India go down to Thailand 0-2

BANGKOK, July 17 (PTI) — Defensive errors cost India dear as they went down to Thailand by two second half goals in the first leg of the pre-Olympic Asia group-9 football qualifier at Suphan Buri near here today.

India, who were looking for at least a draw, held on gamely in the first half but were outplayed by their nippy rivals after change of ends.

Bamruang Boonprom put the hosts ahead three minutes into the second half and Nirut Surasiang made it 2-0 in the 76th minute and the score stayed that way till the end with Indian forwards messing up a few chances towards the fag end.

India had a golden chance to reduce the margin 10 minutes from the end, but forward Bijen Singh shot wide from the top of the box with the defence in disarray and the goalkeeper out of position.

An away goal would have counted for two which would have put India at a big advantage hosting the Thais in the second leg to be held in Calcutta on July 24.

India, who woke up only after going 0-2 down, were again denied by a superb goal-line save by Jackapong Hanshwan. Bijen’s goal-bound header off a fine chip by Hardeep Sangha was headed out by the tall and well-build defender.

A couple of minutes later Renedy Singh failed to connect a fine pass from Sangha inside the box. The midfielder was clear after shaking his marker but went for a first-time shot with the all the time at his disposal and only kicked air.

The Indian tactics against the speedy Thais seemed to work well early on as coach P.K. Banerjee’s defensive tactics enabled them end the first half goal-less. The Indians played possession football in the first half and their accent on the midfield worked to a great extent to keep the Thai attacks in check.

But the superior hosts stepped up pace and rattled the Indian defence with a series of long passes and quick release of the ball.

Boonprom struck the first goal off a superb cross from a Puttan, who made a fine run down the right flank to catch the Indian defence off guard.

Indian mis-passess proved a major worry as the opportunistic Thais kept a clear edge almost throughout the second half.

Nirut Surasiang then put the hosts 2-0 up when defender Falguni Dutta made a horrendous mistake in making a clearance inside the box.

Dutta tried to clear but completely missed the ball and the tall midfielder unleashed a powerful shot that swerved and completely beat an out-of-position goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey to enter the net.

Thailand’s strategy to go all out in the second half worked very well as India, playing in their 32nd Olympic qualifying game, totally lost their grip in the midfield.Top

Pak board suspended

ISLAMABAD, July 17 (PTI) — Pakistan President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar last night suspended the Cricket Board of Pakistan (PCB) and appointed a two-member ad hoc body in its place in a drastic move following the national team’s World Cup final debacle and charges of betting and match-fixing.

Mr Tarar, who is also the patron of PCB, suspended the entire management led by Chairman Khalid Mehmood and appointed the interim panel under Mujib-ur Rehman, brother of Sair-ur Rehman, close friend of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chairman of the Government’s Ehtesab (Accountability) Bureau which is probing allegations against players at the World Cup.

The government move has been speculated in Pakistan cricketing circles since the team’s capitulation to Australia on June 20 after being shot out for 132 batting first.

The President, who took the decision under powers vested in him in the PCB constitution, appointed former skipper Imran Khan’s cousin Javed Zaman as a member and authorised the panel to co-opt three or four members, an official announcement said.

The appointment of Mujib-ur Rehman at the helm of affairs of Pakistan cricket, however does not come as a surprise as speculation has been rife for several months that he may be handed over the charge of cricket affairs since the betting and match-fixing controversy engulfed Pakistan cricket team last year.

Though Mr Rehman has no cricketing background of any significance, his appointment seems to have been clearly influenced by the fact that his brother Saif-ur Rehman heads the Ehtesab Bureau.

The Ehtesab Bureau had been asked by the government to look into allegations that Pakistan players made merry into the wee hours throughout the competition in England, while Khalid Mehmood had spoken against such a move.

There is every possibility that Nawaz Sharif may be involved in the latest move as he is known to be a very keen cricket enthusiast and despite his busy schedule, he never misses his weekly round of the game.

The suspension of PCB comes barely a few days after the PCB council, the supreme body of the board, which met last Sunday strongly defended the Wasim Akram-led team, rejecting all allegations of betting and match-fixing during the World Cup.

Though there were no immediate comments availabe from either Mr Mahmood or Chief Executive Majid Khan, Mujib-ur Rehman has reportedly indicated an outline of his plan of action to improve the cricket set up in the country.

Mujib-ur Rehman has said he planned to “decentralise the whole system” (of the game) in Pakistan and that he would chalk out his plan of action after he returned home next week.

