Treatment eludes mentally ill at Nari Niketan
Dehradun, December 25 “The Nari Niketan has become the last resort where all mentally-ill women are being dumped by their insensitive families. We lack specialised care. The staff has not been trained to look after them yet purely on humanitarian ground we provide them shelter,” said Ram Avtar Singh, District Welfare Officer. While both Henna and Marina are lucky enough to receive the specialised treatment, there are 67 other mentally ill patients who may wait for years to find a place at the hospital, which can accommodate only
30 patients. “The days of keeping mentally ill patients locked in dark rooms are over. Today, family members are being encouraged to reside with patients and actively participate in their day to day care. But with the Nari Niketan inmates, it is bit different. They have no relative and we cannot keep them at the hospital for long,” said Dr JS Bisht, a psychiatrist at the hospital. “The mentally ill will continue to reside at the Nari Niketan and in case they undergo treatment at the hospital, their chances of leading a normal life would be bleak as we not have a plan for these hapless women,” said Dr Saraswati Singh, a psychologist. |

CPI (ML) to contest LS poll from Almora, Pauri, Nainital
Dehradun, December 25 Comrade Rajendra Pratholi said in the recently held elections in Nepal, the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) had emerged as the biggest leftist party. “The people of Nepal have made it clear that they are with the left parties. Similarly, the result of the local body elections in America, Venezuela and the presidential elections in Chile have shown a tilt in left parties’ favour.” “In the recently concluded Assembly elections in the country, the Congress has suffered a severe blow even though the Bhartiya Janta Party gained some ground. The Delhi Assembly elections have made it clear that the country has the potential to bring a revolution. The gain of the Aam Aadmi Party is the result of this revolt,” he added. Lambasting Vijay Bahuguna-led state government, comrade Raja Bahuguna said the Chief Minister was not sensitive towards the plight of disaster-affected people. “There has been a massive bungling of funds received for the the relief work. Instead of doing some work in the disaster-affected areas, the government is merely showing the work on paper. Recently, by organising an adventure car rally, the state government is sending a false message. Neither the roads nor the bridges have been repaired in the affected areas. Even those affected by the floods have not been rehabilitated,” he added. It was also decided at the meeting that the party would collect funds for the riot-affected people of Muzzafarnagar. The fund-collection drive would be carried from December 28 to 30. Further, on January 2, a nationwide demonstration demanding the arrest of those behind the riots would be carried out.
In the fray
The CPI (ML) will contest the LS poll from Almora, Pauri Garhwal and Nainital. The names of the
candidates will be declared in the first week of January. |

2013 Review: Tourisme
Dehradun, December 25 The impact of the Himalayan tsunami was so severe that apart from killing thousands of tourists, mainly pilgrims on the Char Dham Yatra, it reduced the percentage of tourists visiting the state by almost 85 per cent. The pre-bookings done by those seeking to visit the state were cancelled altogether. Hotels, lodges and inns, thriving on tourism, were closed down, thus bringing huge losses to
the owners. June considered being peak season for tourism, brought destruction and a sinking tourist economy. According to the data, every year nearly 25 lakh pilgrims participate in the Char Dham Yatra that includes the Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines. Considered as the backbone of Garhwal economy, the yatra was suspended in wake of the massive destruction. Even cities like Mussoorie, Nainital, Jim Corbett, Dehradun, Lansdowne and Kasauni saw a decline in tourist influx by 30 to 40 per cent. According to a study, the tourism industry suffered a loss of Rs12, 000 crore. With vanished roads, ruined hotels and broken confidence of the locals, the scale of destruction was so huge that several people including the Tourism Minister Amrita Rawat thought that it would take years to make the state ready to usher the tourists. However, with the sheer grit and determination, even before the end of the “disaster year”, not only the state bounced back but also braced itself for
the tourists. Seeking divine blessing by organising a prayer and havan at the worst hit Kedarnath shrine, Uttarakhand took the first step towards the restoration of the state. To send out a positive message to the tourists about the state being ready once again, the Tourism Department has organised a three-day Winter Carnival at the “Queen of hills” Mussoorie from December 27. The carnival will include cultural depiction parade at Landour, play by eminent actor Tom Alter, performances by A Sivamani, Ravi Chary and Stephen Devassy, Mussoorie Heritage Walk Circuit, the Run for Mussoorie, mountain biking, cycling, a fashion show by the Ministry of Textiles, roller skating, treasure hunt, tea with Ruskin Bond, a photography competition for locals and tourists, a live band competition, Ramchaul - A cultural night with performance of NS Negi, Pritam Bharatwan, and Shibani Kashyap and a Vintage Car Rally. Apart from this, a national-level adventure car rally has also been organised that would be covering majority of the state, including the disaster hit areas. The rally will cover Rishikesh, Shivpuri, Dev Prayag, Rudra Prayag, Karan Prayag, Chamoli, Joshimath, Auli, Karan Prayag, Chaukhutiya, Kumerian, Ramnagar on the east of Jim Corbett Park, Nainidhada
and Kotdwar. The rally was aimed to send a message to both the domestic and the international tourists that the roads in the state were smooth and safe.
Instilling confidence in visitors

bring things back on track but also braced itself for tourists. Seeking divine blessings by organising a prayer and havan at the worst hit Kedarnath shrine,

No funds released by BJP for Modi rally: MLA
Dehradun, December 25 As things stand today, the BJP leaders say that the contributions were made by the grass root leaders and the contributions by the MPs
and MLAs. “I must tell you that no funds were released by the BJP headquarters in Uttarakhand. All of us contributed for the rally at different levels,” said
Harbans Kapoor, BJP MLA and rally in charge. A few days ago, Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna had also raised questions about the expenditure made by the BJP, but so far the BJP had ducked such questions. None of the leaders have come forward with the figures and continue to maintain that even the well-wishers of the
BJP dipped into their resources by contributing for the rally that saw several LCD screens installed at all the important points. The party leaders
maintained that the party would not be going into the details of the expenditure as what matters is
the end result. “At the end of the day, we are happy that the rally turned out to be a big draw that even jolted the Congress into action,” said a senior leader. While the BJP does not shy away from pointing fingers at the Congress for using muscle and money power in the election, the way the party had been spending on pre-election rallies, clearly
showed that the party was also following the same path as the Congress as far as splurging money on rallies was concerned. Prior to the last Assembly election, senior BJP leader Bacchi Singh Rawat had even gone to the extent to suggest that the party would not
hesitate to make it’s spending in the elections open for public scrutiny. |
