Preparations in full swing for Rahul’s rally
Bathinda, April 27 AICC secretary Harish Choudhary reached the venue to review the arrangements and expressed his satisfaction with the pace of work and the “dedication” with which the work was being undertaken. PPP leader Gurpreet Bhatti was also present to oversee the arrangement. All in a day’s work
While for the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s rally at Model Town, the ground had been cordoned off and security personnel had moved in, “causing’’ much despair to the residents of the area, the venue for Rahul’s rally was changed on Saturday afternoon and the Congress and the PPP workers made sure that the paucity of time didn’t prove to be an impediment. Without wasting much time, the workers roped in a tent house from Haryana and Baba Bakala in Amritsar to raise the structure. Close to 250 workers were brought in to set up the stage, barricades and the rest of the structure. The work went on till 2 at night and resumed at 8 in the morning. The workers also stated that a portion of the boundary wall of the ground, guarded with a wire mesh till now, will be opened for the flow of public apart from the entrance from the main road. The entry gate from inside the colony will be used for the movement of the VIPs and special guests. The party members also worked overtime on Saturday and Sunday to ensure that a huge gathering turn up for the rally. Sources revealed that “supporters” from the nearby areas will be ferried to the rally venue in buses. Party workers allege harassment
Ghura Singh Tungwali, president of the District Congress Committee stated that the owner of the tent house from Baba Bakala was being harassed for providing tent for the rally in Bathinda. “While he was supervising his workers here, he had to go back home as news of some police personnel reaching his home arrived. But his workers are here,” he said. Another PPP leader alleged that the party workers had been getting phone calls from the opposition to try to dissuade them from participating in the rally preparations. The leader also added that before the formation of the PPP, the party leaders were accustomed to working with Sukhbir Singh Badal who then formed the opposition. The workers found themselves in the same position this time around. Schedule changed
Earlier, the AICC vice-president was scheduled to address the rally in Bathinda at 10 am before leaving for a rally in Faridkot and subsequently for Uttar Pradesh. Given the shortage of time and arrangements being made on a war footing, the schedule was changed and Rahul will now address the rally in Faridkot before coming to Bathinda at around 12 noon. Harish Chaurdhary stated that although no senior Congress leader will accompany Rahul, the Congress and the PPP leaders could be present. |
SAD to hold first roadshow today
Bathinda, April 27 The SAD’s road show will coincide with AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s rally scheduled to be held at Thermal Ground. Starting from Dhobi Bazaar at 9 am, SAD’s Lok Sabha candidate Harsimrat Kaur Badal, along with party workers, will take out a road show in the areas of Sadbhavna Chowk, Hospital Bazaar, Railway Road, Post Office Bazaar, Sadar Bazaar, Bank Bazaar, Arya Samaj Chowk, Kikkar Bazaar and culminate at Sirki Bazaar. Fourty eight hours before the commencement of the polling procedure are crucial as none of the candidates are allowed to hold any public meetings or processions during this period. Once the campaigning period is over, political functionaries, who have come from outside and who are not voters of the constituency, can’t continue to remain present in the constituency. Such functionaries have to leave the constituency immediately after the campaigning period is over. However, it does not apply in the case of a candidate who is fighting the election or his election agent even if they are not voters in the constituency. Political parties and independent candidates are not allowed to ferry voters to the polling stations on the day of election and 48 hours before. To make these orders more effective, the Election Department will revoke permissions given to all candidates for plying their vehicles. Instead, fresh permissions will be issued along with numbers of the vehicles to be used. Each candidate will be granted permission for 11 vehicles, which will include one vehicle each for the candidate and one for his election agent and one each for the nine assembly constituencies. |
Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi to give Bathinda a boost
Bathinda, April 27 Despite the traffic travails and security snarls causing inconvenience to the residents, the rallies would buoy the city and its importance in the corridors of politics. Residents of the city, belonging to a cross-section of the society agreed that the high-profile battle for the Bathinda constituency had made its mark on the national political scene as well. “Bathinda is witnessing an archetypal fight between Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Manpreet Badal with the AAP candidate set to spoil the show for either of them. The constituency is witnessing a high-profile political activity due to its high-profile candidates. The defeat or victory of Harsimrat is a question of life and death for the SAD,” said the principal of DAV College, Dr JS Anand. “If Manpreet wins, it would set the ball rolling for a different set of permutations and combinations into play. Right now, Bathinda is the political capital of the state and in Harsimrat’s defeat, the SAD will lose its centre of power. Narendra Modi’s rally in the city was an investment to which the SAD-BJP alliance is now expecting a return,” he added. Industrial consultant RK Madaan maintained that the city was poised to gain a lot of mileage from the political bigwigs coming to address the voters