Akhtar powers Pak to thrilling win BRISBANE, Jan 9 (PTI) Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar made a sensational return to grab three crucial wickets as Pakistan inflicted a stunning 45-run defeat on World Cup champions Australia in a thrilling, low-scoring opening match of the one-day triangular cricket Series here tonight. Akhtar, whose ban for chucking was partially lifted only yesterday by the world body, ICC, airdashed from Perth and managed to reach the Gabba only after play began, but lifted his teams morale with a fine effort as Pakistan bounced back from recent reverses to overwhelm the hosts. Akhtar bowled his heart out to capture three for 31 and with man of the match Abdur Razzaq, who snapped up 4 for 23, led a superb showing by the pacemen as Pakistan avenged their loss in the World Cup final by bowling out the hosts for a paltry 139 with 11 overs to spare after being restricted to 184 for nine in 50 overs on choosing to bat first. Opener Adam Gilchrist (27) and Ricky Ponting (32) came up with a rollicking 53-run second-wicket stand as Australia looked poised to complete an easy victory, but Akhtar sent back Ponting and rival skipper Steve Waugh for a duck off successive balls to trigger a major collapse. Six wickets tumbled for just 16 runs and left-hander Michael Bevans unbeaten 31 only delayed the inevitable as he ran out of partners. Pakistan completed the splendid win when last man Glenn McGrath was run out to a superb piece of work by stumper Moin Khan after Bevan called for a single in a desperate bid to retain strike. The Pakistan skipper included Akhtar to bolster the pace attack after the bowler was cleared by the ICC to play in the triseries and chose to bat first, but Akrams side were in dire straits as they were reduced to 60 for 6. But Akram himself led a defiant lower order fightback by compiling 35 with wicketkeeper Moin Khan (33) producing one of his typically gutsy efforts before Saqlain Mushtaq (37 not out) and Waqar Younis (23 not out) produced a vital, 57-run stand for the unbroken ninth wicket to lift the score. Australia, who had won all but one of the last 15 matches they had played coming into the tournament, looked all set to wrap up their first clash against Pakistan since the World Cup final as Gilchrist and Ponting got going. The two smashed Younis, who finished with 2 for 25, and Akram for boundaries, but Gilchrist was caught behind by Moin Khan off Razzaq and Akhtar forced Ponting to edge to Mohammed Wasim in the slips. The Rawalpindi Express arrived to a standing ovation from the sellout crowd, bowled fast and maintained good line and length showing little effects of being sidelined since the ICC throwing panel slapped a one-month ban on him for suspect bowling action. Razzaq cut through the middle order by snapping up three wickets in the space of five balls as Australia slumped to 79 for seven, losing five wickets for just seven runs, as Pakistan took a vice-like grip ahead of their clash against India at the same venue tomorrow. Sachin to bat at number 4 BRISBANE, Jan 9 (PTI) Demoralised after a 0-3 Test series defeat against Australia, India will aim to regain their poise when they gear up against arch-rivals Pakistan bolstered by the return of express paceman Shoaib Akhtar in their opening day-night tie of the triangular one-day cricket series here tomorrow. Skipper Sachin Tendulkar has decided to drop to number four in the batting order to shore up the batting which proved brittle in the Test series and V V S Laxman, whose majestic 167 in the final Test at Sydney helped him come into the limited overs squad, is likely to open. Laxman is most likely to pair with left-hander Saurav Ganguly with 30-year-old Samir Dighe, who will make his India debut tomorrow, kept as a stand-bye for the taxing role. India, who beat Pakistan by 47 runs in a World Cup super league tie in England last June when the two teams last met, will have to face the fury of tearaway Shoaib Akhtar whose ban for suspect bowling action has been lifted for this tournament by the games world governing body, ICC. We have faced him before, its nothing new, Tendulkar said as the Indian team held nets at the Gabba a couple of hours prior to the start of the opening tie in the tournament between Australia and Pakistan. Both Tendulkar and coach Kapil Dev admitted the players were a bit low after the reverses against the Aussies, but the skipper said his side was talented enough to get over the disappointment. I dont doubt the ability of my players, said Tendulkar, but the Indians will have to put up a vastly improved show if they are to compete well against their two opponents to make up for the disastrous tour Down Under so far. Playing their first one day tie of the year, India will have to face a Pakistani side buoyed by the return of Akhtar, whose one-month ban for chucking was partially lifted by ICC, which allowed him to play here. Indian batsmen have not played the Rawalpindi Express very