ender City hosted big sports events Nikhila Pant Dhawan Tribune News Service
Bathinda, December 20 The city earned the distinction of hosting the opening ceremony of the World Cup Kabaddi tournament for the third consecutive year. The Multipurpose Sports Stadium got a face lift, thanks to the tournament. Apart from becoming the hub of activities for over a month, it also got temporary electricity connection which had earlier been disconnected due to non-payment of the bill. Apart from the sporting action, the city also got a taste of controversy after a kabaddi player alleged that he had been discriminated against by the coach of the men's team and was left out of the team. While one woman player from the district made it to the kabaddi team, no player from the district could manage to even get selected for the training camp. The direct fallout of the stadium being earmarked for the kabaddi tournament was on the national-level competitions which were held in the city as part of the 59th National School Sports. Owing to the non-availability of the stadium, the Astroturf hockey stadium at the Government Rajindra College was chosen to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the tournament. St Xavier's School, Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Police Public School, Government Sports School, Ghudda, Malwa College of Physical Education, Government Rajindra Colleges, Giani Zail Singh PTU campus and Sports Authority of India Academy at Badal village were chosen as venues for conducting the boys and girls competitions in boxing, circle kabaddi, netball, basketball and hockey. As many as 2,200 students from 29 states and seven union territories of the country showcased their sporting prowess to win in various categories of five sports which were inaugurated by Education Minister of Punjab, Sikander Singh Maluka. The games torch was brought by players from Guru Nanak School in Civil Station to the stadium during the opening ceremony. Punjab lifted the overall trophy for the sporting events during the tournament by winning maximum number of positions. The boys' team from the state won the first place in the Under-17 hockey competition while its girls won the second position. Punjab players also won the first place in the Under-19 basketball and Under-19 netball competitions of both boys and girls. In the Under-19 circle kabaddi and Under-14 competitions, Punjab boys bagged the second places. The tournament was also mired in several controversies as several teams levelled cheating charges against Punjab teams and the organisers. While one of the referees for the final hockey match in the Under-17 boys' category between Punjab and Delhi staged a walkout midway, Punjab team's coach Gurinder Singh Sangha hit out at the National School Games Federation of India for sending "incompetent" referees for the match. Several teams participating in the kabaddi tournament also complained that they were kept in the dark over the change in weight category. They alleged that the authorities did not convey to the teams that the 70 kg category was changed to "open weight category" to retain some Punjab players in the team. |
