French universities, he claimed.

Ms Meena Kumari, Chief Councillor, informed that the institute, which was involved in the education and research activities since 1993, had started the education in French universities for the benefit of the brilliant students.

Prominent among those present were Mr DP Malik, Director of the Chandigarh station of AIR, and Air Cdre Sohan Pal Singh (retd).Back

Firm director gets RI

KHARAR, March 8 — Mr Sanjay Agnihotri, Judicial Magistrate, yesterday sentenced a person to undergo regorous imprisonment for a period of eight months and to pay a fine of Rs 1,15,000/- in a complaint filed under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The accused N.J. Durani issued three cheques dated 9-6-1993 for Rs 30000, 11-6-1993, for Rs 30000 and 21-6-1993 for Rs 50000 and the cheques were presented by the complainant in the bank which were returned back as “not arranged funds”. A notice was issued to the accused through counsel but nothing was paid. A complaint was filed.

The judge sentenced the accused to undergo regorous imprisonment for eight months and to pay a fine of Rs 1,15000, and in case of default of payment of fine he is sentenced him to undergo regorous imprisonment for two months.Back


 

Suit to come up for hearing on March 9

CHANDIGARH, March 8 — In a statement before a city court yesterday, President of the Sector 17 District Court Bar Association, Mr N.K. Nanda, said no posters or other publicity material would be glued on the walls during the elections.

Deposing before UT Civil Judge (junior division), Mr K.K. Goel, the President also stated that the District Bar Association also would not permit the pasting of publicity material. The suit will now come up on March 9 for further proceedings.

Terming the “destruction of beauty” by pasting of publicity material as “illegal”, plaintiff Arunjeev Singh Walia, in the suit against advocate Harish Chander Gupta, Amar Singh Chahal, N.K. Nanda, Amarjit Gujral, Kamaljit Lamba, Anita Ahuja and Malkiat Singh Jandiala, had earlier stated that the act was also in violation of the UT Advertisement Control Order, besides being an infringement of his civil rights.Back
