World Cup Kabaddi: Security lapse inside hotel
Jalandhar, December 2 Presently, Hotel Ramada and Hotel Maya are accommodating six men's teams from Scotland, England, Denmark, Pakistan, Canada and Sierra Leonne. Three teams are staying at Hotel Ramada and the other three are staying at Hotel Maya. The hotels have alleged that although they are providing full support to the district administration for smooth running of the tournament, they are facing a lot of difficulty due to lack of coordination among various government departments. "The hotels are suffering huge losses due to this. First, the administration has not increased the previous year's rate. We are providing accommodation inclusive of all three meals at just Rs 3,800 plus 18.79 per cent taxes, whereas the actual room rent with complementary buffet comes out to be between Rs 6,000 to Rs 9,000," said a source from the Accounts Department of one of the hotels. The sources have also revealed that since hotels have to pay sales tax at the end of every month, they have requested the administration to pay them some advance money. "The tax alone for these rooms will come out to be between Rs 4 and 5 lakh which will be almost half the total amount we will receive from the administration," said one of the hotel officials. Also, due to recent controversies, some international teams are under the consistent vigil of the police and the CID. This is also causing a lot of problem to the regular clients. "I got married two days ago in the same hotel. My family booked a room for two days for us to enjoy privacy, but here it was a different experience all together. It was like getting married in a police station with men in uniform moving all around looking suspiciously at us," said Kamaljit Kaur (name changed). The sources also informed that on the check-in day of the players, the police checked the luggage of all guests, including women, in the lobby area. "It was only when we reported the matter to senior officials that this practice was put to an end," said one of the source. Hotel officials have also alleged that due to careless planning by the Police Department, there is a complete security lapse inside the hotel premises. Shockingly, the department has not pinpointed the exact duties of the security staff at these hotels. Also, exact duty timings have not been given to the police personnel. On this reporter's visit to Hotel Maya, where the Pakistan team is staying, only one policeman was found with an LMG gun. On being asked, the policeman replied that the rest of the Quick reaction Team (QRT) staff have gone out for lunch. Surprisingly, when the administration has made abundant arrangements to provide a high-protein diet, including meat and fish to the players, the Police Department forgets to allocate even proper meal timings to policemen who are consistently on the vigil. "Since, all policemen deployed here are local, there is no need to made arrangements for their food. We have allocated their shifts in such a way that they can go back home and have food," said Rahul S, Deputy Commissioner of Police. But the police seem to have failed to allocate shifts efficiently. |
Manmohan Waaris to perform at Women’s Kabaddi final
Jalandhar, December 2 The Deputy Commissioner, Varun Roojam, on Monday visited the stadium and checked the arrangements for the Kabaddi World Cup matches. He instructed all departments concerned to have proper coordination for smooth running of the tournament. He has also urged all city youth to come and witness exciting kabaddi matches to be played on 12th of December in the city. The DC has also directed the District Education Department to create awareness in all educational institutes including schools and colleges about the matches. “It is our consistent endeavour to promote all types of sports amongst the youth. In this Kabaddi World Cup, three matches including the Women’s final is slated to take place in the city. We spent so much money to organise such a tournament just to attract the youth to the game. They should come and enjoy the passion in the game,” said Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar. Although the district administration is trying hard to attract the youth to the game, it has still not made any arrangements for the girl students who are studying in government schools and who would not be able to witness the games in the absence of any transport facility provided by their respective schools. Moreover, because of the ongoing exams in degree colleges, many students may miss the action of the Kabaddi World cup. |
1,350 apply for atta-dal scheme on day one
Jalandhar, December 2 While the process of receiving applications had started on November 25, only 500 forms had been received till yesterday. Today's rush was unexpected by the administration and long queues for the purpose were witnessed all day through at counter number 2 of the centre. Applicants had come to submit their files bearing their self-declaration forms and copies of ration card and Aadhaar Cards of the entire family. Even as the offices of the SDMs concerned and sub-tehsil offices have also been made collection points for the applications, the rush remained concentrated at the Suwidha Centre. This made the applicants wait for a longer time in their queues for submission of their applications. Women remained present in large numbers since they are the principal applicants from their family in the new scheme. Hardeep Singh, a resident of Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar, said it was a harrowing experience to wait for so long to simply get a file deposited. "The administration should have at least made the process a little organised by adding more counters," he said. Since the forms are to be accepted till December 16 and the administration expects more rush in coming days, the officials are now planning to improve arrangements. Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam said drop boxes would be made available at the Suwidha Centre so that applicants could just put in their complete files which would be moved on to the concerned SDMs for processing. Abduction drama unfolds, complainants booked
