IT raids on 46 traders’ premises
MUMBAI, Nov 18 (PTI) — "Unaccounted" income of Rs 4.5 crore was unearthed and documents showing rigging of prices of onions and potatoes were recovered in simultaneous raids by income tax (IT) officials on vegetable traders in the metropolis and Navi Mumbai since yesterday, an IT official said here today. Offices and residential premises of 46 traders in Mumbai and Vashi were raided by 200 income tax officials and searches were still on, the official said.

OCEANSAT launch
AHMEDABAD, Nov 18 (UNI) — In a giant leap forward in space technology, India will put into orbit in March, 1999, an ambitious indigenously developed satellite, OCEANSAT (P-4), to scan the oceans around the country. Dr A.K.S. Gopalan, Director of the Space Applications Centre (SAC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), said in an interview here today that work on the satellite was nearing completion at Ahmedabad and Bangalore. Launch from the Sriharikota range has been scheduled for March next year. The launch of OCEANSAT would put India in the company of the USA, Japan and the European Union.

Plutonium bombs
ISLAMABAD, Nov 18 (DPA) — Pakistan, which has so far used uranium in nuclear technology, has also started producing plutonium in a move that could help it build hydrogen, plutonium and neutron bombs in future, a news report said today. Quoting unidentified experts, Islamabad daily The Nation said plutonium was being produced in a reactor at Joharabad in the Khushab district of central Pakistan. Pakistan would be the eighth country to produce plutonium.

Blind home case
NEW DELHI, Nov 18 (PTI) — The Delhi High Court today issued notices to the Lt-Governor of Delhi and the Director, Social Welfare of City Administration, to file replies as to why eviction order has been issued against inmates of a blind home here. A Division Bench of Mr Justice R.C. Lahoti and Mr Justice C.K. Mahajan asked the respondents to place details on the matter by February 2, the next date for hearing.

‘Kalank divas’
LUCKNOW, Nov 18 (PTI) — The Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh has decided to observe December 6, the day on which the Babri mosque was demolished in 1992, as ‘kalank divas’ (black day), party’s state unit chief Ram Saran Das said here today. Protest rallies and demonstrations would be held all over the state on the day, Das told newsmen. The party would hold its third state-level convention at Etawah from December 16, he added.

Narmada plea
NEW DELHI, Nov 18 (PTI) — The Union Government will inform the Supreme Court within two days whether it wants to withdraw its objection to the court dealing with a petition challenging the construction of the controversial Narmada dam. Former Attorney-General Ashok Desai, appearing for the government, submitted before a three-judge Bench, comprising Chief Justice A.S. Anand, Mr Justice S.P. Bharucha and Mr Justice B.N. Kirpal, that he would seek instruction within two days on the issue.

Lankan attack
COLOMBO, Nov 18 (AFP) — Sri Lankan naval vessels attacked a flotilla of Tamil rebel craft and sank three of them as 12 rebels were killed in ground battles, the Defence Ministry here said today. The naval action was off the north-eastern coast of Mullaitivu, the ministry said, adding that LTTE militants suffered heavy casualties. The ministry did not say if the navy also suffered losses.

Probe into dinner
HYDERABAD, Nov 18 (PTI) — The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, today demanded a CBI probe into last month’s venison dinner in Khammam district, where meat of protected wild animals was allegedly served. Dr Reddy accused the TDP Government of trying to dilute the "dinner scandal" by ordering only an inquiry by a senior IAS official. "Only a CBI inquiry will help facilitate an impartial probe," he told newsmen.

Order on Windows 98
SAN JOSE (California), Nov 18 (AFP) — A judge has ordered software giant Microsoft to alter its Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 4.0 software as a result of a legal challenge from rival Sun Microsystems. US District Judge Ronald Whyte, issuing a preliminary injunction, said that Microsoft had likely violated a contract with Sun by improperly using its Java language in the windows operating system. The judge granted Sun’s request for an injunction, ordering Microsoft to change the software to pass UN’s compatibility test within 90 days. Microsoft has 15 days in which to decide whether to appeal the decision handed down here on Tuesday or redesign the programmes.

WASHINGTON, Nov 18 (Reuters) — House Republicans today unanimously selected Louisiana’s Bob Livingston as their choice for next Speaker of the House, replacing Newt Gingrich who resigned after the November 3 elections, Representative Randy Cunnigham said.