here. “Winning the Bathinda constituency is a matter of prestige for the SAD-BJP alliance. Similarly, the opposition party is eyeing the constituency to give a setback to the ruling alliance. Bathinda is increasingly becoming a hub of activities since even the agitating unions chose the city to hold their state-level rallies. The city, which was little known outside the state, is now being talked about as one of the important constituencies,” he said. A housewife Neha Goyal stated that the influx of political hotshots into the city had left the voters of the constituency thinking and planning to use their franchise judiciously. “Modi and Rahul’s rallies have proven that the Bathinda parliamentary seat is an important one and that is making the voters think a lot before the state goes to polls on April 30. No matter who wins, the political scenario in the constituency is bound to be a high-pitched one since the winner would try to prove his/her efficiency while the opposition would keep an eagle-eye on every move of the government. Either way, Bathinda will gain,” she said. |

SAD hoping high on dinner diplomacy in Bathinda
Bathinda, April 27 Highly placed sources in the SAD confirmed that SAD president and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has himself called many influential businessmen even from outside the Bathinda constituency to organise lavish lunch or dinner in support of the SAD nominee Harsimrat Kaur Badal and calls as many people they can for lunch or dinner in the city. As industrialist and CMD of the BCL Industries Ltd, Rajinder Mittal, hosted a dinner in support of Harsimrat Badal at Ganpati Township in the city on Saturday night. While Anil Bhola, a close aide of a former Finance Minister Surinder Singla who had recently switching his loyalty joined the SAD hosted a dinner in support of the SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday night. The SAD is expecting to gain the support of urban voters and residents of the city through these dinner diplomacy. But this buffet diplomacy is not going the SAD way as they expected. Some days ago, owners of Setia Paper Mill, who hails from Muktsar district, had hosted lunch in support of SAD candidate Harsimrat Badal and invited a large number of people from the city at Hotel Krishna Continental. But to the embarrassment for the hosts, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal did not turn up for the lunch as scheduled nor did the SAD candidate Harsimrat Kaur Badal.A close aid of the owners of Setia Paper Mill while talking to Bathinda Tribune said it was quite embarrassing for the hosts as they had called people from the city stating that they were cordially invited for the lunch with Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. He also told that they organised the lunch in support of the SAD candidate as per the instructions of the Deputy Chief Minister that was why they came from Muktsar to Bathinda to host lunch. One of the persons who attended the lunch in which Sukhbir Badal did not come said that it was sad that Sukhbir didn’t come even after giving time. While one who attended dinner at Ganpati Enclave said these informal dinners organised in the support of the candidates are good as they give chance to know the vision of candidate for the city and to know her little better personally. |

‘MP should be a statesman with a vision and mission for people’
The Bathinda Tribune is carrying the views of residents of the city, outlining their hopes from the new Bathinda MP. In the second part of the series, Lt Col (retd) Daya Singh, President, Ex-Servicemen’s Welfare Association, shares his views...
I
expect the Member of Parliament from Bathinda to play a meaningful role for the state of Punjab in the Lower House of the Union Legislature. The MP should be less of a politician and more of a statesman with a vision and mission for the next generation.
The MP should not interfere in the day to day administrative work by towing away all officials to meet the members of the public during visits to the constituency. This one action will relieve the public of their time and money and redress their grievances. The MP should get a feedback on the social health of the people to help them get rid of drugs and liquor consumption. The youth of today are unfit for routine work and have poor health standards for joining the armed forces and the police. The MP must work to denounce the dynastic rule and the political power should trickle down to all sections of society
for participative democracy and to instill respect in our constitutional provisions. The public institutions need to be strengthened for the well-being and social security of all. The MP must look after the defence establishment to get a feedback and keep the arsenal ready for meeting the challenges on our borders and costal lines. Above all, he/she should be a person well versed with the political and economic systems to support the social fibre of society to maintain cultural values and traditions. The spirit of the preamble of our constitution should remain his beacon light to lead the Bathinda constituency on to the path of prosperity. Human resources are an asset for inclusive growth. The Ex-Servicemen and Pensioners Common Forum, to ensure social well-being and political stability through electoral reforms, wants to root out corruption from all walks of life. It also aims at removing nepotism to make the administration responsive and efficient in the delivery of public services. Above all, the MP should be a technology-driven environmentalist, philosopher, guide and friend of the public, easily accessible with minimum security cover. The MP should not have the image of a rogue elephant among the educated citizenry of the constituency. He should instead be an example of austerity to respect public money and natural resources. |
