Angry circus elephant attacks
mahout PANIPAT, Nov 30 For 50-year-old mahout Hanif, it was an ordeal whose memory will haunt him for a long time. An old hand with the Amar Circus Company, Hanif had many elephants dancing to his tune for years until yesterday when a 10-year-old baby elephant, Tipu, left him with a fractured right leg and a badly bruised ribcage. "Tipu had just finished the Shiva Lingam pooja sequence when he suddenly went wild. The racing elephant lifted me in his trunk and smashed me on the ground," said a dazed Hanif who has been admitted to a private hospital. Fortunately for Hanif, his colleagues managed to get the angry elephant chained before he could do further damage. The elephant, calmed down after a tank full of water was sprayed on him. An assistant with the Amar Circus, Wilson, told TNS that Tipu was probably angry over something and took on the mahout in a fit of anger. "When an elephant gets angry he can attack even the man who looks after him", he explained. The incident sparked panic amongst the spectators and many rushed out. Today, the
naughty Tipu with his legs in chains remained
the main attraction at the circus, even though he will be
kept out of the performing arena for a couple of days. |

Addressing a convention of the Khet Mazdoor Women Union here yesterday. Ms Jagmat Sangwan, general secretary of the state unit of the AIDWA, said it was ironical that while the whole world was moving to the next millennium. women in India were still not being treated as equals to men. She bemoaned the fact that even after 52 years of Independence customs like "sati" were still prevalent in the society. Ms Sangwan criticised the Vajpayee government and alleged that due to the wrong and pro-capitalist policies of the Centre, the condition of the farm labourers and the poor had become pathetic. She alleged that the government was least interested in the welfare of the poor and the women. She said the government had failed to provide even community toilets for women. The AIDWA leader alleged that thousands of tonnes of wheat was damaged in the government godowns every year but the government failed to distribute it among the poor through public distribution system (PDS). She said crime against women were on the rise. She also decried the role played by the electronic media in encouraging obscenity and urged the government to take steps to put curbs on the media. The incidents of denial of wages to the labourers, keeping bonded labourers and sexual exploitation of the women farm workers was on the rise. Earlier, inaugurating the convention, Mr Ram Kumar Bahbalpuria, president of the state unit of the Akhil Bhartiya Khet Mazdoor Union, alleged that due to the economic policies of the Centre financial status of the poor was deteriorating while the rich were thriving at their expense. The convention adopted a
resolution demanding the framing of Central laws for farm
labourers, fresh survey of people living below the
poverty line supply of essential commodities at
subsidised rates and jobs for the unemployed. The
convention concluded with the speech of Ms Bimla
