'Schemes worth crores in Ambala' AMBALA, Jan 24 Ambala district has made tremendous progress in the field of development since last year when the government headed by Mr Om Prakash Chautala took over, Mr Surjeet Singh Sonda, District Ambala INLD President, claimed. He further said that district development agency had spent Rs 2.96 crore on various development schemes undertaken by it. The Municipal Committee, Ambala City, had spent Rs 37.01 lakh, whereas the Municipal Committee, Ambala Sadar, Rs 67.76 lakh on various schemes concerning the department of the area, the note said. Mr Sonda also said that Rs 47.89 lakh had been received by the Panchayati Raj Department for construction of streets and drains under HRDF schemes out of which Rs 17.26 lakh had been utilised by the department. He also said that Rs 265.67 lakh had been received this month for works like the construction of streets, drains, school room, ring bundh, veterinary hospital quarters and cremation ground. It further stated that 22 schemes worth Rs 203.07 lakh had been approved by the government for the Public Health Department. First Haryana Cong list today CHANDIGARH, Jan 24 While the INLD and the BJP are still fighting over the number of seats to be shared by them in the ensuing Haryana Assembly elections, the Congress is likely to release the first list of its candidates tomorrow. According to informed sources, a two-member committee, comprising Mr Motilal Vora and Mr Madhavrao Scindia, has gone through the panels of candidates prepared by the state Congress Election Committee, which had recommended more than one candidates for several constituencies. The two senior party leaders talked to the members of the State Election Committee separately before scrutinising the panels submitted by them. The sources say the two-member committee has succeeded in reducing the big panels to one-candidate recommendation for most of the constituencies. However, for certain constituencies, Mr Vora and Mr Scindia have recommended more than one name. Their recommendations will now go to the Congress Working Committee which has been converted into the Parliamentary Board for the final decision. It is learnt that while the CWC will take its time to decide about the candidates in those constituencies for which it has received the names of more than one aspirants, the party will release tomorrow the names of candidates for those constituencies for which only one name has been recommended by Mr Vora and Mr Scindia. The sources say that conscious of the fact that the party will be fighting virtually for its survival in the coming elections in Haryana, senior state leaders by and large avoided making the issue of grant of the ticket to their favourite candidates as a prestige issue. There was unity of views at meetings of the State Election Committee that only those candidates whose chances of winning the elections were great should be recommended. The large panels for certain constituencies are explained by the desire of senior leaders to prove to their followers and supporters that they did espouse their cause in the State Election Committee. If a leader insisted that the name of a particular aspirant should be included in the panel, the others did not oppose as part of a tacit understanding among the members of the committee. Wherever a particular candidate was recommended by a particular member, his name was mentioned against the name of the candidate. The sources say that the high command had made it clear that if the ticket was given on the recommendation of a particular member to a candidate, that member would be held responsible for the victory or defeat of that candidate. The sources say the meetings of the State Election Committee were held in a cordial atmosphere and the past bitterness among the four senior leaders Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Mr Bhajan Lal, Mr Birender Singh and Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewala was absent. Meanwhile, the central
BJP leadership has called leaders of the Haryana BJP to
Delhi this evening. It is believed that the central
leadership wants to seek the views of the state leaders
on the tentative arrangement worked out at a meeting
between the INLD supremo, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, and the
BJP President, Mr Kushabhau Thakre, yesterday. |
Sampat nomination on January 27 FATEHABAD, Jan 24 The Finance Minister of Haryana Professor Sampat Singh, started his poll campaign by addressing party workers in the local PWD Rest House here yesterday. The INLD MP from Sirsa Dr Sushil Indira, District INLD (women wing) President Krishan Poonia, Vice-President Atam Parkash, block INLD President Mohan Lal Juneja, were present at the meeting. Prof Sampat Singh said he would file his nomination paper from the Fatehabad assembly seat on January 27. He said the state Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, would also be present. A group of INLD workers from the adjoining Bhattu Kalan constituency expressed their anger with the INLD high command decision to field Mr Sampat Singh from Fatehabad instead of the Bhattu Kalan assembly segment. They asked him to contest from Bhattu Kalan or field his wife Mrs Krishana Sampat Singh from there. They said they would not support any other candidate of the party. The minister, however, asked them to keep their demand with the INLD high command at Rohtak tomorrow. Meanwhile, the district
election office has started giving training to the
electorate here for the use of electronic voting machines
(EVM's) which will be put into service in the Fatehabad
and Bhattu Kalan assembly segments of this district. In
the first phase, training is being imparted to the
government officials who will be on election duty. |
Chautala to contest from Narwana
too CHANDIGARH, Jan 24 Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Chief Minister of Haryana, will contest the coming Assembly poll from two constituencies. A press statement issued by the INLD here today said Mr Chautala would also contest from Narwana for which he would file his nomination papers on February 2. Earlier, Mr Chautala had announced that he would seek-re-election from Rori in Sirsa district. The INLD President, it may be recalled, had contested these two seats in the last Assembly elections too. While in Rori Mr Chautala was victorious, Congress nominee Randeep Singh Surjewala, had upset his applecart at Narwana in Jind district. While announcing his decision to contest from Narwana, Mr Chautala appealed to the people "not to betray his trust in them this time". He criticised his rival, Mr Randeep Singh Surjewala, who is also in the fray, and Randeep Singh's father and former HPCC President Mr S.S. Surjewala, for allegedly misleading the people by projecting themselves as the future Chief Ministers. Mr Birender Singh,
another former HPCC President, whose constituency Uchana
Kalan falls in Jind district, were also criticised by the
Haryana Chief Minister for exploiting the name of Late
Sir Chhotu Ram, who was Birender Singh's grandfather. |

The association, in a memorandum sent to the Chief Minister, said that the instrument industry was facing serious problems due to the non-availability of electricity for the past one month. There were frequent breakdowns, low voltage and no schedule for power cuts in the area for the past several weeks. The industrial units, engaged in exports, could not supply goods in time to exporters. A large number of unit could not afford power generating sets. Recently an export order of Rs 10 crore for the supply of scientific instruments like microscopes and glassware had been cancelled by a foreign buyer because the exporter had expressed his inability to supply the goods in time fixed by the buyer, the memorandum added. The association said
that the exporters were paying heavy rates of interest to
the banks, while the letter credit received from the
foreign buyers were being cancelled for not supplying
goods in time. In case the situation did not improve, a

The President of the All-India Brahmin Mahasabha, Mr Mange Ram Sharma, told mediapersons here yesterday that the decision in favour of the proposed rally was taken at a meeting of the action committee of the manch on Saturday as representations to several political leaders, including the Prime Minister and presidents of the BJP and the Congress against the reservation policy of the country had fallen on deaf ears.
