Campus beat
Strike over denial of admission
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 10 — Activists of the Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) today observed a strike and staged a dharna outside the law department to protest against the decision of the university not to allow admission to those students who did not clear five out of ten papers in the first year.

While Deepinder Singh, a SOPU activist, sat on an indefinite hunger strike, students boycotted classes. The matter was resolved by noon by the timely intervention of the Dean Student Welfare and Chairman, Department of Laws, Mr V.K. Bansal, who agreed to accept their demand.

He specified that since the rule was passed in April, 1999, it would be implemented from this session and not in retrospect. He said the new rule was mentioned in the handbook of information. Following this, the strike ended and students paid the admission fee.

The president of Panjab University Students Union (PUSU), Lakhjeet Singh, had also, in a memorandum submitted to the DUI, stated that the students of LLB part I should be allowed to take admission in LLB part II.

He pointed out that the rule concerning the stipulated condition of clearing five out of the ten papers was passed by the syndicate on April 28, 1999, but students of first semester had already appeared for the first semester by this time. Hence it should be implemented from the new session.

The NSUI president, H.S. Lucky, and chairman of HSA, Chand Singh Madan, also supported their cause.

Resentment: Resentment prevailed among BCA first-year students over the non-declaration of results. This was causing delay in the admission to the next class.

They alleged that university authorities had failed to declare the results of 750 students even as they had declared the results of all other classes.

The Controller of Examinations, Dr Sodhi Ram, said results would be declared shortly.

Dharna: The activists of SOPU staged a dharna outide the office of the Vice-Chancellor for the sixth day today in support of the demands of the science students for provisional admissions to the next class.

Ms Reena Rai, academic secretary, SOPU, said they would intensify their agitation if the outcome of the meeting slated for tomorrow was not favourable. The PUSU planned to start an agitation if the demands of the students of honours school were not met.

Merit lists: The final merit lists for admission to MA I semester in the departments of ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology, economics, geography, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, public administration and sociology will be displayed in the respective departments on August 12.

In a release issued here today, Co-ordinator, Joint Admission Cell (Social Sciences), stated that in case of any problem the candidates should contact the complaint cell in the department or the office of the co-ordinator.

The candidates who are offered admission are required to deposit fee on August 13. The admission will take place in the Arts Block (second floor).

Hostel rooms: A delegation of the HSA, led by its chairman, Chand Singh Madan, today submitted a memorandum to the DSW urging him not to change the hostel allocation of old students of the university, since it would cause inconvenience to them.

The DSW, Mr V.K. Bansal, agreed not to disturb the old students in university hostels, who would be re-allocated the same rooms, and new students would be given rooms as per the allocation of various departments.Back
