664 girl students get bicycles
: As many as 664 girl students got bicycles at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sirhind on Tuesday. Deputy Commissioner Arun Sekhri said the district administration would distribute bicycles to 3,929 girls studying in plus one and plus two classes under the state government’s Mai Bhago Scheme.

270 people examined for free at eye camp
: Over 270 patients were examined at a free eye camp organised at Jain Upasara on Tuesday. A team of eye specialists also performed 40 operations free of cost. Civil Surgeon Dr Dharam Pal inaugurated the event. Free medicines were also provided to needy patients.

Man killed, son hurt in road accident
: A man died and his son got hurt when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a Verna car near Naushehra Pannuan village on Monday. The deceased, Sakattar Singh (55), was a resident of Meerankot village in Amritsar. His son Simranjit Singh was admitted to the local civil hospital. The accused fled from the spot. A case has been registered, said police sources.

NRI husband among 3 booked in dowry case: An NRI and two members of his family were booked for torturing a woman for dowry. The accused have been identified as Vishal Julka, his father Jagdish Chander and brother Kusham Julka, residents of Mata Kaulan Devi Mandir Colony here. The victim, Kanika Arora, alleged Vishal began to harass her with demands of dowry soon after they tied the knot in 2011.

Khushpreet's uncle statement cross-examined: A local court today cross examined the statement of the uncle of five-year-old Khushpreet Singh, who was kidnapped and murdered two years ago. Khushpreet's uncle Sukhwinder Singh had earlier recorded his statement on December 21 and 22, 2011. The cross-examination will continue in the next hearing of the case on January 8, 2014. 

Bank denies giving car to any official: The bank referred to in a Reporters Diary piece 'Car for bank accounts' published in these columns on December 9, 2013, has clarified that it never gifted any car to any official. The police department had followed an elaborate procedure to shift the accounts of the officials to the bank.

Property tax date extended
: The government has decided to extend the period to avail one-time rebate on property tax dues up to December 31. This was stated by Haryana Urban Local Bodies Minister Savitri Jindal here today. She said keeping in view the interest of the people, it had been decided that one-time rebate on the payment of property tax dues would be extended up to December 31, which was earlier valid till December 10.

Poppy husk seized
: The police today arrested two persons allegedly involved in smuggling drugs from UP to Haryana and seized 200 kg of poppy husk from them. Harpreet and Gulab of Prithvi Vihar have been booked under the NDPS Act.

153 examined at medical camp
: The district police today organised a free medical camp under the Civic Action Programme at Government Higher Secondary School, Bandara, in the Kuntwara area of Kishtwar. As many as 153 persons were examined at the camp.
