Eye camp:
As many as 254 patients were treated and cataract operations on 21 patients were performed at a free eye camp organised at the local Hindu Charitable Hospital with the assistance of State Bank of Patiala between September 23 and 26. This was stated here on Monday by the bank's Branch Manager, Mr S.S Gupta.

JALANDHAR
Kargil fund:
The Northern India Homoeopathic Chemists Association has given Rs 50,000 towards the Army Welfare Fund for the benefit of families of Kargil martyrs, according to Dr Kanwaljit Singh, General Secretary of the Association.

PATIALA
Medical camp:
Dedicated Brothers Group organised its 130th free special health check-up and medicine distribution camp on Sunday in collaboration with the Bhupindra Nagar branch of the State Bank of Patiala, at Rauni village under the chairmanship of Dr Rakesh Vermi. Senior specialist doctors examined 173 patients and provided them medicines free of costs

Demonstration deferred:
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and other third front allies here have suspended their ongoing struggle against the registration of false cases against nine BSP activists, including Mr Ashok Sandhu, district BSP President. Consequently, their plan for a demonstration on Tuesdays stands deferred.

Fair concludes:
More than one lakh devotees paid obeisance at the two-day ‘mela Jag' organised at Goindwal Sahib. The fair concluded on Saturday. Elaborate security arrangements had been made by setting up police assistance booths at all entry points of Goindwal Sahib.

Competition: A two-day state-level exhibition and a national debate competition on population education of the Punjab cluster of Jawahar Navodaya Vidayalas (JNVs), concluded at JNV, Goindwal Sahib, on Saturday. More than 200 students of 11 JNVs' of Punjab and one student from Chandigarh took part in the competition. Ms Surinder Pal Kaur, Principal of JNV, Goindwal Sahib, presided. Mr Gursewak Singh, Principal of JNV, Kapurthala, was the chief guest.

Medical camp: As many as 200 patients were examined at a free medical camp organised on Saturday by the local St Mary's Hospital at Chohla Sahib, near here. A team of doctors led by Dr M.S. Das examined the patients. Medicines were distributed free of cost. top

Blood grouping: The Lions Club Chandigarh Nightingale organised a free blood grouping check-up camp at Senior Secondary School, Karsan Colony, Phase II, Ram Darbar, on Monday.

Play: Zulfiqar staged a Hindi play 'Shauq Se Aadat Bani' — on the issue of drugs and its addiction among the youth — at Raipur Kalan on Monday.

Blood donation: The Panchkula branch of the Red Cross and DAV Senior Secondary School, Surajpur, held a blood donation camp on the premises of the school on Monday. The camp was organised in collaboration with the General Hospital in Panchkula and Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh.

ZIRAKPUR
Test: St Soldier Paradise Public School, Dhakoli, will hold a test for St Soldier scholarship on Thursday for students of classes V, VIII and IX. A one-day workshop for teachers will also be organised the same day.

JIND
Shot dead:
Three unidentified armed youths shot Dr Ramesh Arya, a dentist, in broad daylight in his clinic at Uchana town in the district on Sunday. Dr Arya died on the spot. The youths escaped on a motorcycle after committing the crime. According to a report, when an assistant of Dr Arya resisted the assailants, they attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon, but he escaped unhurt. Medical practitioners of the town closed their clinics on Sunday in protest against the murder. The police has registered a case under Sections 302 and 120 B of the IPC.

Suicide: A youth reportedly consumed a poisonous substance and was admitted to a local hospital where he died on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Dinesh. He had allegedly committed suicide.

PANIPAT
Students’ demand:
Students of the local Nem Chand College of Engineering have asked Haryana Roadways authorities to issue instructions to drivers of buses passing on the college route to halt at the college bus stop so that students who have to go towards Gohana or Israna may not have to wait for long .

