Networking sites spice up poll scene
Bathinda, April 21 Amidst a fierce triangular battle between the Congress, the SAD and the AAP in Bathinda, these applications take the maximum jibes on wrangling between the Badal Bahu and her brother-in-law Manpreet Badal. Also, pictures of the AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal wrestling with Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, video of the AAP candidate from Sangrur Bhagwant Mann poking fun at political leaders, caricatures of devar-bharjai (brother-in-law and sister-in-law) with Punjabi songs or sayings are doing the rounds these days. “This is not for the first time that caricatures and jokes in the form of videos, photos and writing are circulated ahead of the polls. But the only difference is that this time, these messages are being spread around in a more valiant manner,” said Jaswinder Sandhu, a city resident. The reports published in newspapers or broadcast on television reach in a more professional manner with the missing tinge of satire, he said. Adding the masala (spice) by taking potshots at almost every political leader and political party in a satirical manner in these applications fills the void. The fictional characters along with the superimposed faces of the renowned political personalities have taken potshots with well articulated speeches converted into jokes. “The jokes have indeed added a colour to the polls and have offered people enough matter to discuss politics. The advantage of such satire, laced with criticism, shows the real picture of every political party and candidate,” said Gurman Brar, a first time voter and student. “Jokes apart, as the campaign gains momentum, people also get to know the latest developments, venues of rally, candidate’s statements and other day-to-day developments in and around,” said Palwinder Kaur Sidhu, a housewife residing at Hazura Kapura Colony. She said her family members discuss serious topics about politics, development and voting in such a simple manner that her seven-year-old son, too, is now showing interest in knowing who will be the next Prime Minister. “People are also sitting with fingers crossed about who will get the maximum votes and who will also be the winner between devar-bharjai,” said Sonia, a lecturer. She said that funny things like party candidates straying into Haryana villages where people enjoy speeches and then inform that votes have already been polled in their villages are the most sought after jokes. She pointed out that the cartoons and speeches, which are not seen otherwise, are the most entertaining people with thrill. Apart from the non-serious anonymous messages, the political parties are also chipping in to increase their fan following using various internet sites, portals and WhatsApp videos. |

58 women have delivered babies on board 108 ambulance in three years
Bathinda, April 21 The service has attended to 38,632 patients of varied cases of trauma, farm accidents, cardiac problems and other nature. A largest section of the patients to be benefited by the facility has been pregnant women. In the last three years, 13,803 pregnant women have been ferried in the ambulance. Under the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), the women are taken to respective hospitals and babies below the age of one year are taken for the vaccination programme. This section forms the second largest section at 9,938 cases attended in last three years. Besides, 7,357 cases of assault, sexual assault, stab, gunshot, penetrating trauma, palliative care, etc. have been held. Also, a high number of 2,570 road accident cases have been attended. From among the accidents, the maximum number of farm accident cases (548) have been attended to followed by 425 traumatic injuries and 339 cardiac emergencies. For the first two years, the service employees had a tough time jostling with the pranksters who used to call 108 just for fun. “It was a very difficult task maneuvering their pranksters. We could not afford to miss even a single call as one could hardly differentiate on the phone over genuine and prank call,” said the district in-charge of ambulance service, Raman Garg. He added that though the staff aboard the ambulance is well trained to deal with medical exigency like a woman in labour, yet it was not advisable for pregnant women to not care about the first signs of labour. |
Accusation against Manpreet was brainwork of Sukhbir, says Nimma
Bathinda, April 21 Addressing a gathering of the People’s Party of Punjab and the Congress leaders and workers, Nimma stated that
he wanted to bring it to the attention of the voters that they should not give in to the false allegations levelled against Manpreet Badal by the businessmen in Chandigarh and Ludhiana just a week before
the elections. He alleged that the Badal family was scared of Manpreet and the voters of the Bathinda constituency and added that the family had resorted
to maligning the name of Manpreet to misguide the voters. “When Manpreet was a
part of the government, he didn’t misuse his power. Before accusing him
of land grabbing and dragging his name into other criminal cases, the Badal family should look at its own members,” Nimma said. He added that the SAD-BJP candidate for the Bathinda Lok Sabha seat Harsimrat Kaur Badal is
in a soup and is so scared of the anti-incumbency wave that she resorts to using inappropriate language while talking about Manpreet Badal at her rallies. |
Didn’t throw water on Sarup Chand Singla: Sukhbir Badal
Bathinda, April 21 “I would never do such a thing. It didn’t happen,” he said while answering media queries on the
subject after releasing the election manifesto of the Shiromani Akali Dal here today. In half jest, he added that the MLA, who was sitting on the dais with him, can throw (a glass of water) at him (as he
was elder). Rumours were spreading in the city for past few weeks that the electorate had exposed anger against the MLA for not being helpful and accessible to them. It had become a burning topic among the city residents. It was alleged that Sukhbir asked the MLA at a late evening meeting about the party’s prospects in the city and threw a glass full of
water at not getting a positive reply. Local newspapers had even reported the incident, but so far, the Deputy CM or the MLA had not denied it publicly. The alleged trouble between the MLA and the SAD leadership had also gained ground with the induction of local congress leader Anil Bhola into the Shiromani Akali Dal. It was being speculated that Anil Bhola may be the next face of the Akali party in the city. The Akalis are aiming to garner as much votes as possible from the city. In the previous Lok Sabha elections, SAD-BJP candidates had trailed by over 10,000 votes from the city. |

