Warrants against CA in JMM case
NEW DELHI, Nov 17 (UNI) A CBI court holding trial
in the MPs bribery case today issued non-bailable
arrest warrants against a chartered accountant, Sushil
Kumar, who allegedly helped four former JMM MPs to open
bank accounts to deposit the bribe money. Additional
Sessions Judge Ajit Bharihoke in his order said the
bailable warrants issued earlier had been received
unserved with a report that he was avoiding to come to
the court. In view of this, non-bailable warrants should
be issued against him for November 19. Former Prime
Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao is among the 11 accused
facing trial in the case relating to the alleged bribing
of opposition MPs to defeat a no-confidence motion
against the Rao government on July 28, 1993.Iran refugees
TEHERAN, Nov 17 (DPA) The Iranian Parliament has
voted to expel hundreds of thousands of refugees who are
working illegally and taking jobs away from Iranians, a
newspaper reported today. The Teheran Times said the
expulsions would take place during the next 18 months. It
said yesterdays vote affected mainly Afghans, who
are considered a source of cheap and obedient labour.
Iran claims to spend $ 2 a day for each of its nearly two
million refugees. The country reportedly receives $ 43
million from international bodies in refugee aid.
Suit against EC
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 (AP) A lawsuit was filed
against Malaysias Election Commission today,
seeking to halt November 29 elections because nearly
700,000 new voters were not being allowed to participate.
The civil suit was filed on behalf of Jomo Sundaram, an
outspoken economist allied with the opposition. He is one
of the potential voters who cannot participate because
the Election Commission claims it cannot complete the new
registration roll until next year. No date was fixed for
the hearing. The petition was filed by Karpal Singh, a
lawyer and opposition member of Parliament with the
Democratic Action Party.
Quake
aftershocks
ANKARA, Nov 17 (DPA) Massive aftershocks in the
region that was hit by last Fridays earthquake in
Turkey have once again spread fear throughout the region.
A total of 18 aftershocks were recorded yesterday forcing
the few people who had moved back into bricks and mortar
housing back out onto the streets. The biggest aftershock
was registered at 4.8 on the Richter scale and destroyed
a number of buildings that had been damaged in
Fridays tremor that registered 7.2. The police
warned people in the towns of Duzce, the epicentre of
Fridays quake, as well as Bolu and Kaynasli against
staying indoors.
Millennium draw
NEW DELHI, Nov 17 (UNI) Arun Kumar and Gurbinder
Kaur, both residents of Delhi, have been declared winners
of the "once in a millennium" draw, held by the
Singapore Tourism Board. The prize entitles them to an
all expense paid trip to Singapore during millenniamania
which kicked off in June 1999 and goes on till
August 2000. The campaign is a series of promotional
offers aimed at attracting visitors to experience and
enjoy Singapore.
Missiles tested
MOSCOW, Nov 17 (Reuters) Russia test-fired two
nuclear-capable ballistic missiles from a submarine in
the Barents sea in the Arctic north today, the navy said.
It said in a statement that the warhead sections
successfully hit a Russian testing ground on the
easternmost peninsula of Kamchatka. The head of the navy
said yesterday earlier tests had been carried out because
of US missile defence plans. The navy statement was
issued as President Boris Yeltsin was flying to Istanbul
for a summit of the organisation for security and
cooperation in Europe. He is expected to face criticism
from the West over Russia's military campaign in rebel
Chechnya and was vowed to take a tough line himself.
