Khurasia, Kanitkar in century stand MUMBAI, Nov 18 (PTI) Left-handers Amay Khurasia and skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar struck half centuries and also featured in a century stand to rescue Board Presidents XI from a poor start on the opening day of their three-day match against the visiting West Indies "A" team here today. Khurasia made a strokeful 65, off 83 balls and studded with 7 fours and a six while Kanitkar, the more sedate partner in their 112-run fourth-wicket stand, scored 68 with eight fours. The duo batted well to pull the team out from a difficult 61 for three soon after lunch. The home team, who won the toss, ended the day at 252 for seven wickets off 90 overs with all their recognised batsmen gone. Harbhajan Singh, surprisingly in a belligerent mood while making a quickfire 27 with five fours, and Rahul Sanghvi (9) were at the crease at stumps. Earlier, the West Indians
got rid off openers Jitender Singh (7) and Nikhil
Haldipur (29) after the duo had stood determinedly
against the pace attack of Reon King and left-arm Pedro
Collins to put on 31 runs for the first wicket. A post-lunch slump, when four batsmen (including Khurasia and Kanitkar) departed in the space of 21 overs, was followed by the unbroken eighth-wicket stand between Harbhajan and Sanghvi which took the total past the 250 mark. Khurasia and Kanitkar had held the visiting bowlers at bay for the major part of the post-lunch period, both were, however, not able to dominate the pace bowlers though they got on top of the spin attack with drives and pulls. Khurasia, the Madhya Pradesh player, was the more attractive of the two as he drove the spinners fluently to bring up his half century off only 56 balls. He also Smote McGarrell for a six over long on earlier. For the visitors, the early breakthroughs were provided by speedsters Collins (1 for 51) and Keith Semple (1 for 25) after a fiery opening spell by Reon King (0 for 22). Later leg spinner Rawl Lewis (3 for 70) and left-arm spinner Neil McGarrell (2 for 72) sliced through the middle-order in the post-tea session. Both King and Collins worked up good pace off the slow track to trouble all the batsmen. Collins was adept at bowling at the blockhole besides moving the ball both ways. Scoreboard |
McGrath keen to renew rivalry BRISBANE, Nov 18 (AFP) Australia are eager to call Englands bluff over opener Michael Atherton in the first test starting at the fast bowler-friendly Gabba Ground here on Friday. The former England captain, who had an injection to his lower back yesterday, was included in the 12-man squad for the Ashes opener. But the gamble could backfire when he faces an Australian pace attack led by Glenn McGrath, who dismissed Atherton seven times in six Tests in England last year. Seven of the nine times McGrath has taken Athertons wicket have been to bouncers and Athertons bad back restricts foot movement, which leaves him a sitting duck. McGrath said he was looking forward to finding out exactly how restricted Atherton was. "Ill probably loosen him up with a few short ones," McGrath said ominously. "If hes got a bit of a dodgy back then hes probably not getting under (short balls) as well as he would like to do," McGrath added after todays nets. "Ive quite a bit of success against Athers, last time he was captain as well as probably one of the linchpins in the team. If we can knock him over early it sets us up and puts us in a better position," he said. Such is Englands concern for its top order, seven specialist batsmen were named for the Ashes opener on a pitch with a healthy grass coverage likely to suit fast bowlers. And with Mark Butcher making only nine runs from five first class innings on tour, England had little option but to go with Atherton. John Crawley was also included in the squad despite being assaulted in Cairns last Sunday night. He suffered cuts and bruises to his face but was one of the seven batsmen named by England for the Test which will face battery of Australian fast bowlers. With no Shane Warne to bamboozle Englands batsman, Australia have gone for pace to take advantage of the Brisbane and Perth wickets in the first two tests. McGrath and the resurrected Jason Gillespie hope to emulate Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson who terrorised England 23 