AMRITSAR

SHO transferred: Mr Major Singh, SHO, B division, was sent to the police lines for torturing a 32-year-old woman last month. He was transferred as a result of an inquiry report submitted by Mr Rajinder Dhoke, SP (Headquarters).
Pension distributed: The sub-regional office of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation on Tuesday observed the third anniversary of the Employees Pension Scheme, 1995, Mr R.K. Kukreja, Regional Provident Fund Commissioner, distributed pension among 105 pensioners under the scheme.
Invited: Dr J. Gargi, Professor and Head of the Forensic Medicine and Technology Department, Government Medical College, Amritsar has been invited to deliver the keynote address at the 15th meeting of the International Association of Forensic Sciences to be held at Los Angeles in the USA.
Protest: Employees of the Life Insurance Corporation and the General Insurance Corporation held a dharna here on Tuesday. They were protesting against the move to privatise the insurance industry.

FEROZEPORE

Medical camp: The State Bank of Patiala, cantonment branch, organised a free medical check-up camp for the inmates of the local Arya Orphanage, on its Foundation Day. Medicines and fruits were distributed among the inmates.

LUDHIANA

Dharna: Employees of the regional office of the Central Bank of India held a dharna on a call given by the All-India Central Bank Employees Congress in protest against the promotion policy of the management.
Appointed: Mr Harnam Das Johar, a former Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, has been appointed the Congress observer in Gwalior division of Madhya Pradesh for the forthcoming elections.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Law Students Association ( Punjabi University evening shift): President — Mr M.P. Singh; Vice-President — Mr P.M. Singh; General Secretary — Mr S. P.S. Sawhney; and Joint Secretary — Mr Sandeep Sharma.
Pensioners Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Pensioners Welfare Association: President — Mr H.S. Sodhi; Senior Vice-President — Mr B.S. Gautam; Vice-Presidents — Mr J.S. Bhatti, and Mr Shan Singh Gulati; General Secretary — Mr Mohinder Singh; and Finance and Office Secretary - Mr O.P. Grover.

SANGRUR

Lok Adalat: A permanent Lok Adalat will be held at court complex on November 21. Mr Justice H.S. Brar, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, will inaugurate the adalat.

TARN TARAN

Grants released: Mr Gurdev Singh Badal, Agriculture Minister, Punjab, has released a grant of Rs 10 lakh for different development works in the town and Rs 51,000 for the local Majha Rang Manch and Sabhyacharak Kendra.
Families honoured: Families of communists who were gunned down by terrorists during the days of militancy in Punjab were honoured on the concluding day of a two-day session of Amritsar district unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India held on Sunday at Bhikiwind.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Amritsar district unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India: President — Mr Major Singh Bhikhiwind; Secretary — Mr Pargat Singh Jamarai; and Treasurer - Mr Tirath Singh.

Painting contest: As many as 60 students participated in a painting competition organised by the State Bank of India at the Sector 30 Government High School here on Wednesday. Prizes and participation certificates were given away by the Chief Manager, Mr S.L. Soni.
Blood donation camp: As many as 175 volunteers donated blood at a camp organised by the NSS unit of the Government College for Girls, Sector 42, here on Wednesday. Dr Narinder Singh, in charge of the unit, and Prof Amar Singh were given certificates of appreciation by Dr V.K. Kak, Principal of Government Medical College, Sector 32.
Quiz contest: St Xavier's Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, won an inter-school quiz competition organised by Chandigarh State Library here on Wednesday. The team comprised Aman Behl, Vikas Mangla and Sahil Sahni.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Palsora unit of the Shiv Sena (Rashtravadi): block president — Mr Surendra Chaudhary; senior vice president — Mr Hari Shankar; general secretary — Mr Bhim Singh; and treasurer — Mr Om Parkash Verma.
Eye camp: The Lion Club Greater will organise a four day free eye camp at Karsan village from November 21, a press release of the club said on Wednesday.
Appointed: Mr Jasbir Singh Bir has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the Anandpur Sahib Foundation in place of Mr D.S. Jaspal, who has proceeded on a medical leave following an accident.

