Poll violence: Two cops injured in stone-pelting
New Delhi, December 4 They were also allegedly involved in stone-pelting that injured two senior police officers. Ritu said that the police should take immediate action against the people who allegedly attacked her father, Keval Bohra. According to the police, the injured police officers have been identified as Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police-I (West District) Ved Prakash Surya and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Tilak Nagar) Vinit Kumar. The police said that two days ago, Ritu Bohra and her father, Keval Bohra, were campaigning for Rajiv Babbar, the BJP candidate for the Tilak Nagar constituency. There was a fight between Keval and one, Bachindra Singh, over a petty issue. Later, Bachindra with his friends allegedly attacked Keval, who suffered serious injuries. He has been hospitalised. Ritu lodged a complaint at the Tilak Nagar police station on the same day. Today, she and her supporters gathered outside the police station and staged a demonstration. They demanded that the police should take action against Bachindra and his supporters. On the other hand, the police said that they are investigating the case, but they had to first focus on the elections. They asserted that the investigation would continue after the polling ended in the evening today. Ved Prakash and Vineet Kumar along with other police personnel reached the site of the protest and tried to pacify the crowd, who was resorting to stone-pelting. The two officers were injured. Later, the police managed to pacify the crowd and open the traffic movement that had been stopped on a road leading to Rajouri Garden. The police have registered a case in regard to the protest. |
Many voters found their names missing
New Delhi, December 4 Talha Malik, a resident of Abul Fazal Enclave, said that she had been voting for the last three times but today when "I tried to find out voting slip for exercising my franchise, my name was missing from the list. I have been living at same address for the last 15 years but I do not know how my name has been deleted," she said. Chandra Singh, Ram Kumar, Sushila Devi at Gole Market polling station in New Delhi constituency made complaints that they had election cards but their names did not exist on the list. When asked who could have deleted their names, the voters said that they did not know. Residents of constituencies of East and North East districts felt "harassed" as they had to run from one registration desk to another at different polling booths in search of their names. Naseem and his wife Smina from Krishna Nagar were disappointed at not being able to cast their votes. They spent more than three hours searching their names since they reached the polling station at 8.40 am. BJP chief ministerial candidate Dr Harsh Vardhan contested from Krishna Nagar. Residents of the Muslim-dominated areas like Brajpuri and Khureji Khas in Krishna Nagar constituency were annoyed and had heated arguments with poll duty officials for not being allowed to vote. The same issues were faced by the residents of Gandhi Nagar, Kondli, Patparganj and Trilokpuri. Chief Electoral Officer said that the election office has issued advertisements in media to inform the electorate to get their name checked on the voting list. If it is not found there, they could have got it included. Sufficient time was given to them. It is the duty of the electorate to get their names included on the list. |
Minority votes divided in Okhla
New Delhi, December 4 The four minority contenders are Asif Mohammad Khan of Congress party and sitting MLA, Shoaib Danish of JDU, Amantullah Khan of Lok Jan Shakti and Irfanullah Khan of AAP. The area of minority community consists of Jamia Nagar, Noor Nagar, Zakir Nagar, Okhla Vihar, Batla House, Okhla village Abul Fazal Enclave and Shaheen Bagh. A section of Muslims who belongs to the Aligarh group was seen preferring the AAP candidate. BJP's candidate Dheer Singh Chaudhary was seen strong in Sarita Vihar blocks where he may get a good number of votes but in other non-Muslim areas like Jasola village, Jasola Vihar, group housing societies, Madanpur Khadar, Madanpur Khadar Extension, Aali Village, Nai Basti in Ojkhla village and Khizrabad, the voter's mood was in favour of the BSP candidate, Braham Singh. In the last assembly election, the BSP candidate was in the second position. In these areas, low voters turnout was seen till 10 am. Soon after a rush of voters was seen collecting slips from the tables erected outside the polling stations. The maximum rush was seen on JDU, Congress and BSP tables. |
Marwah set to be elected for fourth time in Jangpura
New Delhi, December 4 It is his accessibility and prompt response that makes him a favourite among the locals in the area as against BJP's Pankaj Jain, who is an outsider, even as there are a few disgruntled residents who blamed the Congress at the Centre behind the anti-incumbency. "Here the Congress has performed, but the Central Government has failed. Prices of day-to-day commodities have shot up and power bill too has doubled spoiling the budget of people. People who are upset due to inflation will obviously vote for a change," said a resident of Jangpura Extension, Raj Kumar, who had come to the area's primary school with his two daughters to cast his vote. However, in the Jangpura constituency predominantly comprising the Sikh and business community, Marwah enjoys a wide support and stands on a strong ground in comparison to his opponents, including the BJP candidate. Another resident Bhupender Arora, who runs a furniture business, said, "Marwah is a local resident of Bhogal And has always been available for people while Pankaj Jain lives in Daryaganj. “The Aam Adami Party (AAP) has not been that visible here though youngsters look inclined towards it and it is expected that it may secure a good chunk of votes." There are also voters who in turn look to be pinning their hopes on Maninder Singh Dhir who is contesting on the AAP's symbol. "The area is seeing a tough contest between the three candidates and we are looking for change," said HR consultant Ruchi who was accompanied by her husband and mother-in-law Swarnakanta. Similarly, a first-timer and BCom final year student Supriya Bharti, who lives on Church Road in the Jangpura Extension area, asserted, "We should use our vote to bring the change we want." But another first-timer Guarav Dass, a resident of Church Campus, is a staunch supporter of the Congress party and said Marwah is clearly his choice. |
Triangular battle in Kasturba Nagar, Patparganj
New Delhi, December 4 Voters in both the constituencies largely have expressed a strong anti-incumbency feeling and voted for a change, or so In Kasturba Nagar constituency, the contest is between Congress's sitting MLA Neeraj Basoya, BJP's Shikha Rai and Aam Aadmi Party's candidate Madan Lal while Patparganj assembly constituency headed towards a three-cornered battle where the old opponents of the traditional rival parties-Congress's sitting MLA Anil Chaudhary and BJP's Nakul Bhardwaj are up for a fight once again this time and giving them a formidable challenge is the Aam Aadmi Party's Manish Sisodia. According to Arjun Kasturia, a resident of B Block Amar Colony, people in his area are voting for AAP due to the clean image of Arvind Kejriwal. "Though we have been a supporter of BJP we want AAP to come and Congress is surely not coming again," he said. Another Mohd Kalam, who resides in Ramesh Market, quipped, "I and nearly 50 of my friends and known people will vote for broom which will clean the dirty system." Agreeing with him was another first-time voter 18-year-old Varun in Lajpat Nagar IV. He said, "AAP looks strong and honest so I and my friends are supporting it." However, residents of Jangpura Extension Anil Kumar Rana and Rajesh Arora of Amar Colony said, "A wave of BJP has taken over in Kasturba Nagar and entire Delhi. Last time, Congress won it but BJP is going to snatch it this time." His reaction to AAP's prospects was, "Anna has been critical about AAP and distanced himself from Arvind Kejriwal. Then how can people support the party." However, his family is again a divided house with many of the members supporting AAP. In Patparganj, both the Congress and BJP candidates- active student leaders-are considerably popular in the area which comprises group housing societies and slum settlements, the AAP candidate Manish (41) has emerged as a likable choice, especially among young voters. |