years ago. Gillespie, who got help from Lillee to remodel his action which had caused stress fractures to his lower back, looks like getting the nod over Michael Kasprowicz for the third fast bowlers spot behind McGrath and Damien Fleming. Captain Mark Taylor, who will be playing his 100th Test on Friday, is known to favour Gillespies raw pace and aggression and Kasprowicz said after todays nets he would not be surprised to be carrying the drinks on Friday. Gillespie claimed a career-best 7-37 at Headingley last year to set Australia up with a 2-1 series lead. England also chose a three-pronged pace attack headed by Darren Gough with support from Alan Mullally and seamer Angus Fraser while off-spinner Robert Croft got the nod over Peter such. Former England great Ian
Bothom warned Australia not to underestimate
Athertons fighting qualities. "Hes a
world class player and not many sides have got players of
that sort of quality," said Botham, who will
commentate on the series. |
India defeat Maldives, enter final COLOMBO, Nov 18 (UNI) India moved into the final of the four-nation Bristol Freedom Cup Football Tournament defeating the Maldives 2-1 in their second league match here yesterday. India, playing with a second string team in the absence of senior players who are with the national camp for the Bangkok Asian Games, led 2-0 at half-time with Karinkar Raj and striker Abbas Ali Rizvi hitting the target in style in the 20th and 22nd minutes. India could have celebrated a tennis score win had their captain C.V. Pappachan and Mohammad Shefeeq not muffed sitters one after another. The Maldives, who drew 2-2 with Sri Lanka earlier, scored their consolation goal through Mohammed Nazim in the last minute. India had put up a spirited performance to demolish Malaysia 3-1 in the opening match on Sunday despite training 0-1 at half-time. Fighting back in the second half India levelled the score through Pappachan. Stopper back A.S. Firosh gave India the much-needed lead 30 minutes later through a dipping header and Rizvi completed the tally in the last minutes with a dazzling solo run. Noel Wilson of India was declared the man of the match. Malaysia, hosts Sri Lanka, the Maldives and India are taking part in the Asian Football Confederation Tournament organised to mark the golden jubilee celebrations of Sri Lankas independence. The tournament carries a
cash prize of $ 10,000 and a gold cup. |
Good start by Amritinder CHANDIGARH, Nov 18 It was Amritinder Singh all the way. This 26-year-old local lad set the Chandigarh golf course greens afire when he shot a superb five under card of 67 to take a grand lead on the opening day of the Hero Golf Chandigarh Open here today. An Omega Asian PGA tour regular, Amritinder could not have asked for a better homecoming. His nearest rival was Shiv Prakash, current leader of the Order of Merit, who had a three under card of 69. Barring those under par cards, it was a bad day for the pros. Chiranjeev Milkha Singh, Calcutta's Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia, Sanjay Kumar and Bunty Randhawa finished joint third with a one-over card of 73. Veteran Rohtas Singh of Delhi and Lucknow's Jamman were in joint seventh spot at two-over 74. Back after a good week at the Thailand Open, where he played three consecutive three-under 69s during the last three rounds to finish ninth, Amritinder hit six birdies and conceded a single bogey when he had to chip out safely after his drive got plugged in a small hole in the right of the fairway on the fifth hole. This sole bogey came after he had scored a hat-trick of birdies in the second, third and fourth holes. Amritinder even came near to making the 16th hole putt into an eagle, but missed. Besides the hat-trick of birdies in the first nine, Amritinder shot birdies on the 10th, 16th and 18th holes. He could have made it seven birdies, but then he missed his chipputt from the left of the green on the 13th hole. This five-par hole proved unlucky for him. Amritinder later attributed his new-found form to the virtues of being patient. "I have been playing well this season, but one bad round always undid all the good work I did on the other three days. I used to get frustrated with bad shots. Now, I have become very patient. Even today, after making three successive birdies and following