Jalandhar, December 2 The police today arrested Rakesh Kumar alias Kala and produced him in the court of the Duty Magistrate SK Goyal who sent him to a judicial remand. The police also booked his wife Kanchan and relatives Bal Kishan Bali and Shashi Sharma, who allegedly played a role in his abduction and murder drama. The other three involved in the case have so far managed to evade arrest. The four have been booked under Sections 420, 120-B, 182 and 193 of the IPC, Section 66 of the Police Act and Sections 9 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Division Number 5 police station. ACP West Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu said he had received information that Rakesh had been hiding at his sister’s place in Faridabad, but he had eloped from there as well. He said, “We then nabbed him with his uncle in the town.” The police have also initiated the process for the cancellation of the FIR No. 219 registered on October 19 under Sections 364, 385, 120-B of the IPC at the same police station against Jolly, Ankit, Mahinder Singh, Tarun and others. Two arrests had also been made so far. Rakesh’s wife had even moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had asked the city police to file a status report by December 7. A special investigation team had also been constituted on the matter comprising ADCP (Crime) Harpreet Singh Mander, ACP (Special Branch) Som Nath and Economic Offences Wing Incharge Inspector Arminder Singh. The family had been raising a lot of hue and cry on the issue. Raksh's wife and two sons, had taken out a march to the office of the Commissioner of Police last month levelling allegations against ACP (West) Ravinder Pal Sandhu of colluding with abductors. They had sought his removal from a public dealing post. Rakesh’s wife had given a memorandum to the Police Commissioner according to which earlier accused, including Ankit, Jolly and others, had come to her place on September 27 and made her talk to her husband. She said, “My husband told me that he had lost a good amount in cricket betting, which these people had calculated to Rs 1.25 crore with interest. He told me to handover the documents of their two houses, shop, new Maruti Ertiga car, bike or any other valuables to them for his release.” She alleged that a 32-inch LCD TV was forcibly taken away from her place that day. Statement of the accused
Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul S said
Rakesh, who had his surgical goods business at Jaina Nagar, has confessed that he had taken Rs 46 lakh from several people in the market and the outstanding against him had gone far too high with added interest. He said people had been after him seeking recovery of their money and he was upset. Rakesh said he shared his problem with his relatives Shashi Sharma and Bal Kishan Bali, who advised him to go underground for two-three months. He said he had kept his wife in loop when he left for Delhi. After some days his wife informed him on phone that she and the other two accused had got a case registered against five-six persons, not even known to him. Since Rakesh wanted to be back, his two relatives, who had earlier taken Rs 50,000 for lodging a case, were seeking Rs 2.5 lakh for the withdrawal of the case. His wife said she had earlier arranged Rs 50,000 from
neighbourers. |

Weedicide issue: Enquiry absolves school authorities of any wrongdoing
Jalandhar, December 2 The Deputy Commissioner (DC) had sought the enquiry report from the District Education Officer (DEO), which had absolved the school authorities of any guilt on the given matter. Talking to The Tribune, Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam said the school authorities, as well as the panchayat members had met him regarding the issue. They blamed the internal politics within the school for the incident, rather than acknowledging any lapse on the part of the authorities, he added. The DC said, “The authorities believe that the incident was an attempt to create problems in the school. They have alleged that one of the school staff members had forcibly clicked pictures of the said student 10 days before the incident took place. The school has never employed students for the above said task. The DEO has backed the village panchayat’s opinion.” DEO Neelam Kumari said, “With the first enquiry, the conclusion was drawn that the boy was forcibly made to wear the mask. The DEO office has, however, marked a second enquiry into the issue in which a staff member has levelled additional charges against the school regarding fund misuse in some construction work. The second issue is being looked into.” |
