Rafting
A rafting expedition was flagged off on rivers Sutlej and Beas. The expedition is being conducted by an armoured regiment. The GOC flagged off the expedition at Phillaur and Col. N.S. Kapur, flagged off the Beas team at Sri-Hargobindpur. The two teams of three boats each will cover 100 km each on the two rivers in three days. The teams will join in at the finishing point at Harike.

FATEHGARH SAHIB

Urged
Members of the local Punjab Government Drivers and Technical Union at a meeting held here on Friday urged the government to release a pay scale of Rs 4,500 — Rs 7,200 for drivers.

FEROZEPORE

Case registered
The city police has registered a case under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the IPC against Vijay Kumari, wife of an inspector in Punsup, for allegedly killing her two-year-old son Deepak at Kirti Nagar on Thursday. The body of the child has not been traced so far.

GURDASPUR

Govt flayed
Mr Kashmir Singh Kang, president of the Punjab Mazdoor Dal, on Friday accused the SAD-BJP government of not protecting the interests of workers. He said the minimum wages of unskilled and skilled workers should be fixed at Rs 3,500 and Rs 7,000 per month, respectively.

Sentenced
Mr R.M. Gupta, District Sessions Judge, has sentenced six persons to life imprisonment under Section 302, IPC, for murdering two persons at Babowal Chhania village, the Public Prosecutor said here on Saturday

Members of the Lions Club (Service) planted saplings on the premises of Government Randhir School, and along the Nurpur and Dhaunkhe village roads during the vanamahotsava celebrations.
Kirtan darbar

The International Kirtan Council, a religious organisation, will organise a kirtan darbar in connection with the celebrations of the 300th birth of the Khalsa Panth at the state gurdwara here on September, 11, according to Mr H.S. Bhatia, secretary of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha.

According to the general secretary of the Punjab State Market Committees Employees Union, Mr Rachhpal Singh, the union has decided to organise a state-level rally and demonstration at Chandigarh on September 3, in front of the office of the Punjab Mandikaran Board in support of its demands

Saplings planted
The local Rotary Club organised a sapling plantation camp at Niyamatpur village on Friday. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Satish Vohra, president of the club. As many as 500 saplings were planted.

Form shortage
The shortage of 'C' forms at the local Sales Tax office has caused resentment among businessmen. Sources revealed that only 300 forms had been received whereas 3000 persons were registered with the office.

The Phagwara Environment Association organised a "chetna" rally and vanamahotsava on Friday. Mr Mohan Lal, Minister of Forests, Punjab, said on the occasion-2 crore saplings would be planted in the state in the next two months and various afforestation schemes would be introduced under a Japanese-aided project.top

The Chandigarh Housing Board Sectional Officers Union has hailed the decision of the Punjab Urban Development Authority to promote 14 officers who had not been promoted for the past 22 to 24 years.
Saplings planted

As many as 200 saplings of different species of trees were planted during a tree plantation function held at Government Model Senior School in Sector 23 here on Saturday. Mr D.S. Mangat, Under Secretary (Education), UT' was the chief guest. Mr Ram Kumar, Principal of the school, highlighted achievements of the school. The local police claims to have busted a gang involved in manufacturing illicit liquor. the police raided a house at Wadhwa Ram colony and arrested three persons.

The police has arrested Manoj a resident of Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, and seized 38 kg poppy husk from him.

Inaugurated
The Health and Family Welfare Minister, Mr Jagat Prakash Nadda, has announced that the state government will spend Rs 7 crore on the construction of roads, buildings and bridges here this year. He said this after inaugurating the Kuddi-Salanu-Bharathu link road at Kuddi.
Essay contest
The Yuvak Mandal, Jabbali, is organising an essay-writing competition on pollution for those associated with voluntary organisations. Mr Vishwanath Sharma, president of the mandal, said on Friday that essays, not exceeding 1500 to 2000 words, should reach them by September 15.top
