Akram, Malik, Ijaz suspended

ISLAMABAB, July 25 (PTI) — Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram and two of his teammates — Salim Malik and Ijaz Ahmed — were today temporarily suspended from playing for the country following allegations of match-fixing and betting in international games, including those involving India.

The suspension was announced by the national cricket board’s (PCB) ad hoc committee chairman Mujibur Rehman, who said “We are not going to consider Wasim Akram, Salim Malik and Ijaz Ahmed for selection to the team till they prove themselves innocent”.

Akram, currently in England, reacted angrily to the charges saying “I haven’t done anything wrong” while Malik and Ijaz Ahmed could not be reached for comment.

Akram’s lawyer Khawaja Tariq Rahim said in Karachi that “if somebody thinks the careers of Wasim and others are over, he is living in a fool’s paradise. Wasim is a world class player who has been victimised”.

Rehman indicated no immediate action against five other star players — vice-captain Moin Khan, top batsman Inzamam-ul Haq, classy off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, paceman Waqar Younis and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed — who had been found guilty in an internal enquiry by PCB completed in August last year and against whom the anti-corruption Ehtesab (accountability) Burean had ordered framing of charges alongwith the three suspended players.

Justifying the temporary suspension of the three players, the PCB interim chief said only after finding “concrete evidences” against them that the Ehtesab Bureau yesterday recommended framing of charges against them.

When asked whether Akram had spoken to him from London, he said “Yes, Wasim called me up yesterday and told me he wanted to meet me and explain everything himself”. Akram was expected to reach Lahore on Tuesday to meet him.

To a question whether Akram denied allegations of match-fixing, Mujibur Rehman told PTI that he did not talk to Akram on that point as the Ehtesab Bureau report had not been out then.

The Bureau Chairman, Saifur Rehman, said EB had yesterday made public the PCB probe committee’s interim report submitted in August last year which contained specific match-fixing and betting charges against Akram, Malik and Ijaz Ahmed and recommends issuing of show cause notice asking why they should not be “disqualified for life” from playing for Pakistan.

Rehman alleged the bureau had collected “enough material” to prove the direct involvement of these three players. “We want action to be taken against those who are directly involved. It should be a lesson for others who may be indirectly involved,” he said.

The Ehtesab Bureau has ordered framing of charges against eight players, but there are indications this would be done after the report of the judicial commission probing betting and match-fixing charges in Pakistan cricket is received, possibly within a month.

Saifur Rehman said: “Our main focus is on these three players and we have already collected a lot of information about their activities earlier, and during the World Cup”, which he said included indiscipline during the championship and late night parties.

He said the authorities wanted to complete the process of investigation as soon as possible so that the issue could be closed before the start of the next season.

Saifur Rehman said the report prepared by EB was based on the interim report of the PCB probe committee as well as its own findings.

The three member PCB panel had based its report on the basis of allegations made by three former players, ex-captains Aamir Sohail and Rashid Latif besides bowler Ataur-Rehman.

It had also examined players like Basit Ali, Saeed Anwar, Aaqib Javed, Rameez Raja, former manager Intikhab Alam, former coach Haroon Rashid and a journalist.

The PCB report made specific charges against Akram for “purposely losing a 1994 Sharjah Cup match to India with bad field placement and also conspiring with Salim Malik to make Pakistan lose against New Zealand the same year by asking Ataur-Rehman to bowl against the field” and also “conspiring” with two well known bookies of Sharjah to ensure the defeat against India (in 1994).

The Ehtesab Bureau in its report has said that despite the PCB probe committee recommending that Akram, Malik and Ijaz Ahmed should not be included in the team they were selected in the World Cup squad.

Akram refutes claims

LONDON, July 25 (AFP) — Pakistan captain Wasim Akram today refuted claims of match-fixing.

Akram, commentating on the second Test between England and New Zealand at Lord’s, said: “It is a long story. I think what has happened is that in Pakistan sport has a lot to do with politics and this is more political than anything else. I am going to go back next week to sort this out.

