AMBALA, Sept 27 — Director, Higher Education, Haryana Mrs Shakuntla Jakhu has assured a deputation of Principals of affiliated colleges of the state that she will make all efforts to get the salaries of teaching and non-teaching staff of colleges released regularly and in time. This was revealed here today by Dr D. P. Asija, president of the Haryana Principals Association. In most of the colleges the salaries for the past four months have not been paid.

According to Mr Asija, arrears of the salaries in the revised grade which runs into a sizeable amount have also not been paid though the state government has received this amount from the Centre. He said that the association also took up the case of diminishing cadre posts of demonstrators with director. It was also pointed out that these posts should not be allowed to lapse. He said that government should revive these posts because the work-load being shared by the teachers could not be ignored and it was difficult to run the colleges without them.

Dr Ramesh Kumar, General Secretary of the association said that there was a serious anomaly in the grant of pay scales of the Principals in the non-Government affiliated colleges. According to him in the new grades the Principals were drawing lower salary than that the lecturers working in the same institute. He urged the government to lift the ban on the regular appointment against vacant posts which might hit the studies of the students and likely to lower the academic standard of the state.

Compensation sought for farmers
From Our Correspondent

ROHTAK, Sept 27 — The President of the Haryana Krishak Samaj and Congress leader, Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewala, has demanded a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre for farmers in the state as they had suffered losses due to scanty rain fall this year. He also urged the Centre and the state government to speed up the procurement of paddy on government rates to avoid distress sale.

Talking to reporters here today, Mr Surjewala, a former M.P. claimed that due to less procurement by various government agencies like the FCI and the HAFED the paddy growers were finding it difficult to get adequate rates for their crop and as a result several farmers had been forced to sell their crop at throwaway prices.

Mr Surjewala said the government had been ignoring the procurement of crop and farmers had to resort to distress sale whenever there was bumper crop.

He said the Krishak Samaj may launch an agitation if its demands were not fulfilled.

The Congress leader also sought suspension of the recovery of agriculture loans and waiving of interest on loans for a period of two years to provide immediate relief to farmers.
