India lose by 28 runs

MELBOURNE, Jan 12 (PTI) — India maintained their losing streak, going down by 28 runs to Australia in the one-day triangular cricket series tonight despite a century by opener Saurav Ganguly.

After the 0-3 whitewash in the Test series against Australia, the Indians lost the second consecutive one-dayer, two days after allowing Pakistan to snatch victory in Brisbane.

Ganguly overcame his rather indifferent form on the tour with 100 runs before foolishly running himself out by not grounding the bat while Rahul Dravid finally came good making 60 runs.

But the Indians could notch up only 241 for six wickets in the allotted 50 overs chasing Australia’s 269 for seven, built around an excellent 115 by Ricky Ponting. Pakistan has won both its opening matches against Australia and India.

An irresponsible Sachin Tendulkar let down a packed house of over 70,000 by taking a risky run to be sent back to the pavilion for a mere 12, having been given a life when he was only on five. Against Pakistan his contribution was just 13.

India continued with their familiar act of gaining early advantage only to squander the initiative as Australia, down at 19 for two in the fourth over, bounced back strongly.

Ricky Ponting scored his sixth one-day hundred off only 121 balls (9 x 4, 1 x 6) and raised a 99-run third wicket partnership with Michael Bevan (41) and another 71 runs with Damien Martyn for the fifth wicket after skipper Steve Waugh chose to take first strike on a batsman friendly track.

India started disastrously when opener V.V.S. Laxman, retained for the tournament after his superb 167 in the third Test at Sydney, failed for the second time in a row by falling to paceman Glenn McGrath for 2. Pinch-hitter Samir Dighe (3) fared equally bad till his agony was ended by Damien Fleming.

Ganguly kept one end up and produced his typically smooth offside shots and India seemed to regain initiative in his racy 37-run third wicket stand with Tendulkar.

But Tendulkar, who was lucky when young paceman Brett Lee failed to grasp a return catch off a leading edge, went for a very risky second run but failed to beat Shane Lee’s superb throw to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist to do the rest.

Ganguly (100 — 127 b, 10 x 4) kept the score moving, but Dravid continued to struggle for runs as the asking rate steadily mounted and India, at 159 for three, were left needing 110 runs in the last 15 overs.

Ganguly reached his century, but was run out to the very next ball. The batsman pushed Fleming towards mid-off and seemed to have enough time to complete the single, but paid the penalty for not grounding the bat as Andrew Symonds found the mark with a direct hit.

The dismissal led to protests from a predominantly Indian section of the crowd in the southern stand end which threw empty water bottles into the ground and forced play to be stopped for about 15 minutes.

The crowd apparently was under the impression that Ganguly had made the ground and play resumed after the debris was cleared and both Dravid and Robin Singh appealed for calm.

Youhana stars in Pak victory

CANBERRA, Jan 12 (Reuters) — Yousuf Youhana smashed 152 from 121 balls to lead Pakistan to a 37-run win over an Australian Country XI in a one-day tour match today.

The Pakistan middle-order batsman hammered 16 fours and a six to lift the touring side to an impressive total of 283 for six from 48 overs after rain briefly halted play.

Under the Duckworth-Lewis calculation for rain-hit games, the Country XI’s target was revised from 284 to 283 from 48 overs.

Opener Adam Shields made 65 and number three Brian May hit 83 to give the locals some hope but they finished on 245 for six.

Pakistan won their opening two matches of the triangular one-day series with Australia and India this week. Their next game is against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Pakistan manager, Brigadier Muhammad Nasir, said little could be read into Wednesday’s result but he was concerned about the repeated failings of his team’s top-order batting.

“The game was good as far as practice goes but we’ve still got to find some batting form,” he said.

Raman lifts TT singles title

LUCKNOW, Jan 12 (PTI) — Former champion S. Raman played a thrilling four-game encounter to upstage four-time winner Chetan Baboor and clinched the 61st Senior National Table Tennis title here today.

Mouma Das of Petroleum Sports Control Board (PSCB) won the women’s crown outplaying her team-mate N.R. Indu in straight games.

Raman spoiled Baboor’s hopes of winning the national title five times in a row with a 21-19, 10-21, 21-6, 21-18 win over the top seed.

Baboor, the only Indian in the world’s top 100, never looked at ease against a determined Raman.

The defending champion conceded the first set 19-21 and then staged a remarkable comeback winning the second 21-10.