“It is getting too much. They are ruining Pakistan cricket and the youngsters in Pakistan are scared of losing now. You won’t be able to win in future.”

Akram was also critical of the press for fuelling rumours.

“I don’t know what they are doing to their own team. I don’t believe what is happening. The press in Pakistan can do anything they want. You can sue them but it takes about 100 years to sort the case out.

“They write what they want to write, whatever will sell they write, so the press and media in Pakistan have a big hand in this campaign.”

But Akram emphasised he was innocent, insisting: “I refute any charges, I always have done. I haven’t done anything wrong.

“The problem in Pakistan is that everybody gambles, rich guy, poor guy, lawyer, they all gamble and when they lose they have to blame someone so they blame the Pakistan team.”

A judicial inquiry in Pakistan is investigating allegations that players were involved in rigging matches and Akram said he planned to return home next week to “sort this out”.

New Zealand score 9-wkt victory

LONDON, July 25 (AFP) — New Zealand convincingly won the second Test against England by nine wickets to level the four-match series 1-1 here today.

Needing just 58 runs in their second innings for their first Test victory at Lord’s, Kiwis reached their target for the loss of just one wicket on the fourth day after England had earlier been bowled out for 229 in the second innings.

It was New Zealand’s first win over England since 1986 and only their fifth in 80 meetings.

England, resuming at 107 for four, were dismissed for 229 in their second innings, with captain Nasser Hussain unable to bat after breaking his finger yesterday.

An innings defeat looked likely when two wickets fell early on but a stubborn stand between wicketkeeper Chris Read and New Zealand-born Andy Caddick added 78 in 25 overs either side of lunch.

Read, needing to prove his batting ability at Test level after making one and nought in his previous innings, produced some handsome drives and pulls in making 37.

Sahara Cup possible “if govts agree”

CALCUTTA, July 25 (UNI) — The Sahara Cup cricket championship between India and Pakistan at Toronto would not be a non-starter if the governments of both the countries consented to it, according to President of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Jagmohan Dalmiya.

“The future of the event now depends not on the cricket control boards of the two countries but on the green signals from their governments, “he said today, adding that since the Kargil conflict had come to an end the two nations might agree to hold the match as scheduled in this September.

Mr Dalmiya informed that the ICC had short-listed Sharjah, Bangladesh and Kenya as the prospective venue for the next Mini-World Cup. The ICC President also informed that he would soon visit Kenya to see the infrastructure there.

Mr Dalmiya intimated that the financial position of the ICC was now comparatively better than what it was when he took over as the President of the apex body of the cricket in the world. The ICC has £ 25 lakhs in its treasury, he said.

Asked now much profit the England and Wales Cricket Board made from the last World Cup, Mr Dalmiya intimated that the organisers of the last World Cup made some profit. But it was much less than what the organisers of 1987 and 1993 World Cup earned.

The ICC will wait and watch about the situation arising out of betting scandal in Pakistan, Mr Dalmiya said.

Asked to comment on the present betting scandal in Pakistan where some of their top cricket stars, including captain Wasim Akram, have been indicted of betting and match-fixing, Mr Dalmiya said: “We will wait and watch”.

Mr Dalmiya said that one-man judicial commission was already looking into the allegations in betting and match-fixing. “They have assured us that they would submit a report to us soon. We have not received any detail on this issue so far”, Mr Dalmiya added.

Asked to comment on a writing by Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja that some of the cricketers were involved in betting, Mr Dalmiya said: “Many people are making a mistake at the very outset that allegations for betting and allegations for match-fixing are not the same issues. One can bet in a match on who would win or lose. The ICC has no authority to stop it. But match-fixing is different where cricketers themselves have to be involved. Jadeja, in the same piece of writing mentioned that none of the cricketers was involved in match-fixing”. Mr Dalmiya added.

Railways, Haryana in title clash

TIRUPATI, July 25 (UNI) — Star-studded Indian Railways today set a title clash with Haryana in the final of the Nutrine 6th Women’s Hockey Federation Cup Championship tomorrow.

