Chandigarh, December 10
Terming it as a “heavy sentence”, Lt General KS Brar (retd) said the convicts “got what they deserved”.

“It is a very good thing and they have got what they deserved. The United Kingdom has proved that they do not tolerate terrorism; that they are very strict against terrorists; and that they are very strong in their resolve against terrorism,” he told The Tribune over the telephone from Mumbai, when asked for his reaction. Lt General Brar said he had received a phone call from the London Metropolitan Police immediately after the sentencing was announced. “They told me the courtroom was jam-packed with Sikhs with many more present outside. This indicates that that there is likely to be more pressure on me in the times ahead,” he said pointing to how sympathisers of terrorists were building monuments with the encouragement of some political parties.

Praising the UK’s judicial system wherein the police investigation, the arrest of the convicts, the chargesheeting, conviction and sentencing had all been completed in a little over one year, Lt General Brar said, “India needs to take a leaf out of this. We are lax about terrorism.”
