Eye camp: The Vivek Mission Charitable
Trust will organise a free eye camp on December
11 and 12 at Shaheed Niab Singh Vivek Eye
Hospital, Jalal, about 50 km from here. According
to Mr Baldev Singh, Secretary of the trust,
medicines and spectacles will be given free of
cost to the patients.
FAZILKA
Killed: Gurdip Singh Brar (45),
Inspector, Food and Supplies, posted at Mandi
Arniwala, 22 km from here, was killed in a road
accident on Monday evening while three others
were injured. It is learnt that Brar and Parladh
Singh (50), a watchman with the department, were
coming here in a car. A tractor from the opposite
direction collided with the car, resulting in
serious injuries to Brar who died on the way to
the local Civil Hospital.
FEROZEPORE
Felicitation: A function was held
at the DCM complex here on Tuesday to felicitate
Mr Anirudh Gupta, Administrator-cum-Coordinator
of the DCM group of schools. Mr Gupta was
presented the National Educational Excellence
Award by the Union Minister of State for Defence,
Mr Bachi Singh Rawat, in New Delhi on November
25.
HOSHIARPUR
Youth festival: A three-day Zonal
Youth Festival of Panjab University was
inaugurated by Mr Kamal Chaudhary, former MP, at
DAV college here on Monday. According to Dr R.P
Bhardwaj, Principal of the college, 300 students
of nine colleges of the zone are participating in
the festival. Mr I.S. Dhillon, Director, Youth
Welfare, Panjab University, presided over the
opening session of the festival.
JALANDHAR
Protest: To protest against an incident
of "misbehaviour" by a police officer
with a local journalist and to press for the
suspension of the former, reporters based here
have decided to hold a dharna in front of the
office of the Senior Superintendent of Police on
December 1. The police authorities have already
transferred the SHO, allegedly involved in the
incident, to the Police Lines, but the local
media has been demanding his suspension.
LUDHIANA
Invited: Dr K.S Aulakh,
Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural
University, has been invited to participate in
the Internal Programme Review and Planning
Workshop 1999 of the Asian Vegetable Research and
Development Centre (AVRDC), scheduled to be held
at Shanhuaa in Taiwan from December 1 to 3. The
workshop will deliberate on reviewing the
findings and ongoing plans of the current AVRDC
programmes and will discuss research strategies
in the new millennium.
ICAR
book: The Indian Council of Agricultural
Research (ICAR) is publishing a book by compiling
the success stories of different progressive
farmers throughout the country. This was stated
here on Monday by Dr P. Dass, Deputy
Director-General (Extension Education), ICAR. The
Communication Centre of the PAU will contribute
the success stories of Punjabi farmers for the
book.
MOGA
Losses: Vegetable growers in the
district this year have suffered heavy losses due
to what they describe as "lowest
prices" of their crops available in the
market. A deputation of vegetable growers of the
district, led by Mr Swaran Singh, said the best
quality of cauliflower sold in the market at Rs
70 a quintal, whereas its retail rate was Rs 2
per kg. Similar was the case with several other
vegetables.
NAWANSHAHR
Concluded: The local Health Department
organised a dental health care fortnight from
November 15 to 29. The Civil Surgeon, Dr Surinder
Kaur, presided over the concluding day function
here on Monday. She distributed 175 dentures free
of cost among the needy patients, according to an
official press note.
Medical
camp: The local Rotary Club organised a
medical camp here at Jain Sewing Training School
on Sunday. As many as 260 children were given
hepatitis-B vaccination at the camp, according to
Mr Vinod Kumar, Secretary of the club.
Conference:
A district-level delegates' conference
of the Democratic Youth Federation of India
(DYFI) was organised at the nearby Rakkaran Dhan
village on Sunday. It was inaugurated by Mr
Santokh Gill, Joint Secretary, and presided over
by Mr Sukhwinder Singh Sekhon, President of the
state unit of the DYFI, respectively. As many as
73 delegates and 15 invitees participated in the
conference at which resolutions to mobilise the
youth to wage a war against social evils like
dowry, drug-addiction and corruption were
adopted.
PATIALA
Adult education camp: About 50 women
attended a three-month long free adult education
camp organised by the local mid-town Rotary Club.
The concluding function of the camp was presided
over by Ms Parneet Kaur, MP. Stating this,
Secretary of the club, Mr O P Gupta, said adult
education camps had become an annual feature.
Medical
camp: The Dedicated Brothers Group
organised the 132nd special check-up-cum-free
medicines distribution camp at Mohala village in
Sangrur on Sunday under the presidentship of Dr
Rakesh Vermi. Specialists examined 365 patients
at the camp. S. Darshan Singh Deepak, Branch
Manager, State Bank of Patiala, Amargarh Branch,
was the chief guest.
PHILLAUR
Land sold: A piece of 1.79 acres
of land of the Canal Department was sold on
Monday at the rate of Rs 1 crore 31 lakh per acre
at Rurrka Khurd village in the subdivision. The
SDM, Mr Prem Chand, informed that the department
collected Rs 2,34,49000 against the sale of the
land.
Inaugurated:
A two-day course on "Departmental
Inquiries and Proceedings" was inaugurated
on Monday by Mr S S Bains, IGP (retired), at the
Punjab Police Academy here. As many as 25 NGOs
from various towns participated in the course. In
his inaugural address, Mr Bains said police
officers should acquaint themselves with the
latest laws and rulings of the courts related to
departmental inquiries.
SAMRALA
Newspaper launched: A new weekly Punjabi
newspaper Hosh was released here on Sunday,
according to its Editor, Dr Sohan Lal Balagan. Mr
Balagan said the paper would represent,
especially, the Scheduled Castes and backward
classes.
Competition:
A 'dastar bandi' competition of school-going
children was held here on Monday at the local
Nankana Sahib School to mark the birthday
celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev. Ms Kuldeep Kaur,
Principal of the school, said the prizes were
given by Jathedar Kirpal Singh Khirnian, member,
SGPC.
Social
worker dead: Mr Sher Singh Dhillon, a
social worker and a big landlord of the city,
died here on Monday on the eve of the marriage of
his son, Bably. Prominent residents of the city
attended his funeral.
