Man shot at by cop at shop, injured
Jalandhar, December 25 According to witnesses, around 10.30 pm, a policeman came to the liquor shop in Bhur Mandi on Tuesday. He was already drunk. At the same time, Ajay Kumar Sethi, along with his brother, Sonu, also reached the shop. Being known to each other, they greeted, but over some issue they immediately started arguing. Immediately, the policeman fired three shots from his service carbine. One bullet crossed over while the two bullets pierced through his body. “The policeman fled the spot immediately and we took Ajay to the nearest hospital where he underwent an operation on Tuesday night. “Although he is conscious, his condition is still unstable,” said Sonu, brother of the victim, who was accompanying him at the time of the incident. On the other hand, the condition of the victim is although stable but he has not been declared out of danger by the hospital authorities. The police produced the accused policeman in the Judicial Magistrate’s court where he was remanded to a one-day police custody. Two held for ATM frauds
Jalandhar, December 25 The accused, who is in his 20s, while in the custody of City Commissionerate police, said that he used to get heroin from the Ali Mohalla locality where it was easily available. “When I start facing shortage of money to fulfill my desire of taking heroin, I thought of making gullible ATM users including uneducated women and aged persons my target to get money to purchase drug,” he said. Vijay said he had withdrawn over Rs 3 lakh from nearly 30 ATM users from different parts of the city. Regarding his modus opernadi, he said he kept on standing outside a selected ATM kiosk. “When a possible target entered the kiosk, I followed that target inside the kiosk and when that person felt difficulty in withdrawing money, either that person sought my assistance or I offered my help. I entered password and amount but I did not press “yes” button and I used to tell that person that sufficient money is not available in his account. In between the ATM machine remained on standby mode. When that person went outside the kiosk, I pressed “yes” button and got the amount,” he said. Regarding his second modus operandi, he said “I remembered the password of the gullible ATM user after that person agreed for my help and I kept that person’s original ATM with me and handed over that person a “waste” ATM trickily. Subsequently, I used to get money using that ATM.” An autorickshaw driver, Sukhwinder Singh, of Aman Vihar used to help the accused by keeping a watch outside the ATM kiosk when Vijay would commit crime inside
the kiosk. A police party led by Division No.1 SHO, Inspector, Balbir Singh, succeeded in solving the cases of ATM frauds by nabbing both the accused. In reply to a question, ACP north, Gurnam Singh, and SHO, Balbir Singh, said “We will definitely nab the drug-peddlers from Ali Mohalla after interrogating the accused.” The police said no money had been recovered from them so far, however, three ATM cards, one each of PNB, SBI and SBoP had been recovered from their possession. |
Christmas celebrated across the region with gaiety
Jalandhar, December 25 In many churches, beautifully decorated cribs were made to make even the illiterate people understand the birth scene of Jesus Christ. Visitors could be seen enjoying the melodious carols announcing the birth of the Christ. For long, the markets were flooded with Christmas trees, stars, jingle bells, music and cakes. “This year, we celebrated Christmas with Communal Harmony as the theme. We had organised a Sarv Dharam Sammelan few days ago in which we spread the message of unity and equality among all the religions. We have also told people to celebrate the festival in the right spirit for the overall upliftment of the society,” said Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the Jalandhar Diocese. People started thronging the churches since early morning itself. While elderly ones were seen praying inside the church, children were seen getting mystified by the aura of the carefully decorated crib depicting the birth of the Jesus Christ. Mass prayers and Santa Claus were the main attractions at these churches during midnight and Christmas celebrations at churches of both Catholics and Protestants. St. Mary’s cathedral, one of the oldest churches in the Cantt area held a midnight prayer service on Tuesday night. Other services like music, singing, reading of the Bible and exposition of its contents was held at
the venue. “Many people have come to the Churches to seek blessings of Jesus Christ, including many non-Christians. They feel that since this is the day when a son is born in the
house of god, he will fulfil all their wishes,” said Father Peter. Apart from that, many schools and clubs also celebrated Christmas in a true festival fervour. St. Joseph’s convent school for boys and girls celebrated the festival few
