TASTE BUDS
Beat winter with sizzling healthy soups
Megha Mann
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, December 15
Nothing beats winters like a bowl of piping hot chana soup. Add nutrition to it and the soup becomes the best nutritious serving for the winters.

The Lucky Burger Soup Corner - a makeshift soup and burger shop near the Gole Diggi petrol pump - is the right place to tickle your taste buds.

30-year-old Lucky, who has been running the soup corner for the past eight years, serves chana dal and mixed vegetable soups. Priced at Rs 30 each, the soups are available only in the evening, when Lucky puts up his shop at around 4:30 pm. “By 9 pm, my entire preparation is finished as it has become quite popular among customers, some of whom come on daily basis,” he says.

Lucky and his entire family, living near Gole Diggi, prepare the soup. Couple of years ago, his father used to serve dahi bhalla in Dhobi Bazar area. As his father aged, Lucky took over the business.

His father buys the vegetables, while two workers and family members chop and cook. To thicken the soups, corn flour is added to it. “Some people add corn starch to the soups which ends up upsetting digestion of the consumers. We don’t compromise on quality. No artificial flavour is used,” he says.

In addition to chana and mixed-vegetable soups, Lucky also serves burgers, which are also a part of his summer preparations. The four winter months from November to February see Lucky engrossed in making maximum profit, while the rest of year is spent living on the money earned in this period. “I tried with dahi bhalla and ice-cream selling in summers, but just could not do it. My heart lies in preparing soup and it is the best I could do,” adds Lucky.

Lucky dreams of having a restaurant serving only soups of different kind. “But I can experiment only when I have enough money. As of now, I think of finding a way to sustain my family throughout the year,” he adds.
