BATHINDA
Theft:
A sum of Rs 28,288 was reportedly stolen from post office of "sangat mandi", 20 km from here, on Thursday. According to police sources, the theft came to notice when the complainant, Mr Roop Chand, found the locks of the office broken in the morning. A case had been registered.
Bar council: Mr Hardev Singh Grewal was elected President of the Bathinda Bar Council by defeating Mr Jatinder Rai Khattar. According to Mr Laxmi Narian Goyal, Mr Ramandeep Singh Cheema , Mr Gurtej Singh and Mr Sukhjinder Kaur were elected Vice-President, Secretary and Joint Secretary, respectively of the association.

GARHSHANKAR
Three commit suicide:
Tarsem Singh, his wife and Paramjit Kaur have allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in Beehram village of Garhshankar.
Students rescued:
Residents of the town provided timely help and averted a major tragedy when a Matador carrying school children from Fattepur Khurd village fell in the canal. The residents rescued the students.

HOSHIARPUR
One arrested:
Employees of the local branch of the Life Insurance Corporation of India caught Tarlochan Singh who was allegedly trying to fled away after stealing taps of the office. The Branch Manager said in a press note here on Saturday that five taps were recovered from his possession and handed over to the police.

JALANDHAR
Chemists’ plea:
The Punjab Chemists Association has demanded from the state government to withdraw the hike in tax on medicines. The President of the association, Mr R.D. Gupta, alleged here on Saturday that the hike in the tax from 6.6 to 8.8 per cent would affect the common man. The state chemists will observe a protest day on April 26 by wearing black badges.

PATHANKOT
Exhibition:
An art and craft exhibition was inaugurated by Mr N.S. Chawla, Chief Engineer, Ranjit Sagar Dam, on Saturday. The exhibition was organised by the Dastkhat, a forum of art and craft promotion established in memory of noted artist Ashwani Mahajan. On the spot painting competition was also organised on the occasion.

PATIALA
Camp:
A free pollution check-up camp was organised by NSS volunteers of the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology on the campus on Saturday. The camp was organised by the Punjab Pollution Control Board, Patiala. Prof S.K. Sawhney, Dean (Resource Generation), inaugurated the camp.
School inaugurated:
The Auro Mirra Centre of Education, a play way school started by the Sri Aurobindo Society, was inaugurated by Municipal Commissioner Harkesh Singh Sidhu at Seva Singh Thikriwala Nagar here on Saturday. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Ram Murti Goel was also present on the occasion.

SAMRALA
One held:
The local police arrested Shamsher Singh of Bija village, near here, on Saturday for allegedly making forged driving licences, registration certificates of vehicles, school leaving certificates and bank copies. Mr Randev Singh Hundal, SSP, said the police had recovered three driving licences, one identity card, and one stamp of DTO, Ludhiana, from his possession.

Correction: Mr M.N. Shukla, Secretary of Parent Teacher Association of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, clarified on Sunday that tributes were paid to Dr Y.P. Chathley by Mrs Kurshinder Sharma, Patron-cum-Principal of the school, Mr M.K. Virmani, President of the PTA, and Mr Shukla himself at a condolence meeting organised on the school premises on Saturday.

SAS NAGAR
Medical camp:
A blood pressure and ECG camp was organised by the 300- Saala Khalsa Charitable Trust at Kambala village, near here, on Sunday. A number of patients were examined free of cost.

BHIWANI
Student killed:
Mr Virendra, a student of Government College, was killed on Sunday when a Haryana Roadways bus knocked him in front of his college on Saturday. After the accident students in protest blocked the Bhiwani-Hansi road for one hour.

ROHTAK
Woman dies of burns:
A woman was burnt to death and her three children, including two minor daughters, were injured in a fire incident at Bahdurgarh village on Thursday. According to police sources, the incident occurred at the house of Pale Ram at 2 a.m. Santosh (30), wife of Pale Ram, who got 90 per cent burns died at PGIMS on Saturday.

SONEPAT
Police station:
The Haryana Government has upgraded the women cell in the police department here into full-fledged and independent all-women police station. This was stated by Mr K. Selvraj, SSP, while inaugurating it on Friday. He said the main aim of the station was to check crimes against women.
Sammelan: The All Haryana Power Corporation Workers Union has urged the state government to accept their demands, including reinstatement of dismissed employees and nurses. This demand was raised in a sammelan of the union held here on Saturday. Later, the members elected its office-bearers of Sonepat unit: president — Mr Rajinder Rathi; Senior Vice-President — Mr Ram Mehar Sharma; Vice-Presidents — Mr Kanshi Ram and Mr Nafe Singh and Treasurer — Mr Jagdish Prasad Sharma.
Bar association meeting: A meeting of the bar associations of Haryana will be held here on April 27 to consider the demand for five day week in the judicial courts of the state on the pattern of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Mr Shyam Lal Tyagi, President of the District Bar Association said this here on Sunday.
Fire: Harvested wheat crop worth lakhs of rupees, lying in the fields, was destroyed in a fire at Mohana village, 19 km from here, on Friday. According to a report, the wheat belonged to Mr Sultan Singh, a farmer of Tihar Malik. The cause of the fire is not known.

Textbooks distributed: Mr Rajiv Jain, General Secretary of the Haryana Vikas Party, distributed textbooks among 35 poor students of various educational institutions at a function organised by the Haryana Sarvjatiya Vikas Manch here on Saturday. He lauded the welfare schemes of the manch and hoped that these would benefit the poor and weaker sections of society.

SIRSA
Surprise visit:
The Haryana Minister of State for Health and Animal Husbandry, Mr Vijender Kadiyan, made a surprise visit to the local Civil Hospital on Saturday and inspected the working of the hospital. He took serious view of the fact that a senior officer had not marked his attendance in the register for the last four days.
Compensation demanded:
Members of the Haryana Workers Union, Sirsa district, at a meeting held here on Saturday demanded a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for dependants of Rakesh Kumar, a bus conductor of Haryana Roadways, Panipat depot, who was murdered on April 14. The meeting was presided by Mr Gurbaksh Singh at local bus stand.
Water shortage:
Residents of the local Begu road, Kirti Nagar and its adjoining areas are facing an acute shortage of water. Mrs Raj Rani Jindal, chairperson, Dukhi Mahilla Sangh, alleged on Sunday that repeated complaints in this regard had yielded no results. She said in case the supply do not improve the sangh would launch an agitation.
