GURDASPUR
Arrested:
The police has arrested Ramesh Chander and seized 150 litres of kerosene meant for sale at fair price shops. Ramesh Chander, a ration depot holder at Sujanpur, was accused of selling kerosene at excessive rates to shopkeepers. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, a case under Section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act, has been registered.

MALERKOTLA
Eye camp:
A free eye operation camp will be organised by the Sohrab group of companies here on January 31. Dr M.S. Bhatia will perform operations and medicines will be given free of cost to patients.

NAWANSHAHR
Gang busted:
The police here has busted a gang of robbers and recovered stolen goods, including a car, two scooters, five agricultural motors and 500 gm charas from them. Six persons — Jasbir Singh, alias Rana, Nanak Singh, alias Sukha, Amandip Kumar, alias Happy, Harvinder Singh, Bikram and Balwant Singh alias Ranga — have been arrested.

Honoured: Dr Surinder Mohan Singh Sidhu, District Family Welfare officer, honoured members of the local Doaba Social Welfare Society for their contribution in the pulse polio drive, here at a function on Monday. The society had undertaken the responsibility of administering polio drops to the children of brick-kiln workers in the district, Mr Vasdev Pardesi, general secretary of the society, said in a press note.top

AMBALA
Road construction:
The Haryana State Agriculture Marketing Board will spend Rs 71.83 lakh on road construction in the cantonment area. This was stated by the local MLA, Mr Anil Vij, here on Monday. He said a total length of 26 km of roads would be built or repaired. He appealed to the people to get water pipelines laid where required before roads were laid to avoid damage to the newly carpeted roads.

BHIWANI
Demonstration:
The Jan Sangathan Manch here has expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation and has decided to stage a demonstration outside the Haryana Vidhan Sabha on February 3. The manch has demanded a ban on communal organisations like the Shiv Sena.

REWARI
Murdered:
Baba Azad Nath, presiding saint of the temple at Asalwas village, 10 km from here, was shot dead by an unidentified youth outside the temple on Sunday. The Bawal police has registered a case in this connection.

BILASPUR
Visited:
The Himachal Industries Minister and Minister in charge of the Fisheries Department, Mr Kishorilal Vaidya, visited Asia's largest fish hatching farm at Deoli on Sunday evening. He also inspected the training centre being run by the State Fisheries Directorate. He said training should be oriented in such a way as to provide maximum opportunity for self-employment to the youths of the state.

JAWALAMUKHI
Criticised:
A former president of the Block Youth Congress, Mr Parveen Sharma, has criticised the BJP government for continuous and organised attack on Christians. He said Christians constituted 1 per cent of the total population of the country and their services in the fields of education and health were well organised.