it up with a bad bogey on the fifth hole, I stayed calm. Also, I missed a certain birdie on the par-5 13th, but even that didn't get me excited and I was finally rewarded with birdies on the 16th and 18th," he said after the round. Shiv Parkash, winner of the Wills Southern Open and the McDowell's Centenary Cup this year, made a brilliant eagle on the ninth hole, when he hit a perfect second shot from 140 yards and the ball roller into the hold. After playing par on the first seven holes and making a bogey on the eight, where he three-putted from 20 yards, the eagle was just the right kind of motivation he was seeking. He then shot birdies on the 11th 13th and 14th, but missed a chip-putt from the edge of the green to finish with a bogey on the 18th hole. "I am quite happy with my performance as I did not have a practice round yesterday after arriving here late last night. I played cautiously today," he said later. The star attraction, Jeev Milkha Singh, had to take some medical attention after pulling a lower back muscle before he could start the round. But he refused to blame the injury for the poor score. "I was not at all focussed today. I made some silly mistakes, including missing some very small birdie putts," said Jeev who made four bogies and three birdies. Last season's player of the Year and winner of Mercedes Benz Open here, Vijay Kumar failed to come to terms with the tricky greens and finished three-over 75. Also finishing three-over 75 was the current Indian Open champion Feroz Ali, who has just returned to India after participating in the prestigious two-million dollar Gene Sarenzen Invitational in Atlanta, USA. Chandigarh's Amandeep Johl, who won a Lexus luxury car for hitting a hole-in-one during the Thailand Open last week, shot 75 after arriving for the tournament just moments before his tee-off time. Manav Das lead the amateur's field with a four-over 76 card. He was followed by Delhi's Jaideep Singh who was with a six-over 78, while Saurav Bahuguna was one stroke behind Jaiveer at third. Ex-cricketer and world record holder for maximum number of wickets in Test cricket, Kapil Dev, was in 10th position at 12-over 84. Scores (after 18 holes):

Hat trick hero Hurst knighted LONDON, Nov 18 (AFP) Englands 1966 World Cup final hattrick hero Geoff Hurst was knighted by the queen yesterday. Sir Geoff, 56, said the ceremony at Buckingham Palace had made a greater impact on him than scoring three goals in Englands 4-2 win over West Germany at Wimbley. "Now that I am older I probably cant cope with pressure so much any more," he said. "I didnt expect to be nervous, but when the day came I was, whereas 32 years ago, playing at Wimbley came like second nature to me." Sir Geoff, who was accompanied by his wife, Judith, and two of his daughters, Claire, 33, and Charlotte, 21, is the only footballer to score a hattrick in a World Cup final. "Receiving the
knighthood is a wonderful thing to happen and it was
almost like full circle today because it was the Queen
who presented the England team with the trophy at Wimbley
in 1966," he said. |

Nonita forges ahead NEW DELHI, Nov 18 Bringing into play her vast experience, nine-time national champion Nonita Lal Qureshi jumped to the leaderboard on the second day of the 31st Ladies Northern India Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course here today. Nonita displayed her steadiness in her strokes and fired a level par score of 72. This gave her an aggregate of 147. Chandigarhs Parnita Garewal, who was a stroke ahead of Nonita yesterday, could fire five over 77 (aggregate 151) and slipped to four strokes behind the leader. Shruti Khanna also shot five over 77 to have an aggregate of 153, two strokes behind Parnita and six behind the leader. Nonita was out in 36 and also in 36. She had three birdies as also three bogeys. She began badly bogeying on the 3rd and the 4th. But she soon recovered and get birdies on the next two to even out the score. In the back nine, she had a birdie on the 13th but ran into trouble on the next. This nullified her advantage. But she carded the best score of level par 72 to get into the drivers seat. With one bogey on the sixth, Parnita finished first nine one over 37. But in back nine, she dropped a stroke on the 13th. Then she lost her luck and got a triple bogey on