Chaos at Doon Hospital as nurses on strike
Dehradun, December 30 The first day of the strike was enough to present a clear picture of the problems that would arise in the days to come. Vinod Kumar, who had come all the way from Rishikesh to get his wife admitted at the hospital, said; “We arrived at 10 am and for the last two hours neither any nurse nor any doctor has come to provide any assistance. After waiting for this long, when I protested, a doctor came to my wife’s aid.” The situation was worse at the women's hospital where some expectant mothers complained of being asked to leave the hospital. Vaishali, a resident of Garhi cantonment, rued, “My labour pains started when I arrived at the hospital, but the doctors in the labour room asked us to sign a form in which it was mentioned that in the absence of any staff nurse, the risk of delivering a child was on my family and the hospital will not be responsible if anything went wrong.” Another patient requesting anonymity said she had suffered a miscarriage recently and was admitted to the hospital on Sunday night, she added, “Apart from administering an injection, the doctors have not given me any other medicine. I am suffering from acute pain and despite repeated requests no one has attended me properly.” In wake of non-fulfilment of their demands, around 1,400 nurses across the state have boycotted two shits and are working only in the afternoon shift. The association has set a deadline of January 6 for the acceptance of their demands following which they would proceed on an indefinite strike besides boycotting the work completely. The demands raised by the nurses include: payment of arrears under Sixth Pay Commission from January 2008 onwards, appointment of nurses at Doon Hospital in accordance with the norms laid down by the Indian Nursing Council, payment of conveyance allowance at Rs 500 per month and nurses serving in the government sector be designated as gazetted officers like chief pharmacists. Contrary to these problems, Chief Medical Superintendent Dr RS Aswal, while speaking to The Tribune, said, “The working of Doon Hospital and Women hospital has not been affected due to this strike. We are managing fine without the staff nurses. The nurses do nothing more than giving medicines and administering injections to the patients and this can be done by anybody.” Aswal added, “We have brought in 20 Auxiliary Nurse Midwife’s (ANMs) from the periphery areas along with 11 pharmacists, MBBS and BMS interns, to perform duties in various wards. We are trying our best to ensure that normalcy is maintained in the hospital.” On being enquired about patients being sent back in the absence of nurses, CMS Women Hospital Dr Chandra Pant said that though they did not deny any admission for delivery, they were informing patients about the problems they might face in the absence of nurses, especially after the delivery. Pant added, “We have asked for 10 ANMs from the Doon Hospital and they are capable of undertaking delivery on their own. So the question of refusing the patients for delivery does not arise.”
Demands
* Payment of arrears under Sixth Pay Commission from Jan 2008 * Appointment of nurses at Doon Hospital in accordance with norms *
Nurses serving in govt sector be designated as gazetted officers * Payment of conveyance allowance at Rs 500 per month |

Science workshop begins at Kandoli village
Dehradun, December 30 The chief guest at the inauguration was Rajendra Dobhal, CMD and Chairman, National Research and Development Corporation, New Delhi, who emphasised the need for all to develop a ''scientific temperament'' and since science is present everywhere in nature, it will become easy and interesting for the students if the teachers explained science with examples from nature and their surroundings. Dobhal told stories of rubber inventor Dunlop, Edision and Galilio. Brij Mohan Sharma of Specs said that the objective of the workshop is to orient,
sensitise, equip and catalyse for development of scientific temperament among children. Science education is facing a problem. Pure science is becoming increasingly less popular as a subject discipline for study by the students. One of the reasons for this is that the teaching of science has become routine and less engaging for the students. But science cannot be read or taught like history, it becomes very difficult to understand. The prime objective of the project is to develop low-cost teaching tools for a better understanding of science. This science activity camp is designed for the students of junior high school. Brj Mohan Sharma said that the aim was to orient and encourage young minds to explore science through various science based activities and fun and
hence the name Sciencefun. Hands-on activities will engage children with a different science topic each day, he said.

Govt failed to promote sports this year again
Dehradun, December 30 Like previous years, the government did not fulfill its promise of promoting sports this year. But, with an excellent performances by a few sportspersons helped Uttarakhand to be a recognised state on the national map this year. The state cricket association’s long awaited recognition by the BCCI is not coming to an end. The infighting between multiple cricket associations existing in the state still continues, putting the future of budding cricketers of the state in darkness. Due to lack of facilities and ongoing politics in the sports associations, the young cricketers are forced to migrate to other states to make their future. Dehradun’s Abhimanyu brought laurels to the state by making into the probable list of under-19 World Cup team. The situation is no different for the state’s soccer players. The conflict between the office bearers of the association has hampered the growth of the game in the state. Due to an internal strife, parallel soccer leagues were organised in Dehradun this year. Uttarakhand’s Raja Rawat made it to the India under-19 football team, while Anirudh Thapa and Deependra Negi entered into the India under-16 soccer squad. In the women category, Anita Rawat and Raksha Pawar made the state proud by making into the national under-19 women team. Meanwhile, in August, Uttarakhand Volleyball Association President Awdesh Chaudhary was elected in the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI). Under his guidance, the Uttarakhand volleyball team remained runners up in the National Senior Volleyball Championship held in Muradabad recently. With the year coming to an end, another big promise came from the state government of constructing an international scale cricket ground at Raipur in Dehradun. Interestingly, successive governments in the state have made similar promises but were not fulfilled. Now the challenge is to see whether the government will adhere to its commitment this time or not. |
