Patiala, November 12
A case of alleged police brutality has come to light with the death of a 32-year-old Malerkotla resident at the Government Rajindra Hospital late last night.

Manish, a dairy owner, was allegedly subjected to third-degree torture, including use of electric current on his private parts and forced to urinate on an electric heater, by the Sangrur police in a narcotics case over 10 days ago. The victim, who was lodged in the Patiala Central Jail after being remanded in judicial custody, was brought to the intensive care unit of the hospital on November 4 after his condition deteriorated.

The victim’s family today raised slogans against the Punjab Police and demanded action against the policemen allegedly responsible for Manish’s death. The postmortem examination was performed in the presence of the Duty Magistrate at the hospital mortuary.

The family alleged that the Malerkotla city police had picked up Manish from his house on October 28 following an FIR registered under the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Manish was taken to the Malerkotla jail the next day and was subsequently shifted to the drug-addiction centre of the Patiala Central Jail on medical grounds.

Victim’s brother Lucky Kumar alleged that Manish was framed by the police in a false recovery case and was subjected to third-degree torture during interrogation at the Ladha Kothi of the CIA Staff on the Sangrur-Dhuri road.

“While Ashu Kumar and Titu Kumar, from whom the police actually recovered smack on October 27, were set free, the police registered a false case against my brother. The police let off Ashu without action, whereas Titu was forced to take Manish’s name in the case,” alleged Lucky Kumar.

“Manish was subsequently picked up on October 28. While both were released, Manish was framed in the case.” He alleged that the police did not allow them to meet Manish, raising suspicion about his health. “We knew something was wrong and therefore the police did not let us meet him,” he claimed.

Sangrur Duty Magistrate Tavleen Singh recorded the statements of the victim’s family. Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police Mandeep Singh Sidhu denied the allegations of physical torture and said the police had arrested Manish after smack was recovered from him.
