AMRITSAR
Driving licences : The District Transport Officer, Mr Gurwaryam Singh, distributed over 1,700 driving licences at a special camp organised here on Sunday. The DTO said that his department would organise such camps more frequently primarily to educate the licence holders about rules and regulations of traffic and other aspects.

Ban flouted : The local Citizens Forum has alleged that in spite of ban orders issued by the District Magistrate, pasting of all kinds of posters on the walls of government and public buildings and other places, has continued. The president of the forum, Mr Brij Bedi, demanded that the administration should strictly enforce the ban and prosecute the offenders.

BARNALA
Elected: Ravinder Kumar Garg was elected president of the Bar Association here in a close contest on Saturday. He defeated Mr Jiwan Kumar.

GURDASPUR
Arrested:
The police arrested Harvinder Singh, alias Bunty, on Sunday while his accomplice Balwinder Singh, alias Bitta, is still at large for their alleged involvement in cheating and fraud cases. Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, said that the accused were wanted by the police in various districts for giving them false information in various cases regarding terrorists. He said that the accused, at several occasions were able to extort money from the police officers in this regard. The accused also duped Bachitar Singh of Rajada village of Rs 30,000 on the pretext of getting him recruited in the police. A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 419/420/109/34, IPC, in Sadar Police station, Pathankot.

JALANDHAR
Free camp:
More then 784 patients were examined by a team of 13 doctors in a free medical camp organised by Biba Niranjan Kaur Charitable Trust at Bashirpura here on Sunday. Mr Manoranjan Kalia, Minister for Health, Punjab, inaugurated the camp and announced a grant of Rs 10,000/- for the trust.

Free camps:
The local Shri Satya Nishkam Sabha will organise free eye operation camp, free heart disease camp, free orthopaedic camp at Amar Ashram on Wednesday, according to a press release of the sabha issued here on Sunday. Medicines, free of cost, will be given to the patients.

Blood donation camp: As many as 26 units of blood were collected here on Sunday in a blood donation camp organised by Shri Yog Vedant Sewa Samiti at Mata Kaushlaya Hospital.

Probe sought: The Punjab Union of Journalists has condemned the recent murder of two journalists in New Delhi and demanded a high level probe in identifying the culprits. Stating this in a press statement, Mr Prem Goyal, president of the union, said a deputation of journalists from Punjab would be sent to Delhi to urge the central government for taking concrete steps in solving the murder cases and for providing security to the journalists. He also deplored the low wages being paid to part-time correspondents.

Appointed:
Mr Balbir Singh Channa of Anandpur Sahib has been appointed organising secretary of the Backward Classes cell of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee by Mr Lakhwinder Singh, Chairman of the state unit of the cell.

Murdered:
A case under Sections 302, 452, 34, IPC, has been registered against Reaj Devgan, alias Raju, Vinod Kumar, alias Ladu and Amir Chand, all residents of Mallha village falling under Verowal police for allegedly murdering their brother-in-law Sandeep Kumar at Bath village on Saturday night. Sandeep Kumar was married to their cousin one and a half year back and their married life dispute is said to be the reason behind the murder.

Sankirtan sammelan: With a view to spreading the message of world peace, brotherhood and national unity, a three-day Harinam sankirtan sammelan is being organised from April 2 on a ground in Sector 45-D. Eminent saints of the country will grace the sammelan to be organised under the chairmanship of Yogi Bachan Nathji Bachan.

School inaugurated:
Mr O.P. Popli, SDM of SAS Nagar inaugurated Aanchal Preparatory School in Phase XI of the city. A cultural programme was presented by the students on this occasion. A karate demonstration and a play based on the story ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ were appreciated by the audience. Tammay, Chandan, Jatin and Shivant thrilled the audience by breaking marble slabs during the karate demonstration.

Counselling centre:
DAV Centenary Public School has decided to set up a student career counselling centre and a two-bed medical centre. Presiding over the annual prize distribution of the junior wing of the school, Mr G.D. Jindal, Director, DAV College Managing Committee, said a fine arts club under qualified teachers would also be set up at the new campus of the school.

SIRSA
Jail term:
Phuman Singh of Kheowali village was awarded one year's imprisonment and fine of Rs 1,000 by Mr K.R. Goyal, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, here on Saturday. According to the prosecution's case, the accused was arrested by the police on July 30, 1992 in fields near Kheowali village under the Excise Act, while running a working still. The police had seized 210 kg of Lahan and 72 bottles of illicit liquor from his possession.

Murdered: Bhola Singh (40) of Alikan village in this district was reportedly murdered with sharp-edged weapons by his brother Gurgent Singh and his wife at the village. According to sources, the accused was under the influence of liquor and he along with his wife, after returning from a marriage party, murdered Bhola Singh. The police has registered a case under Section 302, IPC.

Funds sanctioned:
A sum of Rs 3.50 crore has been sanctioned by the central government for parking facilities at Manali. Mr Chander Sen Thakur, Vice-Chairman, HPMC, Himachal Pradesh and MLA, Kullu, said this while addressing a public meeting at Mathisheel village, about 25 km from here.

Honoured:
A function was held at Sojha village on Friday in Jogindernagar subdivision. The Dalai Lama, honoured four journalist of Mandi district for their services in the field of journalism. He presented mementos and certificates of honour to Mr Birbal Sharma, Mr Murari Lal Sharma, Mr Hem Kant Katyan and Mr Ramesh Banta. Mr Gulab Singh, Speaker of H.P. Legislative Assembly, was also present on this occasion. Earlier His Holiness laid the foundation stone of a Tibetian School and addressed a gathering of Tibetans.