convincingly since he made an impressive entry into international cricket early last year and will have their task cut out against speedsters in rival captain Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, besides all-rounder Abdur Razzaq and Azhar Mehmood. Both Ganguly and Dravid, who failed miserably in the Test series, will have to come good if India are to do well in the triseries and offset problems, including controversies over decisions by Australian umpires, Darrell Hair in particular. The Indian bowlers who failed to make an impression on the Australian batsmen also have their task cut out. Pacemen Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad and leg spinner Anil Kumble look certain while Debashish Mohanty and Ajit Agarkar will be in the race for the third seamers spot. The batting should be bolstered by the arrival of veteran all-rounder Robin Singh and off-spinner Nikhil Chopra as India strive to reclaim the confidence of their fans back home. Wasim Akrams team is also smarting from a 0-3 whitewash by Australia and have entered the tournament having lost all three of their build up games. Pakistan hold an impressive 47-27 record from 78 matches against India, but Akram said: I would say both teams give their 100 per cent on a cricket field and it is always exciting to play against India. Kiwis cruise to 8-wkt victory WELLINGTON, Jan 9 (Reuters) New Zealand cruised to victory by eight wickets to take a 4-0 lead in the five match one-day series against the West Indies here today. Nathan Astle, a constant thorn in the West Indies side in this series, and Roger Twose lead New Zealand home with a third wicket partnership of 149 as the demoralised tourists put in their worst fielding display. The West Indies had scored 171 for nine. Three crucial catches were dropped. Astle was missed by Wavell Hinds at long-leg at 26, Twose by Reon King at mid-off at 18 and Astle again gave long-leg a chance, this time Jimmy Adams, when it was almost all over and he was on 63. Adams had earlier pulled off a stunning catch, leaping high at square leg to dismiss New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming for 10. India go down to Spain, finish 3rd BARCELONA, Jan 9 (AP) Spain defeated India 5-3 yesterday to win the Four-Nation Mens Hockey Tournament here. Spain, who won all three of their games, ran up an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Victor Pujol in the fifth minute and Josep Sanchez in the eighth. India fought back to equal scores as they reduced the margin in the 27th minute through forward Sameer Dad and a 35th minute goal from winger Mukesh Kumar. But Spain came back strongly in the second half with Sanchez scoring in the 37th and 42nd minutes and Pujol adding a second in the 49th. Indias third goal came in the 61st minute off the stick of Dilip Tirkey. India, who beat Canada 1-0 on Thursday and lost to Germany 1-2, finished third while Germany ended the tournament with two wins and a 1-3 loss to the hosts to come second. Yesterday, Germany beat Canada 5-2 after jumping to a 4-0 halftime lead thanks to goals by Christoph Bechmann in the 15th and 27th minutes and by Bjorn Michel in the 21st and Sascha Reinelt in the 35th. The Germans enhanced the leeway in the 52nd minute with a goal from Bjorn Emerling. Canada got consolation goals from Robin DAbreo and Wayne Fernandes in the 55th and 67th minutes. Canada lost all three of their games. PTI adds: India stay
back to play four Test matches against Canada (January
11) and Belgium (Jan 12, 14, 15). |
Hewitt outlasts Enqvist for title ADELAIDE, Jan 9 (Reuters) Australian teenager Lleyton Hewitt came back strongly today to beat top seed Thomas Enqvist of Sweden and win the Australian Mens Hardcourt Championship for the second time in three years. A hometown crowd cheered on Hewitt in sweltering conditions despite the teenagers controversial jibe earlier in the week about the stupidity of Australian sports fans. To beat the number four player in the world when hes obviously hitting the ball well all week he hasnt really struggled it gives me a lot of confidence going into this months Australian Open, the sixth-seeded Hewitt said after his 3-6 6-3 6-2 victory over Enqvist. The win avenged Hewitts loss to the Swede in last years final in adelaide and makes the feisty Australian only the fifth player to have won the tournament twice. The 18-year-old Hewitt, playing in his third straight Adelaide final, struggled in the first set. He was blitzed by the Swedes big serve and found his own service off target. But he steadied as the defending champions serve and groundstrokes dropped away, took a crucial break midway through the second set and outpaced the Swede in the third. I think the first set today was probably my best set through the week, Enqvist said later. After that I lost my rhythm totally and I was making mistakes. Hewitt came out of nowhere to win in Adelaide in 1998, beating current world number one Andre Agassi and becoming, at a world ranking of 550, the lowest-ranked player to win an ATP title. Enqvist had dropped only one set in four matches leading to the final but knew he would have to play well against Hewitt who had helped Australia to Davis Cup victory last month. Hes a tough player, especially on this court out there, but I didnt (play well) today, he was the better player, said Enqvist. Hewitt is hoping this year to break into the world top 10 and to do well at the Australian Open which begins in Melbourne on January 17. Its a
