India cruise to 7-wkt win NEW DELHI, Nov 17 It was too low a total to defend. New Zealand, opting to bat first after skipper Stephan Fleming called correctly, frittered away the advantage and their modest total of 179 for nine in their allotted 50 overs was simply not adequate to pose a challenge to India in the concluding one-day tie of the five-match series at the Ferozeshah Kotla here today.

India, riding on the good start given by debutant Devang Gandhi and Saurav Ganguly, who together put on 117 runs for the first wicket, coasted to victory in 44 overs for the loss of only three wickets. With the first four matches of the series being split 2-2, todays win enabled India to grab the Pepsi Trophy, a good morale booster for the hosts as they are scheduled to embark on a 76-day tour of Australia later this month. In fact, India should be thankful to their openers for scripting the victory. Saurav Ganguly, who has been in brilliant form throughout the series, today hit up 86 (110 balls, 12 fours, one six) while Debang, who scored 30, were initially restricted by the Kiwi bowlers before the two broke the stranglehold to get the scoreboard moving. If the two had not laid an adequate foundation of the innings the later batsmen might have had difficulty in overtaking the modest total put up by the visitors, given the fact that the pitch was becoming slower and slower. For his efforts Saurav Ganguly, who had also taken a wicket in the Kiwi innings, was not only declared Man of the Match but was also declared Man of the Series a proud owner of a spanking new car. The Indian left-hander had scored a total of 301 runs in five matches and had taken two wickets. The Indian players, mobbed by fans and eager policemen, mute spectators as hundreds of fans jumped over the ground fence to enter the playing area once the proceedings were over, took a ride in the Fiat Sienna to the cheers of the 30,000-odd spectators. Besides these two batsmen, skipper Sachin Tendulkar was the only other batsman to be out, caught and bowled by Daniel Vettori before the Indian skipper could get off the mark. Sachin, who was reportedly asked by the selectors to bat down the order after the way he was out in the last match at Guwahati, had just come in and after facing just three deliveries tried to hoist the New Zealand spinner, could not connect properly and gave a simple low catch to Vettori who in the same over had earlier taken the prized wicket of Ganguly, who in an attempt to finish the match early tried to hoist the bowler over the ropes but missed the line completely, giving wicketkeeper Adam Parore a lot of time to break the stumps. Unlucky to miss his 10th one-day hundred, Ganguly reached his 29th half-century in the shorter version of the game in 78 balls. He was particularly harsh on New Zealand medium pacer Chris Drum, picking up 17 runs in the fourth over of the Indian innings. After the early departure of the Indian skipper it was then left to Rahul Dravid and Vijay Bhardwaj to take India to victory with some laborious batting. While Rahul faced 53 deliveries for his 29 (three fours, two six), Bhardwaj faced a total of 35 balls to score 17 (three fours). Indias task might have been rendered difficult if the visitors had posted a total in the vicinity of 220 or so. The relaid Ferozeshah Kotla strip played the spoilsport, with the low bounce making strokeplay difficult. If one-day cricket is supposed to give entertainment to the paying public then Delhi was a really poor show. In spite of the fact that the curator of the pitch had said that it was a 275-plus strip today strokemaking was very difficult with quite a few leg before decisions with the ball keeping really low. The decision of New Zealand to bat first completely backfired as Javagal Srinath, who today came into the playing squad at the expense of the erratic Ajit Agarkar, and T. Kumaran, playing in only second one-day international, bowled well to restrict the freestroking Craig Spearman and Nathan Astle under a tight lease when the visitors opened their innings. share lead CHANDIGARH, Nov 17 -- Vijay Kumar and Sanjay Kumar of Lucknow and Mohammed Islam (Patna) shared the lead on the opening day of the Rs 9 lakh Hero Golf Chandigarh Open returning identical two under par cards of 70 at the Chandigarh Golf Club course here today. The defending champion, Amritinder Singh, Shiv Prakash, Mukesh Kumar, Arjun Atwal and Devendra Patel were tied at the fourth place at one-under 71. Four players, including Order of Merit leader Feroz Ali and local favourite Amandeep Johl, were tied