Seven killed in Pak clashes
ISLAMABAD, Jan 2 (PTI) — At least seven persons were killed and many others injured in an exchange of fire between rival sects in the tribal areas of Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) near the Afghan border, reports said today. Trouble erupted on Thursday when a person belonging to the Shia village of Kachai was made hostage by a resident of Sunni village of Sheikhan prompting the former to retaliate with heavy weaponry.

Dilip Kumar stable
MUMBAI, Jan 2 (UNI) — Thespian Dilip Kumar, who underwent a five hour by-pass surgery at Lilavati Hospital yesterday, is reported to be in a stable condition. Dr Ashwin Mehta, one of the four doctors who conducted the operation, said that Kumar's six arteries were operated for by-pass where there was no blood transfusion. The blood which was released during the operation was saved and injected back into the celebrity's body.

CPI leader dead
NEW DELHI, Jan 2 (PTI) — CPI leader and women's activist Vimla Farooqi passed away here this morning after a heart attack. She was 75. Farooqi, one of the founder members of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, party sources said.

Eleven hurt
CALCUTTA, Jan 2 (PTI) — Eleven persons were injured, three of them seriously, when five rear bogies of the Howrah-Bokaro passenger derailed between Salboni and Chandrakona stations on South Eastern railway's Adra section early today. The injured were admitted to Chandrakona Civil Hospital near Kharagpur, railway sources said.

21 peacocks killed
GWALIOR, Jan 2 (PTI) — At least 21 peacocks were killed in the jungles of Mahraoli under Banmore police station in Madhya Pradesh on the eve of New Year and their meat supplied to some hotels here. This was revealed by Ramesh Bedia, who was arrested from Reshampura village of Purani Chhavani police station in the district yesterday in connection with the killing of the peacocks, the police said.

Military courts
KARACHI, Jan 2 (AFP) — Seven activists from the ethnic Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), including three provincial deputies, will be tried by Pakistan military courts on murder charges, officials said today. They will be the first MQM activists to face trial by military courts since the government introduced the tribunals early last month in a crackdown on terrorism and violence in Karachi.Top
