BATHINDA
Injured:
Ten persons, including five women were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in dashed against a tree on the Bathinda-Goniana road on Friday. The injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital.

HOSHIARPUR
BSF recruits:
Mr Sarabjit Singh, DGP, Punjab, took a salute from 238 BSF recruits of batch No 137 and 138 in an impressive passing-out parade at the subsidiary training centre of the BSF at Kharkan on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sarabjit Singh commended the role of the BSF in safeguarding the country's borders. He also awarded medals to six recruits who excelled in training.

JALANDHAR
Appointed:
Mr Amarjit Singh Khalsa has been appointed district president of the All-India Rajiv Gandhi Brigade by Mrs Sonia Gandhi, chief patron of the brigade.

Nominated:
The following have been nominated office-bearers of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: Vice-president — Dr Sunit Jindal; Secretary — Dr Devinder Sohan Singh; Assistant Secretary — Mr Narinder Sharma; and Treasurer — Mr Ravinder Jindal.

NAWANSHAHR
Protest:
The Punjab Pensioners' Welfare Association will organise a state-level rally at Dera Bassi on Monday to protest against the failure of the government to meet the demands of the pensioners.

PATIALA
Cases settled:
Eleven cases were settled on the spot by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Jasbir Singh Bir,at a sangat darshan programme at Banur on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bir said officers should stick to a strict work schedule, and ensure that the grievances of the common man were redressed at the earliest.

International youth camp: The Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor, Dr Joginder Singh Puar, has accepted the invitation of the Mongolian Youth Development Centre to send an NSS contingent for the international youth camp to be held from July 20 to August 3 at Ulan Bator (Mongolia).

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Ministerial Staff Association, Excise and Taxation Commissioner's office, Patiala: President — Mr Amar Chand; vice-president — Mr Sukhwinder Singh; and General Secretary — Mr Ujjagar Singh.

PHAGWARA
Mishap:
Five pilgrims, including three boys and a girl, died and three others were injured when the tractor they were travelling in overturned on the Garhshankar-Anandpur Sahib road on Friday.

ROPAR
Rally:
The district unit of the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union, affiliated to the CPM, staged a dharna and held a rally in support of its demands near the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Friday. The demands include waiving loans up to Rs 5,000 procured by the mazdoors.

Elected: The Punjab Haryana and Chandigarh regional branch of the Indian Institute of Public Administration, in its annual general meeting, held here on Saturday, elected the following office-bearers for a term of two years: Chairman — Mr B.S. Ojha; Vice-Chairman — Dr S.L. Kaushik; Honorary Secretary — Mr D.V. Bhatia; and Treasurer — Prof Shital Prakash.

Meeting: The YWCA of Chandigarh on Saturday, organised a meeting of its members and senior citizens to discuss the changing political scene in India. The meeting was held at the YWCA premises in Sector 12. Senior members voiced their opinion about channelising the power of the youth in the right direction.

Cancer camp:
The Chief Medical Officer, Dr H.C. Nagpal, in a press note, said a camp for early breast cancer detection and education will be organised at General Hospital, Sector 6 here on Wednesday. Dr S. Trehan, will educate women about the techniques of self examination.

SAS NAGAR
Demanded:
The Punjab Sikh Danga Peerit Society has demanded that industrial plots should be allotted to the victims of anti-Sikh riots. In a press note issued here on Saturday, Mr Rajinder Singh, the President of the society, said though the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal had instructed the Punjab Urban Development Authority to consider the demand of the riot victims, nothing had been done by the body so far.

AMBALA
Body found:
The body of a newly born child was found in a Thakurdwara pond on Thursday. A case under Section 318 of the IPC has been registered.

Oil tanker: An oil tanker caught fire near the cantonment bus stand on Friday. Four fire tenders were pressed into service to extinguish the fire.

Power supply: Workers of the Indian National Lok Dal blocked traffic for about five hours near Shahzadpur on Friday in protest against frequent power cuts in the area. The blockade was lifted after an assurance by senior officials that normal power supply would be restored soon.