REWARI
Engineering college:
The R.D. Somani Memorial Trust has decided to open an engineering college in the district. An announcement to this effect was made on Sunday by Mr Vijay Somani, convener of Rashtriya Navchana, a voluntary organisation of south Haryana, at its monthly meeting at Lakhnor Budhpur village, near here.

ROHTAK
Bail granted:
Subhash Anand and Bhushan Wadhwa were produced in the court of the Duty Magistrate, Mr Bhupender Nath, on Sunday on the charge of abducting a girl of Shakti Nagar locality here. They were granted bail till the next hearing which has been fixed for November 18. Mr Atam Prakash Wadhwa had alleged that his daughter was abducted by the accused on September 23. Tarsem Lal, the third accused, is still at large.

Suicide: A woman allegedly set herself afire along with her 18-month-old daughter at Meham, near here, on Sunday. Mr Chhaju Ram of Badai in Mahendragarh alleged in the FIR that his sister Sushila and her daughter Jyoti, were beaten up by her in-laws which led to the grave incident. The police has registered a case under Sections 304-B, 201 and 34 of the IPC.

Robbery: Two youths allegedly looted Rs 5,000 at gun-point from Amar Nath, a resident of the local vegetable market, on Sunday. A case has been registered under Sections 392 and 397 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act. Subhash, son of Mr Diwan Singh of Barsi village in Narwana, has been arrested by the police in this connection while the other accused, Surender, son of Mr Hawa Singh of Kharkara village is absconding.

Sodomised: A 12-year-old boy was allegedly sodomised by a youth at Kheri village, near here, on Sunday. According to a complaint lodged by Suraj Bhan, his son was sodomised by Dharmender, son of Satbir. A case has been registered under Section 377 of the IPC.

SONEPAT
Missing:
Mystery shrouds the disappearance of Narender Kumar, son of a kiryana merchant, Mr Nanak Chand. Narender Kumar, it is learnt, had left his house on the evening of September 21 for his shop in the Model Town area here. His father has lodged a report with the police.

Theft: Three unidentified youths are reported to have stolen Rs 30,000 on Sunday from the suitcase of a co-passenger, Mr Aman Waldia, travelling in a bus plying between Murthal and Sonepat. According to a report lodged with the police, Mr Waldia boarded the bus, along with his mother, from Murthal. A case has been registered.

Dowry death: Seema Devi, a young woman, and her 10-month-old child died of poisoning here on Sunday. According to the police, the woman had swallowed poison and had also administered it to the child after being allegedly harassed for dowry by her husband and in-laws. Mr Rajesh Kataria, brother of the victim, lodged an FIR with the police. The police has booked a case against the husband and two other members of his family.

Suicide: Nirmala Devi (35) was reported to have committed suicide on Sunday by consuming insecticide tablets in her house at Liwaspur village, about 8 km from here. It is learnt that she took the step after a family quarrel.

Hailed: Representatives of various political, social and voluntary organisations and trade unions on Monday hailed the decision of the state government in ordering the transfer of Mr S.S Rana, District Food and Supplies Controller, and urged the government to order a high-level probe into the public complaints about the diverting of rationed sugar and kerosene oil into the black market every month by certain unscrupulous depot holders in connivance with the officials concerned.

YAMUNANAGAR
Science Day:
A National Science Day, sponsored by the Haryana Vigyan Manch, was organised at Government High School, Sabapur, on Sunday. As many as 100 students from Class VI to X exhibited the progress of science through live demonstrations, models and charts. Mr J.P Singh, District Public Relations Officer, distributed prizes to the students who participated in the exhibition and achieved excellence in academics during 1998-99.

JEs’ association:
The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Junior Engineers Association has expressed its gratitude to the Chief Minister and the management of the board for providing helicopter services to recover the body of Hem Singh, a Junior Engineer who died near Mantalai Lake in the Parbati valley, while on an official tour. The association expressed its resentment over the indifferent attitude of the local authorities of the board in retrieving the body.