Mr Rehman, who is currently in Doha, Qatar, told a leading Pakistan newspaper that he had been assigned a big task by President Tarar. “First, I will study the whole system and then get down to the bottom of the problem,” he said.

“I have no enemies and grudges against anyone. I respect the players but I have no affiliation with anybody,” he said, adding that he would talk to about 20 people involved in running the game as part of his decentralisation plan and form committees in big cities like Karachi and Lahore for that.

The interim panel chief said he will select the team of three of four members to run PCB on his return home.Top

Windies meet Lanka in opener

DUBAI, July 17 (PTI) — Sri Lanka will clash with the West Indies in the inaugural tie of the three-nation Coca Cola Cup one-day cricket tournament at Sharjah to be held from October 13 to 20.

Brazil meet Uruguay today

ASUNCION, July 17 (Reuters) —Defending champions Brazil meet outsiders Uruguay tomorrow in what threatens to be an anti-climatic final of a Copa America which, until the quarterfinals, had been packed with drama.

Uruguay, fielding what is almost a youth team, have reached the final with a record of one win, two draws, two defeats and a paltry four goals scored in their five matches.

They qualified from the first round as one of the best third-placed teams and won their quarterfinal and semifinal ties on penalties after 1-1 draws.

Brazil, in their third successive Copa America final, have won all their games but have been anything but inspiring, their players appearing restricted by the tactics of coach Wanderley Luxemburgo.

Their game has been based on packing their midfield, soaking up pressure and hitting their opponents with the individual brilliance of Ronaldo, Amoroso and Rivaldo.

The absence of the host nation means that organisers will have difficulty filling the defenders of the Chaco stadium, ticket prices having been hiked to between 30 and 40, a staggering price in Paraguay.

Local interest in the tournament had died since Paraguay were knocked out on penalties by Uruguay in the quarterfinals. Asuncion is devoid of the atmosphere and excitement which accompanied the tournament while they were still in.

Paraguay, like Peru and Colombia, have been victims of an unjust format that fails to reward teams for winning games early in the competition.

As eight of the 12 teams progressed from the first round, a single victory in three first round matches proved enough for a quarterfinal place.

Paraguay were knocked out without losing a match, winning two and drawing two, Colombia won threematches, lost one and conceded only one goal, while Peru also fell despite scoring seven goals and losing only one of four games played. All three went out in the quarterfinals.

The four quarterfinals produced an aggregate 16 goals and the first round also had its share of ecxitement, notably the five-penalty match in which Colombia beat Argentina 3-0 and Argentina’s Martin Palermo missed three penalties.

In contrast, the two semifinals this week were dreary affairs.

Brazil’s Amoroso and Ronaldo both go into the final on four goals each as joint top scorers, though Ronaldo suffered the rare indignity of being substituted in the 2-0 win over Mexico on Wednesday after a below-par performance.

“I’m not upset,” he insisted on Thursday.

Uruguay’s top player has been goalkeeper Fabian Carini, who at the age of 20 appears to have a great future.

Midfielder Pablo Garcia is suspended but the real absentees are European-based players such as Gustavo Poyet, Alvaro Recoba and Paolo Montero rested after a long season with their clubs.

Argentine coach Daniel Passarella has also given Paraguay a miss, handing over the reins instead to under-20 team coach Victor Pua.

If Uruguay win the title, the Uruguayan public, already suspicious of having an Argentine in charge of their national team, will be wondering if Pua does not deserve the job on permanent basis.Top

Top players bite the dust

CARNOUSTIE (Scotland), July 17 (Reuters) — Despite the midway cut at the British Open being set at 12-over par, there was no shortage of big names packing their suitcases last night.

Leading the way in the hall of shame was hot-shot Spanish teenager Sergio Garcia, whose 12-over par 83, added to his Thursday disaster of 89 left him 30 over par on 172 — the worst score of anyone completing two rounds.

The 19-year-old said he was not embarrassed by his score and has put it behind him. He also said that, for the first time in 10 years, he would not watch the rest of the Open because he didn’t think it deserves it. “It’s just not that good,’’ he said.

Not far behind Garcia was compatriot Steve Ballesteros. The three-times winner finished with back-to-back double bogeys for a 15-over par 86 and a total of 24-over.

The scowling Spaniard could do nothing right and showed his mounting frustration by regularly slamming clubs into anything hard that came into view.

Garcia’s Fijian playing partner Vijay Singh, ranked fourth in the world, also crashed out on 18-over while last year’s winner Mark O’Meara made a miserable defence of his title as he limped out on 15-over.