for ninth place at par 72. Vijay, Player of the Year for the last two seasons, had 15 greens in regulation but his putting let him down badly as he required 31 putts to complete the round. He played the first 15 holes to par and then birdied the 16th and 18th for a two-under 70 card. "I finally got some feel of my putting on the 18th hole when I sank a 20-footer for a birdie. Otherwise, I hit the ball well," he said. Mohd Islam, his confidence boosted by a hole-in-one which earned him $-3000 during last month's Hero Honda Masters, needed just 22 putts to finish 18 holes. Even though he found just 12 greens in regulation, but he was immaculate with his chipping for a two-under 70 round which contained seven birdies and five bogies. Sanjay Kumar made just one bogey, a three-putt on the par-5 seventh but three birdies in four holes between the 9th and 12th gave him the co-leader status at the end of the day.Coincidentally, all three birdies were set up with eight-iron followed by putts of 8-12 feet. Mukesh Kumar, winner of last week's Tiger Sports Marketing Open with a record aggregate of 20-under 268, looked good for another low round but was undone by a nine on the par-5 seventh hole. His third shot from the centre of the fairway entered the left hazard and stayed there for the next four shots. Yet, the Mhow golfer hit five birdies and managed to finish a decent one-under 71. The defending champion, Amritinder Singh, had a frustrating day with the putter and despite setting up numerous birdie chances for himself, managed to convert only three. He also made two bogies, both resulting from three-putts from about 20 feet. "I am satisfied that I am hitting the ball well, but my putting was off the mark today. I think the reason why there why there weren't many low scores today is because there are a lot of grains on the green, making putting difficult. You have to get the perfect line for even small putts. Otherwise, I think that the course is in the best condition I have seen it in the last few years," he said. Lehal leads amateurs: Sandy Lehal of Chandigarh led the amateurs with a one-under 71 round. Girish Virk and Harjinder Kang were a distant joint second at five-over 77. Scores (after 18 holes):
70 Vijay Kumar, Sanjay Kumar and Mohd Islam; 71
Shiv Prakash, Mukesh Kumar, Arjun Atwal, Devendra
Patel and Amritinder Singh; 72 Feroz Ali, Amandeep

Hockey team raring to go KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 (UNI) With less than a day left for the Asia Cup, India, runners-up on all four occasions, are raring to go for the kill this time at the Bukit Jalil Stadium here. India play their first match tomorrow against a relatively unknown Japan. Indian hockey hasnt had the best of times in the recent past with disastrous performances on away tours. However, India will have the comfort of knowing that they have beaten every team in the tournament and are the Asian Games champions. Indias path to the semifinals looks relatively easy. They have drawn the easier of the two groups and the only serious opposition in the group should come from hosts Malaysia. The second of the two groups has both Pakistan and Asian Games runners-up South Korea, so India will have to beat either in the round of four to reach the finals. The winners of the tournament qualify for the 2002 World Cup and that should be the added incentive to performing well. This will also be a major tournament before India go to Sydney 2000 and a good performance will do a lot of good to their confidence. On paper the Indians look a well moulded outfit this time, the forward line will be the one to watch out. With the return of the talented but temperamental Dhanraj Pillay the attack has got a shot in the arm. Youngsters Deepak Thakur and Gagan Ajit Singh along with skipper Baljit Singh Dhillon have to combine well with the Mumbai maestro for India to have an edge over teams like South Korea who run hard and are much fitter. At 31 Pillay is not the picture of perfection and is likely to tire easily. Coach Baskaran thus might use him in bursts to allow him to conserve energy. The coach says that all the boys are in good shape and the camp has helped them with their fitness. We will play our best team. Tall and lanky Punjab policeman Baljit Dhillon has the ability to score goals and be at the right place at the right time. Feeding the forwards will be a midfield without Mohammed Riaz. In his absence Baljit Saini will marshal the troops which has Bimal Lakra in its ranks. The genial Oriya has impressed coach Baskran and the seniors and is likely to start the match. In all probability Jude Menezes will keep the goal for India. He is a vastly improved keeper and is faster on his feet than Edward Alosyius. Ahead of the match the Indians looked a confident lot. There were smiles all around as coach Baskaran took his wards through their paces. Pillay and Ramandeep, the two most experienced players in team lead the warm ups, and it was nice to see Dhanraj giving words of wisdom to Ganga and Deepak Thakur. There is a lot of