Defending champions Railways outplayed Bombay 3-0 while Haryana beat Bihar by an odd goal (2-1).

Railways, who won the Federation Cup four times in a row, moved into the final for the sixth successive time today without much ado. This was despite the absence of their star player Kamala Dalal, who suffered a finger injury when she was hit by a follow-through off a Bombay winger. Kamala received three stitches on her left hand and has been ruled out from playing the final.

The match between Railways and Bombay was one-sided. Bombay could not keep the tempo which they set at the start of the match. They almost scored in the 25th minute of the first half after being awarded a penalty corner. Bombay’s Sylvania Toppo struck a powerful shot but was superbly saved by Railway goalkeeper Tingu.

Two minutes later, Railways scored their first goal when Suraj Lata put her team ahead by one goal. The ball was netted by her after it rebounded from the pads of goalkeeper Seema Lakra off a Manjinder Kaur shot.

At half-time, Railways were leading by the lone goal. But three minutes after the break, umpire Radha Sukumar awarded a stroke to Railways when Bombay’s Sahina Kispotta obstructed a goal-bound scoop from Pritam Rani siwach. Manjinder Kaur made no mistake to improve her team’s score 2-0.

Manjinder soon engineered a move by dribbling the ball into the rivals’ circle and sent a crisp pass to the unmarked Jyoti Khullu, who came in as a replacement for Kamala Dalal. Jyoti crowned the exercise by netting the third goal.

Though Bombay did try to reduce the margin, they did not have the right player to penetrate and score a strong Railway defence.

Haryana played like a cohesive unit to storm into the final.

When compared to their earlier matches in the league phase, the national runners-up put up an improved performance today which enabled them to score two goals against one. With remarkable team effort, they rightly deserved a berth for the final.

In the 8th minute of the first session, Surinder Kaur took possession of the ball on the 25-yard line and gave a forward pass after dribbling into the ‘dee’ but there was a lot of gap. Bihar goalie Navri Mandu advanced a little but saw the ball rolling into the net (1-0).

Gill rules out comeback by Subbiah,
3 others

NEW DELHI, July 25 (UNI) — There is no chance that Sabu Varkey, A B Subbiah, Sandeep Somesh or Ashish Balal will come back into the Indian hockey team, according to IHF president K P S Gill.

“As for Dhanraj Pillay and Mukesh Kumar (the two others who make up the ‘super six’), it just depends on their fitness. They have enough skill and experience. They don’t need to tour abroad..if the IHF finds that these two are fit to last a match, they will play the 2000 Olympics”, Mr Gill said.

In an interview to ‘Indian hockey. Com’, the IHF president said “let me make this very clear. Nobody can ever force me to select a team that I don’t believe in. Nobody can do that. As far as the super six are concerned, I think we should reduce it to the super two”.

Asked why after winning the gold medal in the Bangkok Asian Games, six players were dropped, he said most of the players could not last a full match. It was the same team that finished seventh or eighth in the Olympics and did not have a great finish in the World Cup at Utrecht.

“The Asian Games gold medal came against a weak opposition. South Korea was the only strong team we faced in the final and we won that on strokes. Fine, we had a great win after 32 years. But it’s time to rebuild. Most of these players cannot last a full match. And let me say this that even Germany, Holland, Korea are all in the rebuilding stage..I would also stress that six or eight players don’t make a team. The team makes a team. A team that is fit and committed and fit to last a match”.

Mr Gill said the Asian Games was a gold medal, India were capable of winning anyway. But as far as these ‘super six’ players are concerned he had always wanted to drop them.

“But I didn’t want a Utrecht World Cup situation where your two key players are injured and the team comes to a standstill. That’s why I am preparing three teams and whosoever is fit from this vast base will play in the Olympics”, he said.

Replying to a question why there wasn’t a policy of continuity regarding coaches, Mr Gill said coaches were changed after one match in the World Cup football.