It was the first time the defending champion had missed the cut since Mark Calcavecchia in 1990 at St Andrews — when two over par was not good enough to progress.

Calcavecchia and 1996 winner Tom Lehman also missed out on Friday, as did 1995 US Open champion Corey Pavin and last month’s US Open runner-up Phil Mickelson.Top

Susanthika may run in SAF Games

COLOMBO, July 17 (AP) — Sri Lanka’s best-known and controversial runner, Susanthika Jayasinghe, now living in the USA, may take part in the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Nepal in September, a top sports official said on Thursday.

“There is every possibility that Susanthika will run at the games,” Sports Minister S.B. Dissanayake said.

If Susanthika runs, it will be her first appearance in an Asian meet since she pulled out of the Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.

Susanthika in the past had accused an unnamed Sri Lankan sports official of sexual harassment. She left for the USA last year, saying she saw no future for herself in Sri Lanka. From the USA she has been taking part in various international meets.

Sri Lanka will send about 300 competitors to Kathmandu to take part in the games from September 24 to October 4. They will compete in athletics, swimming, karate, taekwondo, volleyball, table tennis, shooting, boxing, football, wrestling, kabbadi and weightlifting.Top

Horne, Astle hit tons

CANTERBURY (England) — July 17 (AFP) — Opener Matthew Horne and Nathan Astle both completed centuries yesterday as New Zealand took a stranglehold on the second day of their four-day match against Kent.

After restricting Kent to 201, the Kiwis resumed at 103-1 with Horne on 57. They went on to make a massive 423-4 by stumps with Horne contributing 172, Astle 121, and Roger Twose 59 not out.

The run spree was a valuable morale-booster for the Kiwis, who face England in the second Test at Lord’s next week.

The Kiwis now have a lead of 222 after Astle sparkled and Horne smashed a six to take him to 150 that destroyed the windscreen of a parked car.

Horne’s 172 from 358 balls (two sixes, 19 fours) was the highest by a New Zealander against Kent in the nine matches between the sides, beating the 165 of former captain John Reid in 1965.

Astle’s 121 came from 186 balls and contained two sixes and 20 fours as he struck the ball with power and freedom through the off side, so sure of his power that many times he did not bother to run.

The only batsman to miss out was captain Stephen Fleming, taken behind the wicket off a loose shot for 24 to give strongly-built debutant James Golding his maiden first-class wicket.

Fleming set a target of 500 for his team, and there is enough playing time left for New Zealand to reach that objective and bowl Kent out to record their first victory over the county.

Astle was eventually out attempting to sweep off-spinner Darren Scott, the ball flicking off his forearm before being taken by Martyn McCague at slip.

Kent 201 (E.Smith 72; C.Cairns 7-46) v New Zealand 423-4 (M.Horne 172, N.Astle 121, R.Twose 59 no).Top

Pillay dropped

NEW DELHI, July 17 (PTI) — Mercurial forward Dhanraj Pillay is a major omission in the 31-member list of men’s team probables chosen by the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) for a 23-day tour of Africa to begin from August 12.

Pillay, who led India to a memorable Asian Games gold at Bangkok last December was since ignored due to the rift between IHF and senior players, but made his mark as a member of the IHF XI which won the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Tournament in Chennai last week.

The probables will undergo a camp at Amritsar’s Guru Nanak Dev University from July 19 to 31 under the guidance of chief coach Vasudevan Baskaran.

In their continuing build-up for next year’s Sydney Olympics, for which India have already qualified by virtue of winning the Bangkok Asian Games gold last year, the team will begin their campaign with a five-test series against South Africa.

The Test series, to be played at Johannesburg from August 12 to 21, will be followed by a two-test series to be played against Zimbabwe at Harare on August 24 and 26.

The Indian team will then take part in a four-nation tournament to be held in Nairobi to mark the golden jubilee celebrations of the Kenyan Hockey Association. Egypt and hosts Kenya will be the other two teams with South Africa expected to be the fourth side.

Patrick Rafter, Hewitt put Australia in command

BROOKLINW, July 17 (Reuters) — Teenaged Lleyton Hewitt made a smashing Davis Cup debut and US Open champion Patrick Rafter completed the singles sweep on Friday as Australia took a commanding 2-0 lead over the USA in their Davis Cup quarter-final.

