Punish rapists This refers to the charge of sexual harassment and molestation against Tarun Tejpal, Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka, an investigative magazine. The media has started playing an active and influential role by projecting incidents like this and the Nirbhay case of December 16, 2012. It is appreciated by the public. If media stalwarts sexually harass their juniors by taking advantage of their position, it is criminal, shameful and unpardonable. Such people should be severely punished so that it becomes an example for others to not to indulge again in such shameful acts. ML Gupta, Parwanoo Build kids’ character This is with reference to the editorial “Nurturing grant” (November 11). Childhood is the foundation of one’s career. Only properly trained children can be builders of tomorrow. Love for hard work and discipline should be inculcated among them. Steps should be taken to create a close relationship among teachers, parents and children. Some parents do not play their part in the character-building of their children. Unfortunately, they get lost in the materialistic world and have no time to deal with the problem of their wards. Vipasha Sharma, Dhariwal More lok adalats needed The lok adalats achieved a record of sorts by disposing of 35.1 lakh cases in eight hours recently. Against the fact that 16,000-odd trial courts, 21 high courts and the Supreme Court are battling to give justice to the people in three crore pending cases, the settlement of cases, specially on small matters like traffic violations, leaves both parties happy both in heart and pocket. This drive should be held regularly to reduce the load on courts and waiting periods for the victims. Quick resolution of cases is more useful to a victim than justice received years later. Opinion polls okay Banning opinion polls is against the fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by the Constitution. Opinion polls are an expression of groups of voters. If done in the true spirit, they can play an important role in a democracy. Instead of banning opinion polls, some norms and guidelines should be made for conducting these polls. Ranjit K.Chandan, Balachaur Fill dairy posts As many as 50 per cent posts in the Dairy Development Department of Punjab are lying vacant for a long. time. Two batches of dairy technologists are out after training from GADVASU, Ludhiana. A college of dairy technology was set up by the government with a huge amount in the university in 2008. Milkfed, a department of Punjab, also has a similar situation. The ministry concerned should come forward to help the unemployed youth as well as the department. Sarbjit Singh Heran, Jagraon Non-Haryanvi brides I read the news item “50% bridegrooms in Haryana have non-Haryanvi brides” with keen interest (November 27). My mom belonged to a Hindu-Gurkha family and father was a Jat Sikh. I have love for both the Hindu and the Sikh religions. Nehru wrote in the ‘Discovery of India’: “The marriages between the Muslim kings and the Hindu girls enhanced the cause of cultural unity in India.” In the Western countries, people proudly say, “My father was a Briton and mom a German.” Unfortunately, we in India feel ashamed of such things Stinder Kaur, Griffith (Australia) Health insurance The Punjab government is to be appreciated for showing concern for the people’s healthcare as it has insured all in BPL category for Rs 30,000 per year. The government should make it mandatory for all private hospitals to entertain all those covered under the insurance scheme. It must keep an eye on private hospitals because they are in habit of preparing inflated medicals bills to the insured category because they are considered unwanted. It is my personal experience of nearly 30 years in this profession. Well done, but keep vigil. Dr Naresh Raj, Patiala
