UK firm wants to set up waste to fuel plant
Jalandhar, October 14 The team led by Neil Okshott, senior engineer of the UK-based company, visited the site yesterday and showed its willingness to set up a plant to change waste to fuel using plasma technology that too without the release of any emissions. The team was aghast to see huge mounds of garbage spread all over. Dheeraj Ghai, owner of the Punjab Grow More Fertilizers, who had started the fertilizer plant at the site after a tie-up with Municipal Corporation, has been protesting that the MC has since its inauguration in 1999 failed to support his company for marketing of the manure. “I am hopeful that the UK-based experts could come as a big relief for the Jalandhar MC by clearing it of the massive garbage dump for which the civic body seems to have almost lost all its hope,” he said. Ghai added that the experts had taken along the samples of the garbage from various points to check its chemical viability for the project. The proposal for a probable tie-up, for which only a preliminary visit and discussions has been held, may come as a big relief for hundreds of families around the site residing at Jalandhar Vihar, Jalandhar Kunj and Wariana village. The Jalandhar MC has also so far failed to get its solid waste management project with the private contractor, JITF Urban Infrastructures Limited, started owing to protests by the safai karamcharis for the last nearly two years. Everytime that the company officials, who have since long hired staff and purchased the requisite machinery and equipments, is asked to start the door-to-door lifting, massive protests by the safai employees force the officials to put off the project. The matter has gone to the office of Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal as well who is yet to take a call. |
