No technical glitches and no delay in the programme - unlike the opening ceremony of the 4th World Kabaddi Cup tournament, the organisation of which had been outsourced to a private firm, the district administration managed to conduct the semi-finals of the tournament quite well.

In the absence of any kind of glamour quotient, one would have thought that the kabaddi matches would not be able to command as huge a crowd as the opening ceremony did. But the audience not only came and filled the stands to capacity but also brought with them the Tricolour and banners to support the teams.

A musical performance by Punjabi singer Raj Tiwari kicked off the programme. Although Balkar Sidhu was scheduled to perform, Tiwari was a last minute change and he regaled the audience with his songs.

The first semi-final, played between the eves of Denmark and New Zealand set the evening rolling. As the girls overpowered each other in an attempt to gain a point, the frenzied crowd lauded loudly every move.

The final before the finals, a semi-final match between the women teams of Pakistan and India, was the one which brought out the hysterical euphoria of the audience. India's stopper Anu once again proved that big things may come in small packages.

At the presentation ceremony, Pakistan's captain Madiha Latif made the crowd cheer as she thanked India for giving her team the opportunity to come and participate in the tournament. She also stated that the team was all set to fight Denmark for the third place.

"The Indian girls may have overpowered us but we have also made a mark in the tournament by making it to the semi-finals in our maiden participation in the tournament. We also want to thank the Indian players and officials for treating us with so much warmth," she said.

Traffic travails

Aiming to keep the traffic flow smooth and to keep the area around the multipurpose sports stadium secure, the traffic police had barred several arterial roads leading to the stadium. The VVIP vehicles coming from Goniana and Gidderbaha took the Barnala bypass-Guru Gobind Singh Nagar route to reach the stadium.

Vehicles coming from Barnala Road took the Bibiwala Chowk-Guru Gobind Singh Nagar-Valmiki Chowk route to the stadium. Those coming from the Mansa-Dabwali road were directed via Police Lines-100 Feet road-Guru Gobind Singh Nagar route.

The traffic police also designated parking lots for public vehicles. These spots included Rose Garden Chowk, area outside the Improvement Trust Office, DAV College, Model Town Phase III and Jujhar Singh Nagar, among others.

Punjabi singer Raj TewariBathinda, December 11
Renowned Punjabi singer Balkar Sidhu today accused the organisers of the 4th World Cup Kabaddi of cheating him. Sidhu, who was scheduled to perform before the audience in Bathinda prior to the semi-final matches at the Multipurpose Sports Stadium, said he is yet to be paid for his performance at Tarn Taran.

He stated that he was invited to perform before the kabaddi matches held at Tarn Taran. "When I asked the organisers for the payment, one of the officials there asked me to cough up Rs 30,000 if I wanted my payment. Since I didn't agree to his demand, he threatened me saying he would make sure that my show in Bathinda on December 11 was cancelled," Sidhu said.

He added that on December 9, he received a call from the sports department, Bathinda, and he was told that his programme had been cancelled. "They said that taking cognisance of the winter chill, the Chief Minister had changed the schedule of the matches and that the semi-final matches will also be conducted in the morning-afternoon session.

Balkar SidhuThe organisers added that the CM had stated that there was no need for a cultural programme in the morning session," Sidhu said and added that he later got to know that the matches and the cultural programme were being conducted in the evening, as per the schedule.

Interestingly, till the evening before the semi-final matches, the officials of the Bathinda district administration kept nodding to the fact that Sidhu was to perform.

Stating that his name had been used to gather audience for the matches, Sidhu said, "My name has been misused. The officials circulated my name. They should have also disseminated information about the cancellation of my programme. This entire incident will harm my reputation."

Deputy Commissioner of Bathinda, Kamal Kishore Yadav, stated that the information regarding cancellation of Sidhu's programme was shared with him late on Tuesday evening. "Late on Tuesday evening, we got the information that Balkar Sidhu will not perform. At a short notice, another singer, Raj Tiwari, agreed to perform. Roping in artistes for the cultural programme is the prerogative of the sports department."

The Secretary, Local Government, Government of Punjab, submitted a detailed project report with the necessary amendments that the NGT had asked for. During the hearing, the principal bench of the NGT laid emphasis on lessening the residue that would be left behind after treating the garbage.

The NGT expressed its satisfaction over the proposal and asked the Punjab government officials as to which of the eight clusters can be taken up as a model cluster for the others to follow.

The officials replied that the Bathinda cluster could be taken up as a model as its planning was at an advanced stage than the others. Its site had already got environmental clearance and the company concerned, JITF Urban Waste Management Limited, is already collecting garbage and transporting it

The NGT bench directed the government to develop Bathinda as a model that the others can follow. The government will now start work to develop the Bathinda model at the earliest.
