Refresher course:
A three-day refresher course for in-service teacher was organised by the Directorate of Education, at Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School. More than 800 teachers from 40 institutions participated.

Rotarians exhorted: The Punjab DGP, Mr Sarabjit Singh, while installing office-bearers of the local Rotary Club on Friday exhorted Rotarians to keep pursuing professional excellence.

FAZILKA
Suicide:
Subhash Chander Verma, a junior engineer in the Panchayati Raj Department, allegedly committed suicide by jumping in a canal, near Bodiwala Pitha village, 15 km from here on Saturday.

GURDASPUR
Stolen:
A scooter, (PB-06-A-8618) belonging to an advocate was reportedly stolen from the district courts on Saturday. A Maruti Zen car, owned by the advocate, was also stolen about three months ago. A case has been registered.

LUDHIANA
Bribe:
The Divisional Engineer, Telecom, Anandpur Sahib, was caught by the Vigilance Bureau while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a contractor on Thursday. The SP, Vigilance Bureau, Ludhiana range, Mr B.K.Garg, said Rs 1,30,854 lakh had been recovered and nine bottles of whisky seized from his possession.

MALERKOTLA
Saint arrives:
Shri Manohar Muni Maharaj has arrived for chaturmas and will stay here for four months. The Jain saint along with his disciples, has been staying at Jain Sathanak in Moti Bazar where sermons will be held daily between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.

MOGA
Car thefts:
Incidents of car thefts have increased here during the past few days. According to a report here on Sunday, a new Maruti car (DNA-2218) was stolen from a marriage palace here. Four cars have already been stolen from here in the past three months.
Demonstration:
Members of the adhoc Democratic Teachers Union, assisted by several other unions, staged demonstrations here on Sunday in support of their demands which include regularisation of their services and checking corruption in government departments.
Milk rates up: Local milk processing plants, milkmen and milk dairies on Saturday increased the rates of milk by Re 1.

SANGRUR
Medical camp:
The local State Bank of India organised a free medical check-up camp at Ghabdan village, 10 km from here, on Sunday. Over 100 persons suffering from various chest diseases were examined and given medicines free of cost.
Rail traffic restored:
Two passenger train services which were suspended a few days ago, were restored from Saturday. Giving this information, Mr Mahesh Chaturvedi, station superintendent of the local railway station, said a train from Bathinda to Rohtak via here and another train, 2-BRB, suspended during the Kargil operation, had been restored.
Probe sought:
Subhash Sharma and Shyam Sharma have demanded probe into the mysterious death of their brother Jagmohan at Hisar on July 21. Alleging that he was killed by his second wife and her paramour, they have demanded that a criminal case be registered against the accused and they be arrested.

Died: Mrs Unni Devi, mother of Mr S.L. Gupta, Deputy General Manager, Commercial Banking, State Bank of India, died here on Sunday. She was 85. She leaves behind three sons and one daughter. She was cremated in the evening.
Welfare association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Subash Nagar (Mani Majra) Social Welfare Association: President — Mr Girish Chand Sharma; General Secretary — Mr Daya Nand Yadav; and Cashier — Mr Anil Khurana.

FATEHABAD
Farewell:
Members of Fateh Dhwaj, a police-public coordination forum, on Friday, gave a farewell to the founder chairman of the forum, Mr Rajbir Deswal, who has been transferred to Hisar as Commandant of the Third Battalion of the Haryana Armed Police.

SONEPAT
Students hurt:
Sharvan Kumar and Parveen, both students, were injured when they were attacked by an armed group of students belonging to a rival group outside a college here on Saturday. A case has been registered against the assailants who are at large.
Rampage:
A large number of film-goers went on the rampage and smashed furniture, fans, tubelights and windowpanes in a cinema house here on Saturday. Trouble arose when a new film, which was being screened, was stopped due to some technical defect in the roll of the film. The police was called to disperse the crowd.
Murdered:
Siri Ram (35), a resident of Garhi Jhinjhara village, was murdered by four armed youths while he was sitting with his brother at a railway crossing, 16 km from here, on Saturday. The victim, who was allegedly involved in the murder of a former sarpanch of the village, had been released on bail recently. The railway police has registered a case.

SIRSA
Sentenced:
Boopa Ram, Gandhi Ram, Ekta Singh and Ram Singh of Banni village in this district were on Saturday awarded six months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 each was imposed on them by the Chief Judicial Magistrate for illegally irrigating their fields and damaging a water channel.

Arrested:
The police has arrested Roshan Lal and Dharam Singh of Tarwaad village for possessing 19 logs of khair wood without a permit Police Superintendent Anurag Garg said here on Saturday that three cases had been registered for illegal felling of wood.
