Shortage of jute bags affects wheat procurement
Megha Mann
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, May 4
With the grain markets facing a shortage of jute bags for storing wheat, rice millers said the government can take the surplus stock of gunny bags that they have and smoothen the ongoing procurement process.

The president of the District Rice Millers’ Association Narain Garg said for storing 402 quintals of paddy, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) gave rice millers around 1,151 gunny bags. Of these 1,151 bags, only 540 were used, while around 53 percent are left as surplus. “We pay Rs 26 per bag to the FCI. But with a huge stock left behind, we are forced to make a distressed sale and end up selling the bags for Rs 15 or even less per bag,” he said.

Due to the paucity of gunny bags, lifting of procured wheat in grain markets has been affected. Most of the markets have reported piles of procured wheat waiting to be lifted.

President of the Bathinda Commission Agents Association said that two years ago in 2012-13, the state government faced a similar shortage of gunny bags and had bought the stock from the millers.

“This time, too, the condition is same. However, the government’s policy on the subject is different. The government says that under its policy, gunny bags will have to be diverted from other district headquarters of various procurement agencies, but the same will not be brought from the local commission agent,” he said.

Tarsem Saini, president of the state association of rice millers said for long, rice millers have been requesting the government to re-use the gunny bags meant for paddy procurement.

“Re-use will not only save money but will also check the wastage of gunny bags or the shortage that is currently being faced,” he said.

Millers suggested that taking the surplus gunny bags at this point of year, which is six months before the paddy arrival, will also ensure that the government recovers some of the amount from the defaulter millers.

However, DM, Markfed, MS Brar said the government’s policy lays emphasis on using fresh gunny bags only as the stored ones at the milling centres might be infested. “To avoid infection due to infested bags, the government wants that fresh bags should only be used for storing the crop,” he added.

Meanwhile, the District Food and Supplies Controller (DFSC) Captain Praveen Vij said that by Monday, the paucity would be overcome.

“We are getting enough number of bags from Jalandhar and Patiala tomorrow. We abide by the government policy, which does not allow picking of bags from the millers,” he said.

NDRF requests MCB for opening swimming pool for practice sessions
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, May 4
The 8th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), which is entrusted with the task of disaster management in the northern India states, has given a request to the Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) asking for opening the swimming pool at the Nehru Park for its practice sessions.

The NDRF, earlier, used to practice in the Thermal lakes that the state government has given on lease for entertainment purposes. With no place left for practice, the NDRF has now turned to the MCB seeking the swimming pool.

Despite the mercury soaring high, the Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) has not been able to start the swimming pool at Nehru Park in the Civil Lines. The swimming pool of the municipal corporation lies in a neglected state with its water purifier not functioning properly.

With the MCB-run pool not working, most of the wannabe swimmers flock to the swimming pool at Model Town Phase I, which is run by the Bathinda Development Authority (BDA).

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kamal Kant Goyal said the MCB pool will be opened within a week. Probable fee for adult membership would be fixed at Rs 500, while that for the students would be Rs 200.

Illegal speed-breakers irk commuters
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, May 4
Many illegal speed-breakers that have been constructed by residents on their own without any prior permission from the authorities concerned seem to have become unsafe for commuters.

As these illegal speed-breakers have been constructed unscientifically, they cause several accidents and damage vehicles because of their sharp curves.

At Guru Teg Bahadur Singh Nagar, Street No 6, which is opposite the DAV College, people have constructed six to seven illegal speed-breakers.

Commuters find it hard to pass through these roads and have started opting for other routes.

In other residential areas also, people have constructed illegal speed-breakers and that has led to an increase in cases of accidents as commuters, without knowing, hit these speed-breakers and lose their balance.

Prabal Baghla, a student, while talking to the Bathinda Tribune about the problem, said it was quite unfortunate that people have constructed such illegal speed-breakers outside their houses and the administration had not taken any action so far. These speed-breakers have become a big headache for the commuters.