He said Army Headquarters said Harcharan Singh was required in Kargil which was why Baskaran was appointed coach.

“Continuity will not work in our country. Kaushik was the coach for the Bangkok Asian Games but how many people know what happened there. I don’t want to sit here and criticise people but in one incident the police had to be brought because the team was fighting among themselves. I want a coach who is steady and committed.”

“At the drop of hat, our coaches make learned statements. They go and say whatever they want on their own. My policy is simple for the team. I want a team that is physically fit and willing to last a full match”.

Mr Gill said the IHF had spoken to a few foreign coaches but nobody was free. Paul Lissek was asked and when it seemed that he would come the German Hockey Federation called him back because their side was doing badly. An Australian was approached but he was also committed.

The IHF then got in touch with a Dutch coach but unfortunately by then he had shifted his focus to football, he said.

Mr Gill lashed out at journalists for constantly criticising the IHF and not writing anything constructive about the body and pushing certain players.

“I select a player by his performance. Not by his reputation. If you drop the players, the press can’t take it. In Atlanta, we couldn’t reach the semifinals because of umpiring but that doesn’t mean that you will not fight for the fifth place. Has the Press criticised the team for not having enough guts to fight for the fifth position in the Atlanta Olympics?”.

Mr Gill, when asked if there was any area that he had failed in, said he wished he could have done more in involving youngsters and done more by way of more academies.

“If you look at Holland, Germany, Australia, Olympians come and help the sub juniors and juniors. Our Olympians are ready to make statements. Tell them about constructive thinking to help the game out and they don’t have the time. If hockey is alive it is only due to the Sports Authority of India and the various academies that are being run. I still maintain that if India can have 50-60 academies, hockey in three or four years will be back.”

Azhar’s fitness ‘to be known in 10 days’

MUMBAI, July 25 (PTI) Ä Mohammad Azharuddin will be able to tell the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) within the next 10 days whether he would be fit to play in the August 22-31 tri-series in Sri Lanka after undergoing shoulder surgery last month in London, according to board president Raj Singh Dungarpur.

Azharuddin, who stayed back in London after failing to lead India to the coveted World Cup for undergoing a shoulder operation there on June 19, met the board chief here last evening after returning home last night.

“Azhar met me today and explained that he had not undergone an operation for a rotator cuff tear as was thought earlier but was operated upon for arthroplasty of the acromio clavicular joint on his right shoulder,” Mr Dungarpur said.

“He said he had reasonable movement on the operated shoulder. He will tell us whether he will be able to play in the next 10 days,” the board president added.

The Indian selectors are to meet on July 28 to name the captain for the Lankan tour and are expected to select the rest of the team members in the first week of August.

Azhar has led the national team for most of the nineties barring the 17-month period from August 1996 to December 1997 when Sachin Tendulkar was the captain.

Brazil thrash Germany 4-0

GUADALAJARA (Mexico), July 25 (AFP) — Ä Newly crowned Copa America champions Brazil thrashed Germany 4-0 in the opening game of the FIFA Confederations Cup here last night while the USA deservedly beat New Zealand 2-1 in the other fixture in group B.

Brazil coach Wanderley Luxemburgo had chosen not to bring many of his Copa stars — notably Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos and Amoroso — to Mexico for this eight-team tournament but an inexperienced side produced a compelling win over their main group B rivals.

It was a four-goal blitz in the last half hour of the match that gave victory to the team still ranked the best in the world by FIFA.

Ze Roberto broke the deadlock after 62 minutes.

It was the hugely impressive substitute Warley - on for Christian - who started the move feeding Ronaldinho Gaucho, who set up Ze Roberto.

That opened the floodgates and just nine minutes later it was Ronaldinho Gaucho, of Brazilian club Gremio, who made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after Warley had been fouled by Michael Ballack.

Germany then capitulated and promising Palmeiras midfielder Alex made the scoreline even more embarrassing for Europe’s representatives with two more goals in the last five minutes of the match.