fantastic start to the year, he said. I feel
like Im hitting the ball well enough to do a bit of
damage over the next two weeks as well. |
JCT clash with FC Kochin today KOCHI, Jan 9 (PTI) Local favourites FC Kochin will be seeking a win to put behind them a lacklustre performance in the National Football League so far when they meet former champions JCT at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here tomorrow. FC Kochin have seven points from six encounters with a lone win over State Bank of Travancore, four draws and a loss in the league, while the Phagwara side, coached by India mentor Sukhvinder Singh, have eight points from two wins, two draws and two losses. Much was expected of FC Kochin, the first professional club of the country, boasting several internationals in their ranks, but they have struggled with luck, too, not favouring them. The team put up decent performances against Border Security Force, Jalandhar (0-0) and dominated against Mohun Bagan but had to be content with a 1-1 draw. The return to form of mercurial striker I.M. Vijayan, however, is one cause for cheer for the team. If Vijayan gets going, JCTs sturdy defence, their most impressive department, will have a tough time. The local team will have to tighten their defence, which has shown a tendency to wilt under pressure, if they want to make further progress in the NFL. The injury to international defender K.V. Dhanesh would put added pressure on Firoz and Mahesh Gawli, who will have to go all out to contain the dangerous JCT strikers Ram Pal, Hardeep Gill and Kuljeet Singh. Sukhwinder Singh said: All my boys are fit and are raring to go. FC Kochin is a good side and has the home advantage but we will go all out. The Punjab outfit, would be relying on Deepak Mandal, Daljit Singh and Prabjot Singh, who was in FC Kochin last year. On the other hand, FC Kochin would heavily lean on Vijayan and captain Jo Paul Ancheri to fetch them the goals. Their midfield would be in the hands of Tejinder Kumar, Mohammed Shafeeq and Gunabir Singh. E. Bengal meet Dempo CALCUTTA (UNI): After 0-1 defeat on Monday against traditional rivals Mohun Bagan, East Bengal are likely to have an easy go against Goas Dempo Sports Club in the National Football League at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium here tomorrow. The IFA has changed the venue from Salt Lake Stadium on the eastern fringe to Rabindra Sarobar Stadium in south Calcutta as the original venue is hosting the Biswa Banga Sammelan. East Bengal so far earned seven points from five matches-two wins two defeats and a draw while the visitors secured two points from five outings. Local team coach Subash Bhowmick is yet to name the first eleven as many players in his camp are nursing injuries. The teams star players Bijen Singh, Raman Vijayan, Falguni Dutta and Tushar Rakshit are on the injury list. But the coach was hoping a return of Ghanian recruit Suley Musha tomorrow. MUMBAI: Local team Mahindras should be starting their National Football League tie against State Bank of Travancore tomorrow with a lot of confidence. They have won the last two games and have beaten SBT four times. Mahindras victory against the rivals from the south, include the final match in the Mammen Mappli Trophy last May at Kottayam. However, Mahindras have a minor problem to give a back-up partner for their Jordanian player Khatip Khalim. In the last match against JCT Mohamadd Najaab could not fit into the role and was benched after half time. Now they have to pick from Nitin Pathan and Abbas Ali. Another positional change will be for another Jordanian Jamail who used to come after half time as a sweeper back. Now he will be required in the defensive half. SBT will be without
their right wing back Shiva Kumar who has drawn two
yellow cards which will bring more pressure on their ace
forward Jiju Jacob. Mahindras have nine points from six
matches while SBT has six from six. |