The 18-year-old Hewitt, ranked 32, yesterday cut No. 8 Todd Martin down to size with surprising ease in a 6-4 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 6-0 upset victory in sweltering heat on the showcase hardcourt at Longwood Cricket Club.

Rafter followed Hewitt’s heroics with an efficient 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4 dismissal of the US team’s inspirational leader, Jim Courier.

The pair of victories put the US team on the brink of elimination.

Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras — the world’s top-ranked player the last six years whose absence from the singles lineup is sure to stir debate — will partner Alex O’Brien doubles against Sandon Stolle and Mark Woodforde needing a win to keep the hosts in the running.

Hewitt, a late replacement for injured Mark Philippoussis, outplayed the erratic Martin, who sprayed 79 unforced errors against the short, nimble-footed Australian, whose aggressive baseline game encourages comparison to Andre Agassi.

World No 2 Patrick Rafter belted 13 aces and 53 winners in defeating the 41st-ranked Courier, who won a pair of five-setters, including the fifth-match clincher, to lift the Americans over Britain in the first round at Birmingham.

That inspirational triumph is what motivated Sampras to return to Davis Cup play — and also to insist he play only doubles so as not to take a singles place so well-earned by Courier and Martin.

The Australian sweep put a damper on home crowd cheering at this centennial celebration tie.

The celebration, marking the anniversary of the first Davis Cup competition between teams from the USA and Britain at Longwood in 1900, was launched with fireworks after a flag- carrying ceremony on centre court in the cosy, 5,342-seat stadium.

But Hewitt provided the rest of the fireworks during the early afternoon hours on a steamy day in which the on-court temperature was measured at 111 degrees F. With his short, thick blond pony tail flapping behind him, Hewitt used his flair and fitness to exploit his plodding opponent.

France, Brazil 1-1

PAU (France): Cedric Pioline crushed Fernando Meligeni 6-3 6-3 6-3 to put France level 1-1 with Brazil after the opening singles of their Davis Cup world group quarterfinal.

Gustavo Kuerten had given Brazil the lead when he overcame cramps to beat Davis Cup debutant Sebastien Grosjean 6-2, 6-7, 7-6, 6-7, 9-7.

The Brazilians will decide at the last minute today whether to play Kuerten alongside Jaime Oncins in the doubles against Fabrice Santoro and Olivier Delaitre as planned or rest him for Sunday’s reverse singles.

Pioline, who helped France win the trophy in 1996, took less than two hours yesterday to beat French Open semifinalist Meligeni, a clay-court specialist.

On the fast synthetic surface of the pau Sports Hall, Pioline — ranked five places above Meligeni at number 25 — exacted revenge for two defeats to the Brazilian on clay earlier in the season.

Such was Pioline’s dominance that the Frenchman never once allowed Meligeni a break ball.

The opening singles, in contrast, was an epic match lasting four hours and 42 minutes in which former French Open champion Kuerten had to fight all the way after comfortably winning the first set.

Kuerten, who showed he could play on fast surfaces by reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals two weeks ago, encountered strong resistance in world No 34 Grosjean through a draining battle in a highly-charged atmosphere.

Having shared tie-break wins in the next two sets, Kuerten appeared to struggle to stay in the match, requiring stretching exercises at every change of end as he was troubled by cramp in his legs and right arm.

But the former French Open champion pulled out some of his best shots when he really needed them, notably a superb drop at the net when he broke back in the 14th game of the deciding set as Grosjean served for the match.

Russia lead 2-0

MOSCOW: Russia took a 2-0 lead over Slovakia in their Davis Cup world group quarterfinal tie today when Marat Safin came from a set down to beat Karol Kucera 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 and then Yevgeny Kafelnikov beat Dominik Hrbaty 2-6, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5.

Kucera, Slovakia’s top player, who is ranked 13 in the world, started powerfully, breaking 37th-ranked Safin twice to take the opener 6-2 in just 25 minutes.

But the big Russian fought back with his serve and a solid game from the baseline. He took advantage of some sloppy shots by Kucera in the ninth game of the second set to edge 5-4 ahead and held on to level the match at one set apiece.

After trailing Kucera 2-0 in the third, Safin reeled off six straight games, to take control of the match.

Kucera again took an early lead in the fourth set, 3-0 and 4-1, but the 19-year-old Russian refused to be rattled and, cheered on by a partisan 5,000-strong home crowd, broke back and went on to win the match in two hours and 10 minutes.

Hrbaty threatened to leave the court after his brother was attacked in the stands by a Russian fan during his match against Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Slovak captain Miloslav Mecir said his team was considering filing an official complaint with the ITF, the world governing body for tennis, over the incident.