Alex had replaced Flavio Conceicao and his first was a header after a superb cross from Warley. His second goal was an excellent long-range effort after he had lost his marker.

The main creative player for Germany was their veteran libero Lothar Matthaus the sole survivor of the German team that reached the World Cup final on Mexican soil in 1986.

The only real scare for the Brazilians was when goalkeeper and Copa hero Dida made a double save from Mehmet Scholl and Michael Preetz in the first period.

Two Brazilians - midfielder’s Emerson and Vampeta - were booked while Scholl was cautioned for Germany.

Luxemburgo played down the victory, saying: “Although we have won by four goals, Brazil were playing a very powerful German team although the climate at Guadalajara did not really permit them to play at their full potential.”

Ribbeck did not mince his words even though he had admitted before the start of the tournament that the Germans had been somewhat reluctant to take up their invitation to this tournament.

He said: “We must change many things, many tactics and many combinations of players, of course. There will be many changes.”

Jeev placed joint 50th

NEW DELHI, July 25 (PTI) — Top Indian pro Jeev Milkha Singh fired a one-under par 70 to be placed joint 50th going into the final round of the Dutch Open Golf Tournament at Hilvershumsche, the Netherlands.

The 27-year-old Indian, who returned cards of 72 and 70 in the first two rounds was clubbed together with four other players at one-under 212 after the fourth round at the Hilvershumsche course yesterday.

Jeev, who missed out making to the British Open main draw by just two strokes earlier in the month, has not had a very good time on the European Tour recently.

The lone Indian on the highly-competitive tour slumped badly in two of his last three tournaments — the European Grand Prix and Irish Open — after going into the final round placed among the top top.

Jeev had a highly-forgettable outing at the Loch Lomond Invitational in Scotland where he missed the cut.

Dokic puts Aussies in World Group

AMSTERDAM, July 25 (AP) — Teenage sensation Jalena Dokic clinched a Fed Cup World Group place for Australia yesterday with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Dutchwoman Kristle Boogert.

The win gave Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead over the Netherlands in the final of this eight-country qualifying tourney.

The inconsequential doubles match was not played.

Earlier Australian No.2 Nicole Pratt had to dig deep to win a 2hr 45 min marathon contest against Miriam Oremans 6-4 3-6 10-8.

Oremans looked down and out at 0-3 and 0-40 behind in the final set but rallied to come back to 3-3. The Dutchwoman saved a match point at 5-6 with an overhead but squandered a chance to serve for the match at 7-6.

Pratt’s consistency and confidence returned and she eventually won the 89-minute final set 10-8.

Australia is the last of 13 nations to qualify for the 2000 World Group.

Sasikiran adjudged best junior player

BIEL (Switzerland), July 25 (PTI) — India’s national champion K Sasikiran was adjudged the best junior player after finishing 8th out of 40 players in a Blitz tournament here yesterday.

Sasikiran, who has to win all his remaining six matches in the International Open Chess Tournament to claim the GM title, has entered the Blitz tournament on the rest day to garner as much match practice as possible.

The Indian upset GM Kveinys of Lithuania and held GM Sturua of Georgia to log six points from nine games.

Russian GM Shariazhdanov won the title on tiebreak after logging seven points. Israeli GM Yehudo Grunfeld, who also logged seven points, had to settle for the second spot.

Hinds in 14-member Windies squad

BRIDGETOWN, (Barbados) — July 25 (Reuters) — Young Jamaican batsman Wavell Hinds has been named in a 14-man West Indies squad for a triangular one-day tournament in Singapore in September.

The tournament will also feature India and Zimbabwe.

Hinds, a left-handed middle order batsman and part-time medium pacer, has been groomed on the West Indies’ last two A team tours of South Africa and India.

He was called up for the final Test of the home series against Australia earlier this year but was not included in the final team.

Fast bowler Nixon McLean, who was omitted from the World Cup squad, has been recalled while left-handed opener Adrian Griffith, who played in the last two Tests against Australia, is also in the squad which will be captained by Brian Lara.

