AMRITSAR Rafting
A rafting
expedition was flagged off on rivers Sutlej and
Beas. The expedition is being conducted by an
armoured regiment. The GOC flagged off the
expedition at Phillaur and Col. N.S. Kapur,
flagged off the Beas team at Sri-Hargobindpur.
The two teams of three boats each will cover 100
km each on the two rivers in three days. The
teams will join in at the finishing point at
Harike.

Union at a meeting held here on Friday urged the
government to release a pay scale of Rs 4,500
Rs 7,200 for drivers.

The city
police has registered a case under Sections 302,
201 and 34 of the IPC against Vijay Kumari, wife
of an inspector in Punsup, for allegedly killing
her two-year-old son Deepak at Kirti Nagar on
Thursday. The body of the child has not been
traced so far.

Mr Kashmir
Singh Kang, president of the Punjab Mazdoor Dal,
on Friday accused the SAD-BJP government of not
protecting the interests of workers. He said the
minimum wages of unskilled and skilled workers
should be fixed at Rs 3,500 and Rs 7,000 per
month, respectively.

Mr R.M. Gupta,
District Sessions Judge, has sentenced six
persons to life imprisonment under Section 302,
IPC, for murdering two persons at Babowal Chhania
village, the Public Prosecutor said here on

The
International Kirtan Council, a religious
organisation, will organise a kirtan darbar in
connection with the celebrations of the 300th
birth of the Khalsa Panth at the state gurdwara
here on September, 11, according to Mr H.S.

The local
Rotary Club organised a sapling plantation camp
at Niyamatpur village on Friday. The camp was

Environment Association organised a
"chetna" rally and vanamahotsava on
Friday. Mr Mohan Lal, Minister of Forests,
Punjab, said on the occasion-2 crore saplings
would be planted in the state in the next two
months and various afforestation schemes would be
introduced under a Japanese-aided project.