Dingko, Jitender top aspirants NEW DELHI, Jan 9 (PTI) After drawing a blank in the first edition, India will hope to clinch a berth for the Sydney 2000 Olympics with an eight-member squad selected to take part in the second Olympic qualifying boxing tournament to be held at Taejeon, near Seoul, in South Korea from January 17 to 25. Asian Games bantamweight champion Mg Dingko Singh leads the list of aspirants with Commonwealth Games middleweight silver medallist Jitender Kumar and Narendra Rana (lightweight) among the top aspirants. S. Suresh Singh (lightfly), H. Srinivasa Rao (fly), Ramanand (feather), K. Sanjit Singh (lightwelter) and Gurcharan Singh (lightheavy) are the others who will make the trip. The Seoul tournament will provide the Indians a fine qualifying opportunity. Asia have been allotted 68 berths out of a total of 312 that will make the field in Sydney. Barring Suresh Singh, the diminutive Manipur-born CISF pugilist and K. Sanjit Singh, the Assam rifles boxer, the rest had all taken part in the Asian Championship held in Tashkent in October last year and failed to make the grade. Sanjit Singh, who
finished runner-up to Bhushan Saini in the last nationals
held in Shimla, has been drafted in after the
latters failure in Tashkent. |
Steady progress by Punjab PATIALA, Jan 9 Punjab prospered to a position of strength as they piled up 161 for 4 in their first essay, against Rest of Indias first innings total of 237 all out on the penultimate day of the M.A. Chidambaram Trophy match here today. The hosts suffered an early setback when Gaganinder Garry played across the line of a full length Vipul Patel delivery to be caught in front of the wicket. The fall of Garry brought in Vivek Mahajan who not only played a stellar knock but also put on 104 crucial runs for the second wicket with Binwant Singh and it was this partnership which slowly turned the match the hosts way. While Vivek Mahajan stood tall at one end, the other wickets to fall were those of Manav Dupper, who pulled a long-hop straight into mid-wickets hands, while Gagandeep Singh perished trying to fend off fast bowlers Ashok Sharmas rising delivery and lobbed the ball to short leg. Earlier, resuming from their overnight 221 for 7, the visitors tail failed to wag as Amit Uniyal scalped two victims today while the other medium pacer Gagandeep Singh took another wicket to finish off the visitors innings with a rich haul of 6 for 58. Brief scores: Rest of India (first innings): 237 all out (Dhruv Mohan 95, Chetan Sharma 64, Udya Karvakar 16 n.o., Rattan Kumar 17, Gagandeep Singh 6 for 58, Amit Uniyal 4 for 37). Punjab (First innings): 161 for 4 (Vivek Mahajan 70 n.o., Binwant Singh 43, Manav Dupper 16, G. Garry 12, S.P. Singh 4 n.o., Ashok Sharma 2 for 51, Vipul Patel 1 for 20, Ashu Sharma 1 for 15). |

In the first super league encounter, last years runners-up Punjab scored an easy 45-23 victory over Kerala after leading 18-13 at the breather. Punjabs playmaker Rajesh Thakur put his team ahead in the very first minute of the game. Punjab added three more goals in the next two minutes to lead by 4-0. In the sixth minute, Lijumonjoy of Kerala opened the account for his side. Punjabs pivot Baljit Singh played a stellar role scoring two goals in quick succession to enhance the lead at 7-1. Lijumonjoy spearheaded Keralas counter-attack to make it 18-13 at half time. After resumption Punjab players displayed fine co-ordination and scored 27 goals while Kerala added 10 more thus losing the game at 23-45. For Punjab, Baljit Singh netted 8 goals while Rajesh Thakur and Mukhtiar Singh chipped in with seven goals each. Lijumonjoy with nine and Malbimathau with four fought the losing battle for Kerala. For the losers, Ashok and Sanjeev shone in patches scoring four goals each. Holders Madhya Pradesh began their title hunt by shrugging off strong resistance to scrape past Himachal Pradesh 34-32 after trailing 18-20 at the lemon break. Romario destroys Manchester United RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 9 (Reuters) Romario and Edmundo buried personal differences to destroy Manchester Uniteds World Club Championship hopes on a nightmare evening for Gary Neville as Vasco Da Gama beat the European champions 3-1. Neville gifted the South American representatives their first two goals, both converted by Romario, as United wilted on a stifling night yesterday. Edmundo added a third, silencing doubters who believed differences between the two, barely on speaking terms, and renowned tendencies for tantrums would prevent them from forming a world-beating partnership despite their talents. Nicky Butt scored Uniteds late consolation. The result left Vasco with a maximum six points from their two games and United out of the group B running with just one. United, without suspended David Beckham and coach Alex Ferguson after their sendings-off against Necaxa, tried to slow the pace at first, playing an offside trap that placed a large responsibility on the flag of the referees assistant. The plan worked until the first of a pair of blunders by Neville in the 23rd minute. Attempting a pass back to goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, Neville played the ball into the path of Edmundo. The animal slipped the ball to Romario on his right and the former World Cup hero tapped the ball into the net. Three minutes later,
Neville and Romario produced a near replay. Neville
attempted a chest back to Bosnich only to see Romario
dart in, round the goalkeeper and score again. |