the 15th. Despite this setback, she got a par score on the next three to get four over 40 and an aggregate of five over 77. Her two days total was 151. Both Nonita Qureshi and Parnita were not exactly happy with their overall display. They were both heard saying that they were capable of playing much better round than they did. WR, SER in final LUDHIANA, Nov 18 Western Railway, Mumbai, scraped past North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur, 1-0 and South Eastern Railway, Calcutta, prevailed over Punjab State Electricity Board, Patiala, 2-0 to set up a title clash on the penultimate day of the third All-India Mohinder Partap Singh Grewal Memorial Women's Hockey Tournament at the Punjab Agricultural University grounds here today. The first semifinal between Western Railway, Mumbai, and NER, Gorakhpur, began on a fast note with the ball moving from one end to another in which WR, Mumbai, had a marginal edge and earned three penalty corners in quick succession but each time full-back S. Toppo missed the target. The WR inner trio consisting of F. Bilung, S. Chanu and A. Keketta exhibited better understanding among themselves and repeatedly raided the NER territory but deep defenders of Gorakhpur gave much improved display today and gave no chance to the trio to click. WR women wasted another
penalty corner in the 24th minute when S. Toppo's shot
went inches wide. After the first barren half, WR played
with added vigour and their efforts bore fruit in the
52nd minute when outside left B.M. Geeta scored the
all-important goal. Trailing by one goal, NER eves went
all out to score the equaliser but their efforts were
thwarted by an agile WR goalkeeper Seema Lakra. |

Prasad fashions Karnataka win BANGALORE, Nov 18 (PTI) Medium pacer Venkatesh Prasad ripped through the Hyderabad batting order, scalping five wickets for a match haul of 9/92 as Karnataka scored an innings and three runs victory in their Ranji Trophy league match here today. Replying to Karnatakas first innings score of 458, Hyderabad, overnight 81 for three after being forced to follow on, were bundled out for 206 in their second innings, shortly after lunch on the final day of the four-day match. Prasad, who played a major part in Hyderabads dismissal for 249 in their first innings, was well supported by Dodda Ganesh (2/52) and Sunil Joshi (3/60) as the visitors could do little in the face of the high-class Karnataka attack. N.P. Singh waged a lone battle top scoring with 42 (43b 7x4, 1x6) and brought Hyderbad close to wiping out their first innings deficit, in the process adding 57 valuable runs for the ninth wicket with skipper Venkatapathy Raju (17 n.o). First innings hero Vishnuvardhan failed to click as he was sent back to pavilion for a poor 12 by Ganesh. N.P. Singh, dropped by Arun Kumar when on 27, was finally dismissed 11 minutes after lunch by Prasad. Brief scores: |
Innings defeat for Himachal ROHTAK, Nov 18 Himachal Pradesh suffered the ignominy of an innings defeat at the hands of Haryana in their Cooch Behar encounter which ended at Vishwakarma Stadium here today. The match concluded in the pre-lunch session itself as the spin duo of Ishan Ganda and Deepak Sain dismissed Himachal's remaining three batsmen for an addition of 25 runs only. Ishan accounted for the dismissal of overnight not out batsman Deepak Sharma (11) to finish with 4 for 47. Left arm spinner Deepak Sain who had spelled disaster for the visitors in the first innings by claiming 5 for 22 dismissed Ayub Khan and Ajay Partap Singh in his 22nd over to fold Himachal's second innings at 124. In the process Deepak returned with an impressive bowling analysis of 21.4-12-20-5. He took the tally of wickets from this match itself to double figures. The youngster was playing only his second match this season. For Himachal, defeat looked inevitable from the commencement of the third day's play today. After conceding a lead of 126 runs, Himachal batsmen never recovered. When play began today Himachal needed another 28 runs to avoid an innings defeat with 3 wickets in hand. Haryana gained eight points from this match. They now have 22 points from four matches. This season they have taken three points each against Punjab and Delhi and eight points each against Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir. |
