Two persons, including a national-level javelin thrower, were killed when an auto-rickshaw was crushed between a Haryana Roadways bus and a tempo in the Mandir Marg area, central Delhi, this afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as 20-year-old Abhishek and the auto-rickshaw driver, Jasvinder (60). Abhishek was a national-level javelin thrower. According to the police, Abhishek's friend Brijesh (20) and a motorcyclist were also injured. Brijesh is a national-level hammer thrower.

"Abhishek and Brijesh, both students of a government college in Bhiwani, Haryana, had hired the auto-rickshaw at Vande Materam Road near Mandir Marg at 2.15 pm," a police officer said.

The tempo rammed into the auto-rickshaw. The auto-rickshaw crushed between the bus and the tempo.

BJP takes dig at Cong’s election slogan
Says ruling party has experience of scams
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 28
Criticizing the Congress's slogan for electioneering as it seeks a fourth consecutive term in Delhi, the BJP today said the ruling party had only the "experience of scams" and the pace under it was of "galloping crime".

"The Congress says 'Anubhav hai, raftar hai'... I tell you it is right, because they have an experience of scams ('Anubhav hai ghotalon ka') and have seen crime growing apace ('Raftar hai aparadhon ki')," senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said today.

Led by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, the Congress is wooing the masses this time with their slogan 'Anubhav hai, raftar hai, Congress phir iss bar hai (There is experience, there is pace; It is going to be Congress again)".

Slamming Dikshit for "asking women to stay indoors" after dark, Swaraj said, "These women who work at call centres at night, they do not go there out of choice but to earn a living. It would have been better had Dikshit provided them with vehicles and security guards instead of asking them to stay indoors".

"The state government and the Centre both have experience of so many scams like the big CWG scam, huge 2G spectrum scam and the mammoth coal scam. And, crimes have risen at such speed in the city. After the December 16 gangrape, crimes against women still continue unchecked," Swaraj said.

Swaraj attended rallies in multiple constituencies, including Model Town, Sadar Bazar, Chandni Chowk, Najafgarh, Matia Mahal. Addressing a gathering of traders at Kamla Nagar market in Model Town, she asked for their votes as a "bohni for the BJP". "In your trade parlance you call your first sale 'bohni'. So, be our first voters and do the 'bohni' for us," she added.

Meanwhile, at a rally last night at Chirag Delhi in the Greater Kailash constituency, the BJP sought to puncture the Congress claim of Delhi being a "world-class" city. "Delhi has become a capital of rapes and the dirty Yamuna. Yet, the Congress calls it one of the best capital cities," senior BJP leader VK Malhotra had told the gathering.

BJP hand in glove with hoarders, says Dikshit
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 28
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today continued the election campaign of her party and addressed the large gatherings in north-east district, saying that the BJP has been encouraging the traders in effecting inflationary trend with an aim to grab power at any cost.

"The BJP has been facilitating the inflationary trend by inciting the traders to go for hoarding and profiteering and publicizing the inflated prices. The publicizing of prices prominently is resulting in further hike in the prices of the vegetables and other items, putting unnecessary burden on the poor," said Dikshit.

She stated that the Congress took steps of market intervention to bring the prices at reasonable level whereas the BJP deployed its mobile vans at few places against 400 places selected by the government.

"The BJP did just theatrics without having any sympathies with the common man. The prices of the vegetables fluctuate with the change of seasons. No party has any right to exploit hike in the prices for its political purposes as the rates are destined to come down in few weeks time," she said.

Dikshit also added that the Congress took steps in curbing inflation in the prices whereas as the BJP governments remained the mute spectator, the inflationary trend is visible across the country. She was expressing views at public rallies in the Seemapuri, Gokulpuri and the Mustafabad assembly segments.

She said that her party has been getting good response from all sections of society as people recognize the positive change in the city brought by our government during the past 15 years. The Congress would continue to develop Delhi by ensuring the modern infrastructure across the city.

Shahdara: A tough battleground for Cong this time
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 28
The Congress has never lost the seat of the Shahdara Assembly Constituency in east Delhi for the past 15 years, which now seems to be slipping out of its hands going by the depleting margin of votes between the two major rivals, the BJP and the Congress.

A strong Congress bastion, Shahdara is represented by three-time Member of Legislative Assembly Dr Narender Nath. The constituency has proven as one of the tough battle grounds for the BJP which handed over the seat to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Badal in the 2003 and 2008 assembly elections as per their alliance after losing it with heavy margin in the 1998 assembly elections. Even the delimitation before the 2008 assembly elections leading to could not manage to loosen the hold of the Congress in Shahdara.

However, the Congress seems to have lost a great deposit of its vote bank in the constituency as suggested by the figures of municipal elections. In the 2012 civic body elections, the Congress could not manage to get even a single seat out the total four, three of which went to the BJP and one to independent.

The shrinking of the Congress votes in the area is also evident from the fact that the margins of votes between the Congress and the SAD (Badal) which was over 13,000 votes in the 2003 assembly elections, reduced to mere 2,000 approximately in the 2008 elections, mainly for the increasing presence of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) which won more than 8,000 votes. If the BSP, which is likely to eat upon a good margin of the Congress votes this time as well, pulls out heavy support in the upcoming elections, the Congress will easily lose the seat to the BJP.

The constituency with a mixed population has an electorate population of 1.53 lakhs. The SAD (Badal) has fielded Jitender Singh Shunty for the constituency and Bhim Singh is the BSP candidate. The introduction of the Aam Admi Party has also played a spoilsport for the Congress.

In the 2008 elections, three-time MLA Narender Nath had got 39,194 votes and SAD's Shunty had bagged 37,658, while the BSP had opened account with 8,104 votes.

The area is grappling under a series of serious issues like supply of contaminated water, clogged sewages, bad condition of roads, non-desilting of drains, etc.

"The area MLA is also the chairman of the Trans-Yamuna Development Board for the past 13 years which has an annual budget of Rs 100 crore, still no development has taken place here," said Shunty.

IGI Airport Security
CCTV cameras to be installed at sensitive locations

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 28
As a new layer of security adopted from foreign airports will be setup at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and the areas around it, the security agencies will use it to keep a close watch on 15 sensitive locations.

According to the security plan, about 60-70 CCTV cameras will be installed in these locations, which are entry and exit points to the airport, important passages, u-turns and areas where there is massive public movement.

The idea for implementing such a security plan came to light when a joint team of the Delhi Police, the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the two agencies responsible for the security of the IGI Airport, went abroad in March this year. When they returned to Delhi, there were discussions on the security arrangements of airports abroad and the IGI Airport.

"The Ministry of Civil Aviation decided to adopt the security setup of San Diego and Amsterdam airports for the IGI Airport," said high-level sources in the security establishment.

In June, the IGI Airport operator, DIAL, BCAS and the Ministry of Home Affairs, were intimated about the plan, which was formed with the initiative taken from the Delhi Police.

The sources explained that according to the plan some of the locations where the CCTV cameras will be installed include Central Spine Road, the public transport near Centaur Hotel, Cargo Terminal of the airport and the customs house, which are all located near the airport. These are locations where there are important entry and exit points to the airport and where there is also heavy footfall of people.