Better bathinda sports stadium—II Sukhmeet Bhasin Tribune News Service
Bathinda, April 21 The sports fraternity criticises the lavish spending by the SAD-BJP government on Bollywood stars during the inaugural ceremony of all the three Kabaddi World Cups. The fraternity suggests that instead of wasting money on stars, the government should spend money on providing coaches and better facilities to the players. Narinder, a staff member of the District Sports Department at Multipurpose Sports Stadium, said he was aware of the problems of the players and their office had written a letter to the department in this regard making them aware of the shortage of coaches and funds. Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishore Yadav while talking to Bathinda Tribune admits they there are inadequate sports facilities for the players due to the shortage of staff and funds, for which he has written to the higher authorities of the department and is waiting for their reply. He also assured that very soon, vacant posts of the coaches will be filled. Bathinda Tribune also spoke to a cross-section of sports fraternity and district administration to find out what they could possibly do and provide better facilities to the players. Maintain astro turf
The Sports Department has built big stadia but has not provided the basic infrastructure required by the players. Astro turf has been laid but no steps have been taken to maintain it. The astro turf has started drying up because the motor installed here is not working due to some technical problem for the past ten days. Even the astro turf dust cleaner has not been purchased by the department yet. Diljot Singh, hockey player Provide coaches
There is no facility available for the players at the Multipurpose Stadium. There are only coaches for football, hockey, swimming and athletics, while players of other games like boxing, kabaddi, table tennis, lawn tennis, basketball, volley ball, hand ball and many more are practicing without any guidance. In two-three games, senior or former players have started giving guidance to young players without any support from the Sports Department. Gulshan Kumar, former judo player Use stadia for sports only
The Sports Department has ruined the careers of many promising sports persons by turning a blind eye towards their concerns. The city has produced many international and national medal winners in the past, but the result is on decline if we see the current graph. Instead of making full use of the Multipurpose Sports Stadium for sports, the department is using it more for cultural and other purposes like kabaddi inaugural ceremony, Virasat Mela, book fair and distribution of fire crackers during Diwali every year which is not right to do. Raghubir Chand Sharma, Dean, Malwa College of Physical Education Provide adequate funds
Sportspersons in the city do not have adequate facilities as the Sports Department lacks funds and staff. The procedure for the release of funds is long-winding. If something goes wrong we have to write to the District Sports Department, which in turn writes to the higher authorities and after much discussion, the letter stating the approval or refusal of the grant is released. AAP leader flays Capt’s statement
Amritsar, April 21 He said, “If Capt Amarinder Singh continues to support Tytler, then it could be deciphered that the two (Capt and Tytler) have some common business interest." Jarnail, who is contesting from Delhi West on the AAP ticket, was in the city to seek support for the party candidate Dr Daljit Singh. He said the 1984 riots were not an election issue and they were fighting for justice. Notably, Jarnail had come to the limelight after he threw a shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram in 2009. He said the incident was instrumental in erasing the political career of Jagish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, accused in the anti-Sikh riots. He said," With the broom, we will sweep the corrupt and unjust political system." He said he had thrown a shoe at P Chidambaram as he ignored his question on justice to the riot victims during a press conference in Delhi in April 2009. Jarnail stated on the directions of Arvind Kejriwal, he was in the state for the past four days and AAP would win 10 seats in Punjab. People were fed up with the Congress rule at the centre as its 10-year tenure was marked with scams and high inflation, he added. He said the people of the state were victims of Dr Manmohan Singh’s ‘ghutala sarkar’and the Akali-BJP’s ‘goonda sarkar’ (government of hooligans). “Punjab is grappling with the drugs menace and people urge us to save their children who are being supplied drugs by politicians. He rubbished the theory that AAP was the B-team of the Congress and reminded that it was AAP who had fielded Kumar Vishwas against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. “India is facing three “Cs”- Corruption, Criminalisation of politics and Communalism. We all have to fight the unjust system instead of blaming the governments," Jarnail Singh added. |

Singer’s visit costs SAD candidate dear
Bathinda, April 21 As per the rule, the offices of the Assistant Returning Officers (AROs) are maintaining shadow expenditure registers. These registers calculate expenses incurred by different candidates during the election campaigning. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed all the candidates to get their expenditure registers checked thrice before the elections on April 30 with that of the shadow registers available at the offices of the AROs. Today was the second round of this checking. Interestingly, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been the only one whose own list of expenses was more than that of the shadow register. “This is because we are adding even the money spent on buying food during our campaigns,” said state AAP member Amrit Lal Aggarwal. However, the checking has not gone down well with the SAD, whose expenses are less than those recorded in shadow registers. The major difference is of Rs 50,000, which the ECI has added as the expenses incurred on roping in singer Hans Raj Hans. The ECI sent notice to the SAD over this issue, answering which the SAD has stated that Hans Raj Hans is the vice -president of party and hence, charges of hiring him cannot be added to the expenses. The ECI has added an exoppense of Rs 77,000 in the account of SAD candidate for the April 14 function where SAD chief Sukhbir Badal was present. |

Regents delay opening of lab
Amritsar, April 21 The Government Medical College had received machines for the laboratory a few months ago. The institute was ready with a building to set up machines. Presently the laboratory is waiting for the arrival of regents from Germany so that tests could be conducted. An official at the college on the condition of anonymity said, “It seems that there was some kind of hurry. It would have been better if the lab was inaugurated when it was fully ready.” The project of setting up diagnostic lab for influenza at the Government Medical College was started in 2009, when the state government made a proposal to the Centre government in this regard. Initially the project was delayed as the financial sanction from the state’s Finance Department was pending although the administration had already given a go ahead for the project. One of the bizarre reasons for the delay in execution of the project was the shortage of sand and gravel, when the construction of the building was going on. Sources in the institute said the lack of budget for purchasing regents was the main reason behind the laboratory still not becoming functional. Principal of the Government Medical College, Dr Santokh Singh, said the order for the regents had been placed and they were expected to arrive in two-three weeks. |