Hrbaty (21) said that his brother George (19) was beating drums to encourage him during the match when he was attacked yesterday by a spectator.

The match was interrupted for several minutes in the third set before security officials escorted the Russian from the arena.

Kafelnikov went on to win and give Russia a 2-0 lead after the first day’s play,

There had already been trouble before the tie when Russian captain Shamil Tarpishchev said he was considering lodging a complaint against a Swedish company which, he said, had supplied sand with high levels of radioactivity for the court in Moscow. The Swedish company was quoted as saying the sand was not dangerous.

Belgium lead 1-0

BRUSSELS: Unfancied Belgium made a dream start to their Davis Cup world group quarterfinal against Switzerland on Friday as 18-year-old Xavier Malisse earned a straight-sets victory against Lorenzo Manta in the opening match.

Belgium’s rising star Malisse took just two hours to win 6-4, 6-0, 7-6 over Manta, who reached the Wimbledon fourth round last month after beating former champion Richard Krajicek.

Malisse won the third set tie-break 7-1 after the Swiss served three double faults.

Belgium, who have never reached the semifinals of the Davis Cup, lost 5-0 to the Swiss the last time the two sides met, in 1987.

Greece lead 2-0

LOME: Greece took a 2-0 lead over Togo in the opening singles of their Davis Cup Euro-Africa zone group two second round tie played yesterday.

Jean Komi Loglo (Togo) lost to Papas Solon 7-5, 3-6, 6-7 (5-7), 3-6 and Gerad Loglo (Togo) lost to Taso Vasiliadis 4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 2-6.Top

UT to host three disciplines
By Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, July 17 — The Governor of Punjab and the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, Lt- Gen B.K.N. Chhibber (retd), has assured all help to the Punjab Olympic Association (POA) for the successful conduct of the National Games, scheduled to be held in Punjab and Chandigarh next year.

The 2000 National Games will see competitions in 25 disciplines, with Ludhiana hosting nine events, Jalandhar seven, Patiala six while three disciplines — golf, rowing and shooting — are scheduled to be held in Chandigarh.

General Chhibber, speaking on behalf of the Chandigarh Administration said all possible help would be extended to the POA for the successful conduct of the three events. While Punjab has no facility for water sport the state has no good shooting venue. A site has been identified near Chandigarh for a possible shooting range. It is still in the drawing board stage. Similarly, Punjab does have a couple of golf courses in the state. The facilities available at the Chandigarh Golf Club are really world class.

At today’s meeting between the functionaries of the Punjab Olympic Association and General Chhibber, the Chandigarh Sports Department officials were directed to make available suitable office accommodation to the POA at the Sector 42 sports complex. The office complex is likely to be handed over to the POA in the near future. Once that is done the POA will open a regular office there for better coordination of the National Games.

Earlier yesterday, a delegation of the Punjab Olympic Association had met the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal. It was decided at the meeting that the President of the POA, Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, would constitute the organising committee, the working committee and the various sub-committees for the successful conduct of the games, which have been allotted to the state since Punjab is celebrating the tercentenary of the birth of the Khalsa this year. The state was earlier allotted the 1989 National Games. But the event could not be held due to the growing militancy during that period.

As already decided, the Governor of Punjab will be the patron-in-chief of the organising committee while the Chief Minister will be the chairman of the committee. The other members of the various committee will be decided in consultation with the President and Secretary-General of the POA, the Punjab Sports Minister and the Chief Secretary of the Government of Punjab.

It was decided at the meeting that a final decision as regards the various venues, financial back-up for infrastructure, allocation of funds etc would be taken after the final report of the “joint survey team” and the draft “action plan” are submitted to the government.

The meeting also decided that provision for an indoor stadium, a shooting range and floodlighting of the main stadium at Ludhiana would be suitably incorporated in the report to be submitted by the “joint survey team”. The meeting also discussed in depth the issue of constituting two sub-committees — infrastructure committee and equipment committee. Representatives of the Punjab Olympic Association and the state sports associations would be associated in these committees.

For the conduct of the three disciplines in Chandigarh a “regional committee” would be constituted under the chairmanship of the Adviser . This committee will finalise all details for the conduct of the competitions to be held in the Union Territory.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University has volunteered to make available the newly built air-conditioned badminton hall of international standard and the hostel accommodation in the university campus for the games. Similarly, the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) has offered to host the tennis event. No decision has yet been taken on both offers.Top