BHIWANI
Ayurvedic camp:
The district Ayurvedic Department, will organise a free ayurvedic camp at Indiwali village on Sunday as part of a campaign to bring the ayurvedic system of treatment at the doorsteps of the villagers. Mr K.S. Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, will be the chief guest.

FARIDABAD
Buffaloes burnt:
Two buffaloes were burnt alive and fodder and cowdung cakes worth several thousands of rupees were reduced to ashes in a fire at Badshahpur village on Thursday. A youth also received serious burn injuries.

Suicide: Yojan Karwal, a student of the local Shaheed Bhagat Singh College of Engineering and Technology, committed suicide, on Thursday. The Principal, Mr R.C. Behl, said the deceased was a fourth-year student of Industrial Engineering and was found hanging with a ceiling fan in his hostel room.

HISAR
Culprits:
Geeta and Sita of Bhigarh village in Fatehabad have alleged inaction by the police in bringing to book the culprits who had allegedly raped them about three months ago. In a written complaint to the DIG, they alleged they were being pressurised to withdraw the complaint and the police was siding with the culprits.
Sentenced: The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr B.S.Rawat, on Friday sentenced Chhabil Dass Kedia, a former president of the Grain Merchant Association, to seven years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him on a charge of dacoity.

KURUKSHETRA
Transferred:
Mr Alok Roy, SP, Security, took over as Superintendent of Police, Kurukshetra, here on Wednesday in place of Mr Shrikant Jadhav who has been transferred as SP, Security.

Electricity theft: The HVPN has registered a case of theft of electricity under Section 39 of the Electricity Act and Section 379 of the IPC against the managing partner of a local cold store here. The authorities of the HVPN said here on Friday that they had fined Rs 6,22,825 to the cold store owners for allegedly getting direct supply of electricity from the pole.

Arrested: The police has arrested three persons for allegedly running an illegal distiller and possessing illicit liquor. Over 180 pouches of liquor and 10 kg of poppy husk was seized from them.

Sadhu held: Shankar Gir, a sadhu of Ramana in Karnal district, was arrested under Sections 354 and 323 of the IPC for allegedly trying to outrage the modesty of young girl who had gone to Shri Krishna Mandir at Kirmach village.

Assembly elections:
Mr Vijay Somani, who recently resigned from the post of the state vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, has announced that he will contest the Assembly elections from Rewari constituency whenever they are held.

ROHTAK
Case registered:
The police has registered a criminal case under Sections 323, 452 and 698/34 of the IPC against four persons of Gaddi Kheri village for assaulting Sheel Kumar, who reportedly resisted their attempt to molest his wife.

SIRSA
Meeting:
The 10th annual meeting of the District Cooperative Milk Production Sangh (Ltd) was organised at the local milk plant on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Ganeshi Lal, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Haryana, said the sangh had played an important role in the advancement of green and white revolutions in the state.

SONEPAT
Tragic quarrel:
A domestic quarrel led to the killing of three members of a family at Khurampur village in this district on Friday. According to a report, 33-year-old Chameli allegedly poisoned her six-year-old daughter Priyanka and eight-month-old son Ankush in her house. After this, she committed suicide. The police is investigating the case.

Assault: The Gohana police has registered a case against Mangal of Gudha Basti in connection with an alleged assault on his wife. Mangal is reported to have hit his wife with an iron rod when he saw his wife with her lover in a compromising position in his house.

Shop owner injured: Kasan, owner of a barber shop, sustained injuries when he was attacked in his shop near the old bus stand at Gohana. The police has registered a case against the alleged assailant, Ajmer, a resident of Mahmoodpur village.top

SOLAN
Held:
The police arrested Sita Devi, Surjeeto, and Baalo, residents of Samana in Patiala district, on the charge of snatching a gold chain, weighing 41 gm from a woman passenger of a Subathu-bound bus in Dharampur on Friday.

SUNDERNAGAR
Inaugurated:
Mr Parkash Chaudhary, Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, inaugurated the 4 km-Bharari — Palohta road on Thursday. Addressing a gathering at Seharad village. Mr Chaudhary said in the current financial year Rs 205 crore would be spent on the construction of roads and bridges. He sanctioned Rs 1.40 lakh for the construction of a government primary school building at Seharad.
