BJP kicks off ‘Badlo Dilli Padyatra’ today

New Delhi, November 12
Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel will tomorrow hit the street with an extensive 'Badlo Dilli Padyatra' all over the state. The padyatra will start from Lalbagh near Vijay Cinema in the Model Town constituency.

Addressing a press conference, Goel said, "The purpose of the yatra is to bring back the poor and marginalized sections of society into focus. The Congress has neglected them during its 15-year misrule. The Congress has further pushed them towards the fringes of development."

Goel said, "The anti-poor policies of the Congress will be exposed during this campaign, which will be undertaken in a large number of assembly segments. We will also share the BJP's vision for the uplift of the poor and marginalized sections of society."

He said, "The Food Security Scheme launched by the Congress is a non-starter and fell apart within a few weeks of its launch. The government has destroyed the Public Distribution System (PDS). When voted to power, the BJP will revamp the PDS in Delhi on the Chhattisgarh model, which has been hailed worldwide for its efficiency and success."

The Congress had claimed that the Food Security Scheme would provide cheap foodgrain to about 74 lakh people of Delhi. The poor are not getting the foodgrain as a majority of them have not even got the requisite food card.

"The BJP will provide affordable housing to the poor under its slogan, 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahin Makan'. The poor will not be displaced. The party will provide them all the basic civic amenities," Goel said.

Activists clamour for tickets

BJP activists from Madipur, Seelampur and Badarpur today protested at the Delhi BJP headquarters demanding tickets for the candidates of their choice.

Protestors of the Gihara community said that their community has always been ignored by the BJP. "Our national president Mohan Lal is a popular social worker in the area. He has a strong following. But instead of giving ticket to him, the party has chosen Kailash Sankhla.

Party workers from Badarpur demanded that the BJP should cancel the candidature of Ramvir Singh Bidhuri as he keeps changing the party. In the last election, he had contested on the Congress ticket and before that he was with the Nationalist Congress Party. He has also been with the Janta Dal.

The party has insulted its Badarpur workers by giving ticket to Bidhuri. They demanded ticket for Shri Chand Chokan.

The BJP has fielded Kaushal Mishra from the Seelampur assembly constituency, but the party activists are demanding the ticket for Sanjay Jain, sitting councillor and zone chairman.

They said Sanjay is a strong candidate. He can give a tough fight to the Congress candidate who has been winning the seat for the last four terms.

Cong rakes up 17-yr-old rape charge against Vardhan
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 12
The political fight for assembly polls in the city turned dirty today with the Congress raking up a 17-year-old allegation against BJP's chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan about the rape of a woman who worked at his residence.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and two of her Cabinet colleagues Harun Yusuf and Raj Kumar Chauhan raised the issue at a press conference at Dikshit's residence to reply to BJP's attack on the Delhi Government that it failed to check the growing incidents of rape in the city.

However, Vardhan said he does not consider it necessary to reply to such "wild and frivolous" allegations.

"Vardhan has raised the issue of rape incidents in Delhi. When as Health Minister in the BJP government in 1996, he could not ensure the safety of a woman, how can he ensure the security of women in entire Delhi," said Yusuf while referring to the BJP's billboards that said "Rok na paye balatkar, badlo Congress sarkar" (change the Congress government which failed to prevent rapes).

Dikshit said BJP's "misleading" campaign against the government forced the Congress to raise the 17-year-old allegation against Harsh Vardhan.

"We had to give an answer to their misleading campaign as they said we could not prevent incidents of rapes in the city," the Chief Minister said, replying to questions why such an old issue had been raked up.

The allegations against Vardhan were levelled in July 1996 that a maid was raped at his official residence. Vardhan was Health Minister then. The woman, who was an inmate at a women's home, had delivered a baby boy.

When the issue was raised in the Delhi Assembly, Vardhan had strongly denied the allegations and offered to undergo a DNA test.

Balli may get Cong ticket

Harsharan Singh Balli, the four-time BJP legislator from Hari Nagar, is most likely to contest on a Congress ticket in the upcoming December 4 Assembly elections, said sources in Congress party.

Hari Nagar has been the weakest constituency for the Congress in the past two decades, hence, the party has decided to float Balli's name. Though, the Congress in its first list of 56 candidates released yesterday, announced the name of Surender Kumar Setia as its official candidate from Hari Nagar. "A decision has been taken to revoke Setia's name," said a source.

Balli had protested to the BJP last week when the party refused him a ticket, citing his poor health as a deterrent in winning the seat. Balli has been in power as BJP MLA since 1993. He had contested the first election of erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 1977.

AAP ‘autocratic’; party dismisses rebel’s claims
Ananya Panda
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 12
An AAP rebel member Rakesh Agarwal, who in an open letter had questioned the party's governing agenda and Arvind Kejriwal's "autocratic style of working", today called for a decentralised and organisational democracy within the party.

Sharing his three-charter demands with the media, he stressed that the party should have a democratic set-up of functioning by holding internal elections and should not be a "one-man controlled show". It should refrain from vote bank politics and abolish all religion and caste-based cells such as the Sikh cell.

"AAP lacks a democratic governing agenda and once it comes to power and fails to deliver, people will lose faith in such movements. I demand that elections should be held and democracy in the party should be restored," he said, adding there having a Sikh cell in the party would only encourage vote bank politics.

Apparently peeved with the whole process of selection of candidates and posts given, he said, "Those who are holding posts have not been elected but nominated. I have raised the issue and written an open letter to Kejriwal, but have not received any reply, and if I don't get any reply by November 21, I will go on an indefinite fast."

However, AAP members said that the party works in a democratic manner. The party rubbished all his claims and stated that Rakesh Agarwal is not a member of any committee or functioning body in the party and had never been part of the party's any decision-making body.

Clarifying further, the AAP said it was only during a rally of autorickshaw drivers at Ramlila Maidan that he approached the party earlier this year and later, thousands of autorickshaw drivers approached Kejriwal and other AAP leaders, asking them not to keep any contact with Agarwal.

"He is not an active member of the party. He has done no service to the party," said the party leader Manish Sisodia.

According to the AAP, Agarwal, who claims to be the secretary of NGO Nyayabhoomi, is a "fraudster who has embezzled funds of his NGO and duped thousands of autorickshaw drivers on the pretext of getting them clearance from the transport authority”.