Cleanliness drive ends: A 10-day cleanliness campaign carried out by volunteers of the National Service Scheme(NSS) at Government Senior Secondary School, Barwala, concluded on Wednesday. Mr K.C. Wadhawan, Editor of Haryana Samvad, advised the students to develop a spirit of dedication and help in eradicating the social evil.top

AMBALA

One killed: Mr Dorzian, an army man, was killed when he was hit by a vehicle near the Kali Paltan bridge on G.T. Road in the cantonment on Monday. A case has been registered.
Dharna: Leaders of the Central Bank of India Employees Union, Haryana, held a dharna in front of the regional office of the bank in the Cantonment here on Tuesday. The dharna was to express resentment over the "draconian changes" made in the bank's promotion policy.

GURGAON

Sanctioned: National Agricultural Rural Development Bank has sanctioned a loan of Rs 46.5 crore for the Rewari Lift Irrigation Scheme , according to Mr Narain Singh, Technical Education Minister, Haryana. He said Mr Bansi Lal, Chief Minister, would lay the foundation stone of this scheme on December 6 at Brijpura village in Pataudi block.

HISAR

Prohibitory orders: The district administration has promulgated prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr P C in the district in view of the Vidhan Sabha elections in Delhi and Rajasthan. The order will remain in force till November 27, an official press release said here on Tuesday.
Celebrations:
33 Armoured division celebrated its 17th Raising Day somewhere in the western sector on Monday. The celebrations which were spread over three days included Bara, Khana, motor-cycle display and a cultural programme. The division rendered remarkable service during flood relief operations in Haryana in 1995.

Camp: As many as 1000 patients have been examined at a free TB and chest check-up camp organised by the Arya Samaj here.

YAMUNANAGAR

Charge taken: Mr Rajiv Sharma has taken charge as Deputy Commissioner of Yamunanagar.
Exhibition: Seth Jai Parkash Mukand Lal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Radaur organised 'Electronica-98' exhibition on the college campus on Tuesday. Dr K.L. Johar, Vice-Chairman of Seth Mukand Lal Jai Parkash Institutions, inaugurated the exhibition.
Dental course: DAV Centenary College, Yamunanagar, will start a post-graduate, Dental Surgery course in December, Mr J.N. Kapoor, General Secretary of the college, said on Tuesday.
Four arrested: The police has arrested four persons and seized 37 cows from them. The cows were being taken to Uttar Pradesh allegedly for slaughtering, Mr Sheel Madhur, SP said here on Tuesday. The police has registered a case.

BILASPUR

Elected: Mr Rajender Paul, a BJP candidate, was elected member of the Bilaspur Town Nagar Parishad in a byelection held here on Monday. He got 163 of the 472 votes.

CHAMBA

Development projects: The Himachal Government has earmarked a sum of Rs 17.48 crore under the Integrated Tribal Development Project, the Resident Commissioner at Bharmour, said on Tuesday. He said so far Rs 6 crore had been spent on the development of various schemes.
Postal envelope shortage: Three-rupee postal envelopes and one-rupee stamps are not available in the head post office at Chamba for many days. This has created resentment among residents. According to the local postal officials, they have written to the higher authorities in this connection.

HAMIRPUR

One arrested: The police has arrested Rajesh Kumar of Mota Nagar in Jalandhar city in connection with the sale of a stolen Maruti car to a resident of Nadaun Kaswa in this district, Mr Jagjit Kumar Gupta, SP, said here on Tuesday. He said another accomplice had also been identified.

JWALAMUKHI

One killed: Deshraj (21), a resident of Surani village, was killed on Monday when the truck in which he was travelling rolled down a gorge while on way from Khundian to Jwalamukhi. Five other passengers of the truck were injured. They were admitted to the local hospital.

NAHAN

Life imprisonment: Mr Rameshwar Sharma, District and Sessions Judge, Nahan, has awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 to Yash Paul of Panipat and Rajesh Kumar of Paonta Sahib for the murder of Shiv Kumar.
Death mourned: Several social organisations, including the Nahan Nagrik Sabha, on Tuesday mourned the death of Mr M.L. Handa, a former District Education Officer, Sirmour, who died recently after a brief illness.