But, too many unforced errors saw Baboor surrender tamely in the next two games which he lost 6-21 and 18-21.

Mauma beat Indu 25-23, 21-16, 21-14 in a one-sided final after defending champion Poulomi Ghatak was ousted in the semifinal stage taking the sheen out of the championship.

The mixed doubles title was won by the pair of Subhajit Saha and M.S. Maithili, who defeated the duo of . Kamal and T. Pradeepa 15-21, 21-17, 21-12.

Earlier in the day, Baboor drubbed Arup Basak in a gruelling five-game thriller 19-21, 14-21, 22-20, 21-17, 21-14 in the first semifinal while Raman got the better of S. Rai 21-16, 21-11, 21-16.

In the women’s semis, Mouma downed teammate Montu Ghosh 21-15, 21-17, 17-21, 23-21 while Indu sent Ghatak packing, 21-19, 18-21, 21-17.

From Our Sports Reporter

LUDHIANA, Jan 12 — Holders Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, began their title hunt in a style with an easy 9-0 victory over east zone runners-up, Ranchi University in the All-India Inter-Varsity (inter-zonal) Hockey Tournament for men which started at the Astro Turf ground of the Punjab Agricultural University here today.

In a pool ‘A’ match GND University surged ahead in the 9th minute when forward Tejbir Singh scored a field goal. In the 25th minute Lakhwinder Singh found the target off a penalty corner rebound.

After changing ends, GND varsity consolidated the lead (3-0) in the 39 minute through Jatinder Singh. Two minutes later, Gabbar Singh and in the 43rd minute full back Sharanjit Singh further cemented the lead (5-0).

Ranchi University tried to reduce the margin as they earned two penalty corners (50th and 57th minutes) but failed to capitalise on these chances. On the other hand, GND University pumped in four more goals through Gabbar Singh (2) Manjit Singh and Kuljinder Singh to wrap up the issue quiet comfortably 99-0.

In a pool ‘C’ match, north zone runners-up Panjab University, Chandigarh, trounced Sambalpur University in an identical fashion (9-0) after leading 2-0 at half time.

Jatinder Kumar put his team ahead in the 15th minute through a penalty corner conversion and just one minute before the breather Manmohan Singh made it 2-0.

After the break, Gurpreet Singh found the target four times, Manvir Singh twice while Manmohan Singh converted a penalty corner to complete the rout (9-0).

Best is yet to come, says Agassi

MELBOURNE, Jan 12 (Reuters) — World No 1 tennis player Andre Agassi says his best may be yet to come.

Agassi served up the warning to his rivals after launching his year with a 6-2, 6-4 win over South Africa’s Wayne Ferreira today at the Colonial Classic exhibition tournament, a warm-up event for next week’s Australian Open.

“I have way too much appreciation these days for what it takes to come back again and I have a hunch that if I slipped that would be the end of it,’’ said the 29-year-old Agassi, who finished last year at the top of the rankings after having slipped to 122 in 1997.

“My goal is to hit every level I feel I can hit with my game.

“I still felt motivated highly at the end of last year and even now. I believe if I stay healthy, get fitter, I can play even better tennis.’’

Agassi, who arrived in Melbourne last week with girlfriend and former women’s world No 1 Steffi Graf, won the French Open and US Open last year to become only the fifth player to win all four Grand Slam tournaments.

“As an athlete you want to feel like you saw your best and I still think that’s ahead of me,’’ said Agassi.

Salgaocar meet E. Bengal

CALCUTTA, Jan 12 — Title holders Salgaocar appear favourites on current form though East Bengal will hope to exploit home conditions when they clash in a crucial match in the National Football League here tomorrow.

In another match here, Tollygunge Agragami meet Dempo Sports Club at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium.

Salgaocar, with 14 points from six matches, are placed second in the high-profile league behind another Goa outfit, Churchill Brothers, who have gleaned 15 points. Churchill, however, have played a match more.

Salgaocar will miss the services of veteran striker Bruno Coutinho, who has not accompanied the team here as he is unfit.

In Coutinho’s absence, Brazilian striker Joao Dos Santos will be required to take on extra load against the East Bengal defence which has looked porous and disjointed.

The Salgaocar halfline, spearheaded by two Nigerians — gamemaker Habib Adikunle and the hardworking Gbenga Lawal — has looked in fine fettle and East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmick will have to devise a strategy to cut off the Goans’ supply line.

