Bathinda, May 2 Jassi accused the police of not taking action against a SAD MLA from Delhi, who, according to him, was present in Mansa district on April 30. “Despite repeated complaints, no action was taken against the MLA, who, along with his supporters, ferried voters to polling booths in the vehicle fitted with party flags," Jassi said. Suspecting bogus voting during evening, he questioned the increase in voter turnout all of a sudden after 5 pm. Jassi also showed a video footage of a booth level officer (BLO) signing voting slips without any verification. Jassi also showed a video in which a man was counting money at a crowded place at a village in Mansa. Accusing the the circle president of the SAD, Chamkaur Singh Mann, of indulging in irregularities, Jassi said Mann remained present at a polling booth even after the polling ended. “The others, including AAP polling agents, were told to leave but Mann remained present at the polling booth even after 6 pm. When we questioned his presence inside the polling booth, he failed to answer and was defended by several senior government officials," Jassi alleged. Meanwhile, Mann said, “When the polling was over and EVMs were sealed, how I can indulge in any kind of irregularity?" He added that he was not present at the polling booth after the polling ended. Denying all the allegations, Mann said he would take action against those who were levelling baseless allegations against him. District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishore Yadav said neither the AAP candidate had shown him any footage nor he had received photographs showing poll code violation. “Everything was done as per the guidelines of the Election Commission and if someone has any proof of any irregularity, he must come forward to prove it. We will surely look into the issue," Yadav said. |

Bathinda, May 2 The government has also directed the private hospitals and other medical institutes to abide by the directions. Notably, the government has directed all government and private hospitals to treat road accident victims for free. “The government has directed that no road accident victim should suffer due to the lack of money or the absence of any attendant. However, the orders are not being adhered to. We fear that the new orders may meet the same fate,” said a member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bathinda, who runs a hospital on the GT Road. Meanwhile, an acid attack victim said it was not the cost of treatment but the tragedy that hurt them the most. She said government hospitals did not have the required facilities to treat acid attack victims . “We can get free first aid at government hospitals but for plastic surgery, one will have to rush to Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, or the PGIMER, Chandigarh,” she said. Earlier, if the police accompanied a rape victim to a government hospital, the victim was charged nothing for treatment.However, if a rape victim came to a hospital alone, she had to pay the charges as fixed for other medico legal cases. |

Bathinda, May 2 Starting from April 30, which was election day, May 1 was a gazetted holiday due to Labour Day and on May 2 a religious holiday was declared. On May 3 and 4 fall Saturday and Sunday, respectively, which are rest days. A heavy rush is expected at the Bathinda Suwidha Centre in the district administrative complex on Monday. Against more than 1,000 persons visiting every working day before the elections, only 250 persons visited the centre during the elections. Jaswinder Singh, Suwidha Centre in-charge, said everybody seemed to be busy during the elections, as a result of which, the number of people applicants had decreased considerably. "After five holidays in a row, we are expecting a huge number of applicants on May 5. We are ready for it. Ranbir Kaur, a resident of Power House Road, said she required her son’s birth certificate but she could not get due to the holidays. “I will reach the Suwidha Centre early in the morning on Monday. At least, the Suwidha Centre should be open on Saturday,” she said. Similarly, those who required copied of the mutation of their land at fard kendras, too, suffered. |
Light drizzle brings respite from heat
Bathinda, May 2 The sun continued to play hide and seek throughout the day today. The residents sweat profusely amid the rising humidity level. While the maximum temperature was recorded at 40 degree Celsius today, the minimum temperature was 27 degree Celsius. The cool breeze started blowing in the afternoon. Meanwhile, many areas in the city experienced light drizzle. Many areas in the city were hit by hailstorm. The mercury had touched the 45 degree Celsius mark on Thursday. Notably, the heatwave has claimed two lives in the past three days. According to the meteorological department, the heatwave will continue in the region and temperature was likely to cross 47 degree Celsius in the days ahead. Social welfare organisations have also started free water service. Dr Ripudamanjit Singh Kalra said due to an increase in temperature, the number of patients suffering from stomach infection had increased. Dr Kalra said people should have a balanced diet. He said people should drink water in large quantity and eat fibre-rich food. People should avoid fried food in these conditions, he advised. |

Dr Dinesh Gupta, who operated upon Harjinder Kaur, a resident of Sekha Kalan village from Bagha Purana area, said she complained of severe stomach ache about three months ago. “She consulted several doctors in Moga, Ludhiana and Bathinda, but the cause of the pain could not be diagnosed despite several tests and scans. Slowly she also developed numbness in her legs which worsened so much that it became impossible for her to stand straight or walk. She also developed constipation and difficulty in passing urine. She became practically bed-ridden and could only drag herself to the bathroom with great difficulty,” said Dr Dinesh. An MRI diagnostic test showed a tumor in her spinal cord. Doctors had told Harjinder that an operation for the tumor was extremely risky and may cause total or complete paralysis. Harjinder said she was resigned to her fate and was confined to bed for her entire life when she sought consultation in this hospital. Dr Dinesh said during a five-hour-long operation, the tumor was removed, taking extreme care not to damage the normal spinal cord. After the operation, Harjinder was still apprehensive that she would not even be able to sit. With gradual encouragement she tried to get on her feet and has now begun to walk. Her urinary difficulty also has improved and she has asked to remove the urinary catheter. |
