Mubarak wins referendum
CAIRO, Sept 27 (PTI) — Egypt's Hosni Mubarak has been elected for a fourth term as President after he won a referendum with 93.79 per cent of votes. The presidential referendum was held yesterday and the result was announced by Interior Minister Habib Al-Adli today. Mr Mubarak took over as President of Egypt in 1981 after his predecessor Anwar Sadat was assassinated by Islamic radicals. He was then Sadat's Vice-President. The yes votes totalled 17,554, 856.

Turkey quake toll
ANKARA, Sept 27 (DPA) — The official death toll from last month's earthquake in northwest Turkey has reached 15,795, according to figures released today by the Prime Minister's crisis desk. The number of people injured in the quake is now being put at 43,873. According to a crisis desk report, 121 tent cities housing 120,726 people in 28,286 tents have been established. A further 112,445 tents have been distributed to those not staying in tent cities.

5 hurt in lathi charge
KHANDWA (MP), Sept 27 (PTI) — Five persons, including BJP MLA Vijay Shah, were injured today when the police lathi charged BJP workers who had taken out a rally in defiance of prohibitory orders in force in the city. The lathi charge following orders from the City Magistrate following failed attempts to disperse BJP workers agitating against the suspicious death of person in police custody on Saturday.

Nobel Prize nominee
JERUSALEM, Sept 27 (DPA) — Israeli President Ezer Weizman, a long-time advocate of Arab-Israeli peace, is one of the nominees for the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, the Jerusalem Post newspaper reported today. The newspaper said Mr Weizman had been recommended for the prize by former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

Assault alleged
CALCUTTA, Sept 27 (PTI) — BJP's West Bengal unit chief and Party's candidate for the Dum Dum Lok Sabha seat Tapan Sikdar today alleged that "armed" CPM men assaulted him, injured three BJP activists and damaged his car while he was on campaign tour of the constituency during the day. However the police was yet to confirm the attack.

Murder accused held
DHAKA, Sept 27 (PTI) — The prime accused in the murder of an Indian national Gibran Tayebi, in the port city of Chittagong, was arrested from his hide-out and has been taken into five days' police remand for interrogation. On a tip-off the Chittagong Metropolitan Police arrested Mohammed Osman, the main accused in the murder of Tayebi, a shipping firm executive, on Saturday night.

JD (U) leader shot
HAJIPUR, Sept 27 (UNI) — Janata Dal (United) leader Vasudev Sahni was shot dead by some unidentified people at Bhagwanpur village under Lalganj police station area in Vaishali district yesterday. The motive for the murder was not known and no arrest has so far been made, the police said.

ASP injured
KANNUR, Sept 27 (UNI) — An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and another policeman were injured when a country-made bomb was thrown at them during a clash between CPM and BJP activists at Panur in Kannur district of Kerala today. The ASP, Sreejit, opened fire in the air to disperse the crowd, but no one was injured, the police said.