Salgaocar also has a strong defence line with the rocksolid Franky Barreto and Roberto Fernandes as stoppers and Roque Pereira and Francis Coelho managing the wings.

The match at Salt Lake Stadium promises to be exciting with East Bengal keen to give Salgaocar a run for their money to keep their fading title hopes alive. They have so far garnered eight points from six matches with two wins and an equal number of draws.

“We have to win. We have a lot of matches left and if we can get our pieces together we can still win the title,” Bhowmick said.

Describing Salgaocar as a ‘good team’, Bhowmick said a win would definitely boost the morale of his outfit.

The red and yellow brigade would, however, be hamstrung by the absence of an indisposed Carlton Chapman while Bijen Singh would take the field despite his injury.

But the silver lining for the city giants would be the return of Ghanaian stopper Jackson Agyopong who had to sit out the last match against Dempo following a double booking.

Akhtar has hyper-mobile joints: coach

MELBOURNE, Jan 12 (PTI) — The controversy over Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar’s bowling action is partially due to his supple limbs and his ability to hyper-extend his elbow and wrist, says the bowling coach who has helped him fine-tune his action.

Daryl Foster, former coach of Western Australia and English county Kent, said on Monday the extra flexibility of the 24-year-old’s wrist and arm could create the appearance that his bowling action was illegal.

Foster, who now works for the University of Western Australia and has helped several bowlers refine their techniques, said there were very few technical problems with Akhtar’s basic action.

“This guy (Akhtar) is hyper-mobile in all his joints. He can do things like sit with his legs flat on the ground when he does the splits and where most of us can rotate joints 180 degrees he can go way beyond that.

Vasco, Corinthians in title clash

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 12 (DPA) — Veteran striker Romario scored his third goal of the tournament on Tuesday night as local club Vasco Da Gama claimed a 2-1 comeback victory over Mexico’s Necaxa to set up an all-Brazilian final at the inaugural World Club Championships.

Romario netted the winner in the 68th minute after substitute Odvan Silva had cancelled out Necaxa’s surprise fourth-minute lead from Alex Aguinaga in front of a 65,000 crowd.

Vasco will meet Sao Paulo club Corinthians in Rio’s Maracana Stadium for the decider tomorrow night. The winning team will receive $ 6 million.

Vasco finished on top of group B with a maximum nine points from three games.

Necaxa and Manchester United had four apiece, but the Mexicans will meet Real Madrid in the match for third place on Friday because of a goal difference edge of one. United’s 2-0 over winless South Melbourne on Tuesday proved not good enough to avoid elimination.

Corinthians had won group A on goal difference ahead of Madrid the previous day.

With Madrid striker Nicolas Anelka out injured for Friday’s match, the 1994 World Cup top scorer Romario now has the chance to add the same crown at the club championships. Anelka and Romario have three goals apiece, but the 33-year-old Romario has another match.

However, at first it seemed as if Necaxa could spring a surprise and qualify for the final with a victory.

Aguinaga silenced the crowd just four minutes into the game when he beat Vasco’s offside trap and goalkeeper Helton Da Silva with a low drive from eight metres.

Punjab, Delhi in soccer final

MANDI, (HP), Jan 12 (UNI) — Delhi meet Punjab tomorrow in the final of the 9th Zonal (under-21) National Football Championship for the M. Dutta Ray Trophy.

Delhi prevailed over Uttar Pradesh by 4-3 via tie-breaker in the first semifinal held yesterday, after the 90-minute regular session and an extra time of 30 minutes ended in a goal-less draw.

The highlight of this match was fine goalkeeping by Delhi’s custodian Biswajit Haldar who effected two fine saves during the tie-breaker. The other scorers for Delhi were Osman John Ekka, Asim Ekka, Pardeep Kumar and Ashish Kumar while Rajat missed the target.

Earlier in group ‘A’ qualifing league matches, Delhi topped the group while playing goalless against Haryana and held mighty Punjab to a 1-1 draw. Punjab too, being runners up, qualified for the semifinal.

From group ‘B’ Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh qualified for the semi-finals. Punjab got the better of Chandigarh in the second semifinal.

Doctors warn Maradona on cocaine

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 12 (Reuters) — Argentine doctors helping Diego Maradona recover from chronic heart problems apparently brought on by cocaine use said the overweight soccer star must clean up his act if he wants to live.

