Case registered against contractor, attendant

Chandigarh, Sept 7 — The police has registered a case against the contractor and an attendant of the parking lot in the Sector 16 General Hospital following the theft of a car from the place.

According to police sources, Mr Leela Dhar of Sector 28 lodged a complaint that he had parked his car (HR-OI-A-1530) in the parking lot and was given a receipt but when he returned after some time, he found that his car had been stolen. The case under Section 406 of the IPC has been registered at the Central police station.

Two nabbed
The police arrested Raju of Gonda district and Som Pal of Solan in a case of theft registered against them at the Central police station. A black and white television set, a sewing machine and other household articles were recovered from them.

Further investigations are on. More recoveries are expected from the duo.

Assaulted
Mr Rajan of Mauli Jagran complex reported to the police that he was assaulted by Ram Lal of the same complex. A case under Section 325 of the IPC has been registered at the Mani Majra police station.

Complaint lodged
Mr Vijay Kumar of Sector 21-A reported to the police that though he had the possession of a portion of a house in Sector 22, the landlord had forcibly thrown out his belongings from the house. A case under Sections 448\454\380 of the IPC has been registered at the Central police station.

One arrested
The police arrested Ramesh Chand of Dadu Majra from Sector 40 for possessing 12 bottles of liquor. A case under Section 61-1-14 of the Excise Act has been registered against him at the Sector 39 police station.

Injured
Mr Joginder Bains of Sector 11 was injured when he was hit by a maruti car (CHQ-3956). He has been admitted to the Sector 16 General Hospital.

The police is on the lookout for the driver of the car, who fled from the scene. A case under Section 279\338 of the IPC has been registered at the police station west.

Purse snatched
Ms Gladys Banerjee of Sector 44 lodged a complaint with the police that her purse, containing Rs 1,100, PAN card, keys of the bank locker and important documents, was snatched by a scooterist from outside her house.

A case has been registered.

Campus beat
DSW plea to Education Secy

CHANDIGARH, Sept 7 — At a meeting held here today, the Dean Students Welfare,Prof V.K.Bansal, urged the UT Home-cum-Education secretary, Mr N.K. Jain , to expedite the matter pertaining to granting permission for holding elections to the students' council in Panjab University and other colleges affiliated to the university.

The DSW had in a letter written to him earlier sought permission for conducting elections in the second or third week of September. Prof Bansal,when contacted,said that though he was keen to have elections this month,the permission may be given next month in view of the counting process for the parliamentary elections on October 6. The permission is essential in view of the police arrangements for the student polls and for having the polls in colleges along with the university.

Later, in another meeting with the representatives of various student organisations, Prof Bansal accepted their demand with regard to registering of student bodies on the campus with the DSW office. A complete list of the names of office-bearers with their addresses will be maintained by the office and they will be invited for all activities conducted by the DSW. This will also facilitate smooth functioning on the campus.

The DSW has also asked students not to deface university walls with posters during the student polls.instead provision for wooden boards will be made outside all buildings for pasting posters. The student bodies have agreed to abide by this direction.

Felicitated:The faculty, research scholars and non-teaching staff of the Department of Geology have felicitated Prof Ashok Sahni on his taking over as Dean University Instruction ( DUI). They have urged him to strive to improve the standard of teaching and research in the university. Back

Fall in vegetable prices

CHANDIGARH, Sept 7 — The prices of almost all vegetables, particularly those of seasonal ones, have decreased in the local market during the past four days.

During a survey of different sector markets, it was found that a kg of cauliflower, priced at Rs 30 for the past three days, could be purchased for between Rs 24 and Rs 25 today. The wholesale price of the vegetable came down from Rs 130 to Rs 100 per 5 kg.

A kg of cabbage, which could be purchased for Rs 15 three days back, could be bought for Rs 12 today. In the wholesale market, the price came down from Rs 60 to Rs 50 per 5 kg. Traders attributed the fall to increased arrivals from parts of Himachal Pradesh.

Similarly, the price of beans came down during this period. A kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 20 two days back, could be purchased for Rs 16 today. The wholesale price of the vegetable came down from Rs 80 to Rs 60 per 5 kg.

A kg of peas, available for Rs 40 three days back, could be purchased for Rs 30 today. The wholesale price of the vegetable came down from Rs 170 to Rs 130 per 5 kg.

Gourd witnessed a steep fall in its price during this period. A kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 10 three days back, could be purchased for Rs 6 today. The wholesale price of the vegetable came down from Rs 40 to Rs 25 per 5 kg. The fall was an outcome of flooding of the market with the vegetable from Punjab and Haryana.

Tomato also became cheaper during this period. A kg of the vegetable, priced at Rs 15 three days back, was available for Rs 10 today. The wholesale price decreased from Rs 50 to Rs 40 per 5 kg.

Cucumber was cheaper than yesterday. A kg of the vegetable, price at Rs 15 a kg, was available for Rs 10 today. In the wholesale market, the price came down from Rs 55 to Rs 40 per 5 kg.

There was also a decline in the price of ginger. A kg of it could be had today for Rs 36 in place of rs 48 two days ago. The wholesale price came down from Rs 200 to Rs 150 per 5 kg.

The price of onion increased from Rs 10 to Rs 12 per kg. The price of potato was stable at Rs 5 per kg.Back

 


Shivalik Trophy for Shivalik boys

Chandigarh, Sept 7 — Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, bagged Shivalik Trophy for boys under the age of 14, in soccer. The final of the tournament was played here at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 23 today. In the final, SPS-41 team defeated St Soldier's School, Sector 28, 4-1, in a tie-breaker. Both teams remained goaless in the stipulated period.

Mr A.S. Bains, PCS and chief guest, gave away the prizes.

The final match was pitched for good quality of football played by young budding players of the city. In the first half, both teams were on a defensive spree. In the second half Navjeet of Shivalik Public School made a move for the goal which was foiled by an attentive goalkeeper of St Soldier's School, Vikram Dev.

Then the tie-breaker was applied by the referees and here, the SPS boys scored four goals, followed by St Soldier's School players who could score one goal. One goal each was scored for the winners by Bhupinder, Gagandeep, Harsimran and Rajinder Pal. The lone scorer for the losers was Surinder.

Organisers have declared the following as the best players: Sahil Mehta (SPS-41); Surinder (St Soldier's School-28), Kuldeep (GHS-37) and Satinder Singh (GMHS- 38).

YPS win

Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, today established itself as the leader in North India when they won the squash title in the under-13 section after beating Mayo College, 2-1, in the North Zone ICSE Schools Squash Championship which concluded at Ajmer today. The All-India ICSE Schools Squash Championship is scheduled to be held from September 13 at Delhi.

As per an information reaching here, in the finals, Harinder Pal Sidhu, a promising ten-year-old prodigy of the YPS, went down fighting to A. Khanduja who won, 10-8, 9-6, 6-9, 5-9, 9-3. In the next match, top seed and India number 2, Manpreet Singh, demolished U. Bagga, 9-4, 9-2, 9-1. In the decider, second seed of the tournament, Jai Singh Sekhon had a cakewalk victory over Srivatsa Kanodia, 9-2, 9-1, 9-0.

In the under-17 section's finals, Mayo College, Ajmer, proved its supremacy over RSM Inter College, Dhampur (UP), 2-1. In the under-15 finals, Mayo College blanked Doon School Dehradun, 3-0.Back