support here in Malaysia for the Indian team especially
for Pillay from the Tamil population. |
Irina surges ahead of Vandana NEW DELHI, Nov 17 Sixteen-year-old Irina Brar (Chandigarh) played another steady round as she serenely moved to top on the second-day of the four-day 32nd Ladies Northern India Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course here today. Showing no signs of cares of playing among seniors and unbothered about toughness of the course, Irina fired one over 73 to get an aggregate of 146. Irina established a two-stroke lead over yesterdays leader Vandana Agarwal who had left her form and luck at home as she could manage a dismal score of eight over 80. Yesterday she had equalled the course record with four under 68. Lalitha Balasubramaniam stayed third with her tally of seven over 79 (aggregate 156), 10 behind Irina and eight behind Vandana. Two favourites, defending champion Shruti Khanna and Parnita Garewal, could not emerge out of the pit of despair. They both had another poor round. The more they seemed to try to get their act right, the more they appeared to falter. They, however, seemed to be competing with each other as they fired 10 over 82 each. While Shruti was place on 163, Parnita was on 164. Both Shruti and Parnita were trailing by a very huge margin and it would be difficult for them to stage a comeback to win the title. Irinas display was commendable. It was more so since she was one of the youngest in the competition. While she made her reputation, many other appeared to have marred it. In the first nine, Irina had two bogeys and seven pars as she got two over 38. In the back nine, she played steadily with one birdie and another eight pars. This gave her a round of one over 73. Yesterday also she played a round of 73. Irina played with the spirit of every thing to gain and nothing to lose. This attitude saw her play consistently. I play my own game without worries of my opponents, said Irina. Vandanas game could be described in one sentence. She was up in clouds yesterday and down in dumps today. She was out in 40 and also back home in 40 (aggregate 80). Irina was also leading
for the Jahanara Trophy. She was tied with Josephine
Feasy (seniorhandicap 29). Their aggregate was 140. |
Steffi Graf feted in retirement ceremony NEW YORK, Nov 17 (Reuters) The final curtain came down on Steffi Grafs amazing tennis career last night with an emotional retirement ceremony at Madison Square Garden on the court where she won five of her 107 singles titles. This is just overwhelming. Its just incredible, Graf told the adoring New York crowd. Its only been a year since Ive been on court playing here. I started playing here 15 years ago, said the now 30-year-old legend, who was once ranked number one in the world for a record 186 consecutive weeks and held the top ranking for a total of 377 weeks another record. The farewell began with a video montage of career highlights, including her Golden Slam of 1988 when she became just the third woman to sweep the four Grand Slam tournaments in a single year and added an Olympic gold medal for good measure. I wasnt looking at the video. I couldnt, Graf admitted later. It was very emotional for me to be out there and reflect on my career ... But I could not watch it. Graf won 22 Grand Slam titles, becoming the only player, male or female, to win the four majors at least four times each four Australian Opens, six French Opens, seven Wimbledons, five US Opens in a remarkable 17-year career. She finished with 902 match wins and 115 losses. Graf, wearing a form-fitting long black slit skirt and matching top, entered the arena to a long standing ovation and repeatedly wiped her eyes. At the end of the video I said, I love New York. I do, I do love New York. Thanks for being here all these years for me, she said, receiving another prolonged ovation. Among the truckload of gifts Graf received was a special memento from each of the Grand Slams. From Australia she was presented with a framed Remember Melbourne poster, from Wimbledon a framed plaque listing all of her Wimbledon matches, and