The 39-year-old fallen soccer idol, who has long admitted he has a cocaine habit, was flown home to Buenos Aires on Sunday from a Uruguayan beach resort where he became ill last Tuesday. The Uruguayan police said he tested positive for cocaine in urine and blood tests.

The Argentine public has been avidly watching every detail of his medical progress on television and in the papers.

They have long been braced for disaster, having seen the soccer prodigy from the slums of Buenos Aires soar to the peak of sporting success, leading Argentina to a World Cup victory against Germany in Mexico in 1986, then decline and fall.

The doctors attending Maradona, one of the world’s best-known sports stars,on Monday avoided any direct references to drugs or an overdose but spoke of his “addictions” and the need for a long recovery at a clinic abroad, possibly in Canada.

They said he was still on sedatives to calm unspecified “withdrawal symptoms” but was no longer in immediate danger, after suffering hypertension and an irregular heartbeat last week-symptoms, frequently linked to drug abuse.

His cardiologist, Dr Carlos Alvarez, said Maradona had suffered heart problems from an unspecified “intoxication” and said” “We all know what addictive habits we have. In Maradona’s case, it has harmed his health. We’ll have to see if his heart muscles can recover, or not.”

“The real worry is long term,” Maradona’s personal doctor, Alfredo Cahe, told reporters outside the private Buenos Aires clinic besieged by reporters and cameramen. “The main thing is to get Diego’s total, complete consent and commitment.”

He portrayed Maradona as a broken man, who when visited by his mother in intensive care in the jet-set beach resort of Punta del Este last week, “collapsed into tears, embraced her and begged her forgiveness.”

For television producers planning a soap opera based on Maradona’s life, the latest episode nearly provided a tragic ending. The doctors said he had been “on the brink of death.”

The stockily built, curly haired football idol says he first started using drugs at the height of his career, at the age of 22 when he was playing for Barcelona.

He first got in trouble when he tested positive for coaine in 1991 while playing for Napoli. After that it was scandal after scandal, with a suspended jail term for shooting at reporters with an air gun and seeing his manager and friend Guillermo Coppola on trial for drug dealing.

Many people see Coppola as the “Rasputin” behind Maradona. The permanently bronzed, silver-haired manager is never far from Maradona’s side, especially since Diego separated from his wife Claudia, mother of his two daughters, last year.

Punjab, Kerala qualify

SALEM, Jan 12 (PTI) — Former champions Kerala rallied from a set down to score a 3-1 victory over Services in a crucial group B league match for their third win while holders Punjab struggled a bit before prevailing over Andhra Pradesh 3-0 to top group A in the 48th Senior National Volleyball Championship here today.

Both Kerala and Services, who went into today’s match with two wins and a loss, needed a win for a smooth outright entry into the knock-out phase, but the former came out on top with a 25-27, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 victory.

With a match to go against lowly Uttar Pradesh, Kerala are likely to finish second in the 6-team group behind Tamil Nadu, who have three wins and two more easy matches against UP and Himachal Pradesh.

Punjab, who were stretched by Railways last night, yet again played in patches against Andhra Pradesh but raised their game at crucial stages to win 25-16, 25-21, 25-23.

Bindra for Asian shooting meet
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Jan 12 — National champion Abhinav Bindra from Chandigarh is representing India in the ninth Asian Shooting Championship being held at Langkawi in Malaysia from January 20 to 31, 2000. He is currently attending a national camp at Bangalore prior to the team’s departure for Malaysia.

Abhinav had shattered the Asian record of 591/600 when he was just short of the world junior mark of 593/600 at the recently concluded National Shooting Championship where he won both junior and senior men titles with consummate ease.

Abhinav is a hot aspirant for the Sydney Olympic Games for India as if he wins the title in Malaysia he is then sure to achieve the quota position available to two shooters for India.

He has successfully attained MQS (minimum qualifying scores) in four World Cups and two major shooting championships in Barcelona and Auckland.

One month ago standing 10 metres away, he hit the bulls eye so often that he scored 594/600 a world junior record (but was not recognised as it was not an international event). He repeated the feat at the nationals.

Abhinav Bindra had earned the honour of representing the country in the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia, 1998, when he was just 16 years old and thus became the youngest participating athlete in the games and the youngest sports person in the history of free India to have represented the country in the Commonwealth Games.

Coming under heavy stress with his final board examination ahead he is clogging five hours of practice and six hours of study preparation to enable him achieve a sound position in his studies as well.