days back. Also, Genius play school in AS Villa Colony organised a Christmas party for the children in which Santa Claus distributed gifts to the children. Most of the clubs and even many people have decorated huge Christmas trees in their houses. Many of them distributed free blankets and clothes to the destitute living on the city roads in the winter season. Malls and shopping complexes in the cities were also decked up with Santa Claus cut outs and big Christmas trees Santa Clauses were spotted in malls giving chocolates and gifts to children. Some hotels in the city have organised a Christmas bash, where live music with DJ, unlimited beverage was available. Spark Punjabi, the Punjabi Music channel, also hosted a scintillating party on the Christmas eve by playing the much loved Punjabi Music by the channel’s popular host VJ Dhanveer with many excited viewers who were selected through an on-air contest at the popular Hundred Dogs Discotheque in the city. There was lot of fun and frolic as everybody danced to the tunes of latest upbeat music and feasted
on the sumptuous food and beverages. Demand of Christians
Burial ground in the city: The Christians in the district are facing a lot of problems due to the absence of any burial ground. Presently, there are only two small chunks of land in the city. While one is inside the cantt area, the other is in the Lambha Pind. Since most of the area in these two lands is almost full, the Christians have no option but to take the dead body to Phagwara for the burial. They have requested so many times to the district administration but no respite has been provided to them so far. Rights for the Dalit Christians:
Prior to 1947, the British, in response to growing demands from the oppressed and marginalised castes led by Babasaheb Ambedkar, arranged for a number of castes, whose names were specified in a schedule (hence called ‘Scheduled Castes’), to be given reservations in government jobs and elected bodies. The Simon Commission drew up an official list of socially excluded castes and tribes in 1930 called the ‘Scheduled Castes’ (SC) and ‘Scheduled Tribes’ (ST). Scheduled means they are on a government schedule that entitles them to certain protection and affirmative action (or reservations). These castes had historically been treated as despised untouchables, considered by the wider society and the Hindu religion as subhuman or worse. They were not defined by any religious label and included a number of castes or sections whose ancestors had converted to various religions, such as Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Sikhism, in search of liberation from the shackles of caste. The converted Christians from Dalit communities are long fighting for their rights which get snatched from them once they get converted to Christianity. The dalits on conversion to Christianity lost their privilege of the reservation policy as they are not included in the scheduled castes.

Frauds, discrepancies, protests, salary denials mark a tumultuous
year
Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, December 25 Teacher transfers, protests, dharnas, teachers being overburdened by duties, failing of many water samples in the district and the considerable delay in the preparation of the DISE reports owing to the strike by the SSA/RMSA unions, along with angst among teachers for being deputed on duties on the atta dal scheme work, brought the year to a close. The delay in salaries and seniority and promotion anomalies saw some of the most intense protests this year. While the SSA/RMSA union protested for about one-and-a-half month from October mid to November, computer teachers also held big protests for the denial of regularisations and facilities on par with other teachers to them. Earlier in the year, during summers failing of over 20 samples in the district, followed by many other across schools, brought to fore the dismal arrangements and lack of sanitation at majority of the schools. Starting with 20, until later in the year, at least 45 samples had failed and many others yet remain unreported. The insanitary conditions of water and laxity by the authorities on the matter were also reflected in the diarrhea outbreaks which continued pretty late in the year. Meanwhile, the midday meal tragedy in Bihar shifted the spotlight on the state of the meal in the district too. Orders by the DPI (primary) to provide report of mid day meal anomalies were also issued to the DC. However, presently a number of government and aided-school midday meal frauds remain unchecked both by the DC and the education department. Meanwhile, in the thick of the winters, many school children lived devoid of proper uniforms because uniforms haven’t been distributed despite claims regarding grants for the same having been received. The administration also refused to hold any school staff accountable for the spraying of weedicides by a school student at the Government Senior Secondary School, Lasara. Meanwhile, thefts and incidents of crime were reported off and on from schools. In the year end, three school students were ousted from a school after they sprayed harmful chemicals. Towards the end of the year, the Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, laid the foundation stone of the much-awaited merit school. Laurels: Students of the district remained second in state in the Vigyan Exhibition held in November. Students of Bajwal Kalan GSSS stood first in state in quiz contest. INSPIRE awards saw three first prizes in state for district students who proceeded for nationals. |
