ABOHAR
Suicide: The Kisan Sabha at its tehsil-level convention here on Thursday expressed concern over the suicide by farmers due to their inability to repay bank loans. The sabha resolved to start a "Karza Mukti Sangharsh" in February for farmers.

Vulgar films: Resentment prevails among residents here over the increasing tendency of cinema owners to screen vulgar films. They also expressed concern over the pasting of obscene posters outside educational institutions, hostels and chowks.

Appointed: Dr Suresh Kumar Sharma took over the charge as the new Senior Medical Officer of the local Civil Hospital on Friday in place of Dr Jagir Singh who was transferred to Kahnuwan in the same capacity.

KAPURTHALA
Action sought: The district police chief, Mr Iqbal Singh, has approached the Assistant Inspector-General, General Railway Police (GRP) Haryana, for taking stringent action against the GRP men who allegedly harassed to Karnail Singh Thind and his father, Resham Singh, both of Mallian village, by snatching £ 100 from them while travelling in Pashchim Express from Delhi to Jalandhar. A case has been registered.

NAWANSHAHR
Funds released: Dr Upinderjit Kaur, Technical Education and Industrial Training Minister, while presiding over a meeting of the board said for the current financial year Rs 5.35 crore had been released for development purposes. She also distributed Rs 40 lakh to panchayats and other beneficiaries for various development and welfare schemes at Baradari Club.

Rotary Club: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Rotary Club: President — Mr Rajnish Jain; and Secretary -- Mr Vinod Arora.

Appointed: Capt Amarinder Singh, President, PPCC, has appointed Mr Jagmohan Singh Saini as General Secretary, PPCC, legal cell, here on Friday.

Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Taxation Bar Association here: President — Mr P.N. Jain; Vice-Presidents — Mr K.K. Singla and Mr Shashi Bhushan Gupta; General Secretary — Mr Amrik Singh Juneja; and Secretary — Mr Adish Bajaj.

Died: Inder Dhir Singh Grewal, a former vice-principal of the local Yadvindra Public School died on Wednesday following a massive heart attack. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Play: The North Zone Cultural Centre here has decided to sponsor two shows of "Salvaan", a Punjabi musical play written by prof Ajmer Singh Aulakh and produced by the National Theatre Arts Society. The play would be performed again at Shimla in February, he added.

PATHANKOT
Road inaugurated: The Gurj Division on Friday dedicated one of the main roads of Maon Cantonment to late Capt Arun Jasrotia, Ashok Chakra winner. It was inaugurated by his father Lt Col P.S. Jasrotia (retd). Capt Arun Jasrotia, of 9 Para Commando had laid down his life while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior citizens: The Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association has decided to observe the New Year by offering a number of services to senior citizens. In a press note issued here today, Mr R.P. Puri, the media secretary of the association said the services to be offered included free medicare, sick attendance and help to pensioners.top

AMBALA
Booked: Surinder, Suman and four others have been booked by the Naraingarh police under Sections 323, 334, 342, 406 and 120-B, IPC, on a complaint lodged by Mr Bharat Bhushan Tandon of Naraingarh. Mr Tandon alleged that he was kidnapped by the suspects and was asked to pay ransom.

KURUKSHETRA
Survey: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Alok Nigam, said it would not be feasible to get a survey conducted for preparing new lists of yellow ration cards afresh at this stage. However, in addition to making random sampling of the beneficiaries to verify the veracity of the complaints, the cases were being verified individually by the district administration, he added.

Case registered: The police has registered a case under Section 407, 420, 467, 468 and 471, IPC, against Rajesh Kumar, a trolley driver and a resident of Chamarian village, Rohtak district, for allegedly not delivering 622 rice bags worth rupees 3.25 lakh at Kandhla harbour. The driver has absconded.

Arrested: The police here has succeeded in arresting Israr Ahmad of Mohalla Khalapur, Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh. Israr Ahmad is said to be a ring leader of an inter-state gang of cattle lifters operating in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Annual function: The annual function of Baba Maan Singh Gian Deep School was held in Pehowa on Thursday. Dr M.L. Ranga, Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University was the chief guest. The Director of BARC, Dr S.K. Sikka, was the distinguished guest on the occasion.

SIRSA
Yoga competition: Vijay Luxmi of S.S. Jain Girls School and Gautam Makkar of Bharat Sainik School have won bronze medals at the 13th National Yoga Championship held in Bijnore. Sirsa was placed second in the medal tally.

Clubs formed: Kisan clubs formed by the local cooperative bank have been inaugurated at Jamal and Rori in the district and are being sponsored by NABARD. The members acquainted the officers with the problem being faced by farmers.

Arrested: The police has arrested Ram Dutt Dhiman, a leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, in connection with the alleged murder of his relative, Howa Singh of Gohana town, on December 22.

Women's cell: A new women's cell has been inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Dr Avtar Singh. He also inaugurated a special telephone line that will exclusively receive complaints of atrocities against women. The special telephone number 103 will be in service from 9 a.m daily.

SONEPAT
Murder case: The Ganaur police on Friday claimed to have solved the murder case of Zile Singh, a sarpanch of Gorhi Jhinjera village and arrested one person of the same village in this connection. The Superintendent of Police, told mediapersons here today that the two other suspects have absconded.

Protest: Farmers of several villages fed by Rajpura distributary, 2-R Rajpura minor, 1-R Rajpura minor, Sardhana distributary and Shekhpura minor on Thursday protested against the non-supply of canal water to their fields despite repeated representations made to the authorities concerned.

Raids: The food staff of the Health Department headed by a Medical Officer conducted raids on Wednesday at a number of shops in Kharkhauda town and seized samples of various foodstuffs.

Inauguration: Mr Jagbir Singh Malik, Minister of State for Horticulture, inaugurated a newly built room at Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Khanpur Kalan village, 30 km from here, on Wednesday. The Minister also distributed woollen sweaters among girl students of the school.

YAMUNANAGR
Body found: The body of a 20-year-old student was found in a field on Thursday who had been missing since December 20. According to information, the body had been identified as that of Pravesh Kumar, a student of ITI here. A case under Section 302, IPC has been registered.