Gifted young Jamaican right-handed batsman and off-spin bowler Ricardo Powell, who played one match in West Indies’ unsuccessful World Cup campaign has also been retained.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said in a statement it ‘’sees the need to use these short tours to expose and groom young talented cricketers.’’

Veteran Curtly Ambrose has been left out but the WICB said it had been decided to alternate him and fellow fast bowler Courtney Walsh in forthcoming tours.

“Having regard to the packed regional and international cricket programme involving the West Indies between now and next June, the long term future of West Indies cricket, and the physical demands on players, especially long-serving fast bowlers Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, the West Indies selectors have decided not to include them together on teams to tour Singapore from August 29 to September 9, and Sharjah from October 10-22,’’ it said.

“As a consequence, while Walsh has been included in the team to tour Singapore, he will be replaced by Ambrose on the tour of Sharjah.’’

Apart from Ambrose, the other three players axed from the World Cup squad are batsmen Stuart Williams, Phil Simmons and Keith Arthurton.

West Indies squad:

Brian Lara (captain), Jimmy Adams, Ridley Jacobs, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Sherwin Campbell, Ricardo Powell, Mervyn Dillon, Reon King, Courtney Walsh, Hendy Bryan, Nehemiah Perry, Adrian Griffith, Wavell Hinds, Nixon McLean.

Singapore match schedule:

September 2 — West Indies v Zimbabwe September 4 — India v Zimbabwe; September 5 — India v West Indies; September 7 — Final.

Pan-Am Games

Canada bag two more gold medals

WINNIPEG (Canada), July 25 (AP) — The Americans have let the Canadians have their party. Now three days in, the USA are getting serious.

The nation that has won more gold medals than any other country at the Pan American Games moved to the top of the medals table of the 13th edition of the regional Olympics with four gold and a slew of silver and bronze.

Dawn Ellerbe of the USA won the first gold medal in athletics at the Games, overcoming several past failures in international competition.

“It’s my first Pan Am Games and winning is very special,” Ellerbe said yesterday after smashing the meet record in the women’s hammer throw with a heave of 65.36 metres feet-5 in her final attempt.

Yipsi Gonzalez Moreno of Cuba, finished second with a throw of 63.03 m while Caroline Wittrin of Canada took the bronze with an effort of 61.28m.

Ellerbe has been the US Champion for the past four years, but finished seventh in both the 1997 World University Games and the 1998 Goodwill Games and fourth at this year’s World Universities.

The USA began closing in on Canada when Jason Meidinger won the 50-metre pistol shooting event. Meidinger scored 648.1 points, 0.4 ahead of compatriot Darryl Szarenski. Cuban Norbeli Barzaga took the bronze.

But it slipped past their northern neighbours and hosts with pair of 1-2 finishes in women’s rifle and men’s shot put.

Jayme Dickman and Nancy Johnson finished first and second in the women’s three-position rifle competition and were matched by their male team-mates in shot put. Brad Mears won with a heave of 19.93 m followed by Jamie Beyer at 18.95, giving the USA a gold-silver sweep in that event for the second straight Games.

The USA has won the gold chase all but twice in 12 editions of Pan Ams, finishing second the other two.

Hosts Canada enjoyed a good day at the Games, though.

The Canadians claimed gold medal in the gymnastics team competition before a small but vocal pro-Canadian crowd at Winnipeg Arena. The USA, who had been favoured, settled for the silver. Canada also won the Pan Am gold in 1979, the only other year the USA failed to win.

Cuba easily beat the Americans for the men’s team gold, with Canada getting the bronze. Cuba’s Eric Lopez had the top all-around score, 56.775.

In the women’s triathlon, Canada’s Sharon Donnelly completed the 1,500-metre swim, 40-kilometre bicycle course and 10-kilometre run in 1 hour, 59 minutes, 14.90 seconds, 18 seconds ahead of Carl Moreno of Brazil.

The wins in triathlon and gymnastics hiked Canada’s gold total to six.