from the US Open she received a framed photograph of her holding the trophy with a piece of the court from the old Louis Armstrong stadium, where she won her five titles. But the one that brought the best reaction from the German superstar was the French Open gift the actual door from her Roland Garros locker inscribed with her singles finals wins. That was one of the pieces that was very, very special to me because I really always had that corner in the locker room and the ladies always knew that that was the locker that I wanted to have, she enthused. During her emotional speech, one fan called out: Wheres Andre? The mention of Agassi, with whom she has been linked romantically, brought a huge grin that helped Graf regain her composure. Hes probably at home watching, Graf said. You dont want to mess with him. The final tribute was the raising to the Madison Square Garden rafters of a banner bearing her name and the years she won the season-ending championships here. Grafs final season came complete with an almost fairy tale ending as she captured one last French Open, surprising even herself, and reached the final at Wimbledon, where she lost to Lindsay Davenport. It was after Wimbledon, she says, that she realised that she no longer had the fire that had driven her to greatness. A few weeks later she said she was sure it was time for her to call it quits, even though it was obvious she could still compete at the highest level. Tennis rules your day, your routines, she said. Depending on how you do ... It kind of gets into your personal life, too. I was really happy not being as moody any more and not having to go through these emotions. Its nice to have a lot calmer life, added Graf, who left with career tournament earnings of $ 21,839,777. Graf clearly felt no emotional conflict about her decision. I feel very happy about the time that I played and what Ive achieved, and how I went about it. And that gives me the peace to go on with different things in my life. And how can quite possibly the fiercest competitor ever to wield a tennis racket channel all that energy now? Im a pretty
tough competitor in shuffleboard, she joked. |

Ajay Jadeja for Johannesburg NEW DELHI, Nov 17 Ajay Jadeja will fly to Johannesburg tonight or tomorrow to get his injured right shoulder examined by South African expert Mark Ferguson and the doctors verdict will determine his inclusion for the upcoming Australian tour of the Indian cricket team. Indian coach Kapil Dev said that the condition of Jadejas shoulder would be known by November 21, a day ahead of the teams departure for the 76-day Australian tour. Jadeja is not 100 per cent fit. He will meet Dr Anant Joshi in Mumbai and travel with him to South Africa as we want to remove all doubts and get the final opinion of the worlds best doctor on shoulder injuries in sports, he told reporters after the one-day game between India and New Zealand here. Kapil Dev said if the doctor advises that the injury was minor and Jadeja can stand the entire tour, the former India vice-captain will go. Otherwise, the selectors will announce a replacement in time to leave with the team. Kapil Dev said the teams Australian physio Andrew Leipus examined the shoulder and also the x-ray taken, but could only say he may be or may not be well as a final verdict on the nature of injury could not be given offhand. Ferguson had also treated Javagal Srinath when he suffered a rotator cuff tear early in 1997. I will encourage his inclusion only if he is 100 per cent fit, Kapil Dev said. The most important question is whether he can last the entire tour, the coach said, adding he would make an announcement in Mumbai on November 21 to clarify the issue. Wicketkeeper Nayan
Mongia is being mentioned as a possible replacement for
Jadeja, especially after his young replacement M.S.K.
Prasads ordinary efforts in the present series. |

Hero group to open rural academies CHANDIGARH, Nov 17 (BOSR) We will open rural sports academies in the near future which is the need of the hour, said Mr Sunil Kant Munjal, Managing Director, Hero Cycles, who was here yesterday in connection with the Hero Golf 99, Chandigarh Open which commenced at the golf club here today. Mr Munjal said the academies would not be like the ones already running in the country. An attempt will be made to encourage people staying in the villages to send their wards for taking part in various sports disciplines. When asked why people from rural areas were being targeted, Mr Munjal said talent and the urge to do something for the country lay in the villages.
