5 members of contract killers’ gang held
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, November 25
The city police claims to have nabbed five members of a Ferozepure-based gang of contract killers for shooting at a city based industrialist in the posh Urban Estate Phase-II market on Wednesday. The other members of the gang are at large.

ADCP, PS Bhandal, briefing mediapersons here today, said acting on the complaint of Karanvir Singh, a resident of the Cool Road area, who had a miraculous escape in the firing incident, and after going through the CCTV footage, the police had launched a hunt for the assailants.

The police, however, succeeded in trapping the assailants - Sandeep Singh, Harmandeep Singh and Mangal Singh, while they were travelling in a Tata Xlon (PB1-ED-2595) - at a naka near White Diamond, a marriage palace.

During their interrogation, the trio made startling revelations, saying they had taken a contract from Parshotam Kumar, alias Lai, and Jasvir Singh, residents of Bajrawar village near Chabbewal in Hoshiarpur, to kill a Norway based NRI Bikramvir Singh, a brother of Karanvir Singh, the complainant.

The ADCP said during interrogation, the police also came to know that Bikramvir Singh’s father-in-law Daljit Singh, a resident of Bajrawar village and who runs a garden centre in Norway, had asked his close associates -Parshotam Kumar and Jasvir Singh - to eliminate his son-in-law.

Bikramvir Singh and his wife were not having cordial relations, which prompted Daljit Singh to hatch the conspiracy, the ADCP added.

As Bikramvir Singh reached Jalandhar on November 1, Lali and his associates hired Gurjant Singh, Sandeep Singh, Mangal Singh, Harmandeep Singh, Gurnam Singh and some others to eliminate Bikramvir Singh. The five were arrested when they were on their way to get the contract money of Rs 1,40,000.

The armed killers entered the busy market on Wednesday and barged into the office of Karanvir Singh located on the third floor of the building and opened fire at him, but a vigilant Karanvir Singh picked up a chair and threw it at the assailants, escaping unhurt. Their movement was, however, recorded in the CCTV cameras installed in the building, which provided a vital lead to the police in solving the crime.

The police registered a case under Sections 307, 115 and 120-B of the IPC and Arms Act on the complaint of the victim at the Division No. 7 police station.

Deposit property tax from home
 Civic body starts online facility
Dharmendra Joshi
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, November 25
Residents can now deposit property tax while sitting at home due to the online facility provided by the Municipal Corporation (MC) Jalandhar for depositing the same.

Stating this, MC Commissioner Manpreet Singh Chhatwal said, "The online facility for depositing property tax is now available for the convenience of the general public."

The online facility is available on the website www.mcjalandhar.in and at www.mcjpropertytax.in.

Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, Chhatwal said, "It is very easy for the residents to deposit property tax using this facility. One may see collector rate of his area on the website and may do self-assessment for depositing property tax while seeing the block. Subsequently, after depositing property tax through debit/credit card through this online facility, one may also get receipt for the same."

Interestingly, the facility has evoked good response on the first day on Monday. As many as 150 residents used the online system for self-assessment and deposited Rs 1,30,394 through debit/credit cards using the online system.

Meanwhile, urging the residents to deposit property tax by November 30 to avail 10 percent relaxation from the total amount, Chhatwal said the facility of depositing property tax personally would also continue uninterruptedly in all six zones of the MC and at all city branches of the HDFC.

To a query, the MC Commissioner said the online facility would not only help the general public to deposit property tax while sitting at their homes or offices, it would also ease overcrowding at the MC offices for depositing the same.

Wrong info about dispensaries on website

While residents are appreciating the Municipal Corporation (MC) officials for providing the online facility for depositing property tax, wrong information regarding health facilities is provided on its office website.

When one goes to the official website of the MC www.mcjalandhar.in and clicks about departments slug and subsequently goes to the health and sanitation department, it shows wrong information that as many as 14 ayurvedic dispensaries and a maternity hospital were being run in different parts of the city by the MC.

In fact, the maternity hospital, being run by the MC, was closed down over a decade ago and four out of 14 ayurvedic dispensaries were also closed down.

The website provides wrong information to residents that the general and maternity hospital is being still run at Model Town and that the four dispensaries are still run at Kot Pakshia, Bazar Naurian, Kishan Pura and Madan Flour Mill chowk. In fact, they were closed down.

MC systems manager Rajesh Sharma said the website would soon be updated and the wrong information would be deleted soon.

Interestingly, currently only 10 ayurveda dispensaries are being run at Bhargo Camp, Model House, Basti Sheikh, Basti Mithu, Abadpura, Centre Town, Bhagat Singh Chowk, Preet Nagar on Sodal road, Santokh Pura and Chuggitti. Now the MC is planning to close down five more dispensaries due to the "shortage of doctors". However, it has yet to be finalised, which five of the 10 dispensaries will be closed down.

The Speaker was in the city for the inauguration of a free eye camp, organised by his close associate. While the Speaker remained busy with the organisers and their men, the motorists were inconvenienced, as their vehicles moved at a snail’s pace.

Though the city police had deployed additional police force for the convenience of the VIP, there were hardly any arrangement for the smooth regulation of heavy traffic on this congested road.

The visitors, patients and their attendants, who descended on the venue, further added to the traffic chaos.

Surinder Kumar, a local resident, said the police authorities should have deployed cops for traffic regulation rather for the VIP’s convenience.

Apart from this, the process of making the database of all autos in Jalandhar will be undertaken by the Jalandhar Traffic police in coordination with the office of the District Transport Officer. It has also been decided that from February next year, without documents no auto would be allowed to ply on road.

Confirming the same, Jalandhar Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh said to begin with, they had decided that each and every auto would have to display the numbers of the traffic helpline, women helpline, police control room and driver on the vehicle. "Necessary instructions in this regard to the auto-rickshaw owners/drivers will be issued in a day or two and the deadline for the same will be two to three weeks period," he said. It may be mentioned here that Ishwar had taken a similar initiative in Ludhiana during his tenure as Police Commissioner.

Meanwhile, in order to regulate the auto-rickshaws in the city, the Jalandhar police have also decided to prepare a database of all autos. "In coordination with the DTO, the traffic police would prepare a data of all autos in the city, which will include the information of the owner and driver. Though it would be a hectic exercise, we are committed to collecting the data of autos. From February 1 next year, no auto would be allowed to ply on road without having proper documents," said Ishwar.

Police authorities are also contemplating to issue a unique number and hologram to every auto, so that they can be easily identified in case of any crime. "The auto-rickshaw drivers would also be issued character certificates after proper police verification. We are hopeful that these steps would be good enough to make sure that no one commuting in the auto has to face any kind of harassment. Also, the same would minimise the chances of any criminal activity by the auto drivers," concluded the Police Commissioner.
