Pathankot mining officer suspended:
The Punjab Government has suspended Dharampal Bhagat, General Manager-cum-Mining Officer of Pathankot district, for negligence in the wake of illegal sand mining in the area. Madan Mohan Mittal, Industries and Commerce Minister, said illegal mining would be dealt with sternly. He said the government was planning to form a special task force for the purpose, which would visit mining sites along with mining officers. He said more vehicles would be provided to field officers to carry out the exercise.

Tributes paid to Banda Bahadur :
Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, organised a seminar to celebrate the 344th birth anniversary of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur here on Thursday. Former SGPC chief prof Kirpal Singh Badungar presided over. Vice Chancellor Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia praised Baba Banda Bahadur for protecting the weak. Dr Sukhdial Singh, professor at Punjabi University, narrated how Banda Bahadur left a trail of destruction behind him when he avenged the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh’s sons.

Pakistani social activist awarded:
An international seminar on “Post NATO: Implication on India, Pakistan and Afghanistan”, was jointly organised by Folklore Research Academy, Amritsar, and Akhil Bharatiya Rachnatamic Sangh at Harpal Tiwana Centre for Performing Arts here on Thursday. Pakistani social activist Karamat Ali was presented the Didi Nirmala Deshpandey Memorial Award for his contribution towards promoting peace in South Asia. He is Director of the Institute of Labour and Employment, Karachi. Ali has been instrumental in securing the release of Indian fishermen from Pakistani jails

Bodies of drowned youths recovered:
The bodies of the two youths who had drowned in the Beas near Gagrewal village, 30 km from here, on Tuesday were recovered on Thursday. A joint search operation had been launched by the Punjab Police and divers from the Forest Department as well as private divers hired from Harike. The deceased, Harpreet Singh and Lovepreet Singh, belonged to Kishan Singh Wala village in Kapurthala.

Anganwadi staff on indefinite strike: Members of the Kul Hind Anganwadi Mulazam Workers Union started their indefinite dharna outside the office of the District Program Officer here on Thursday. The protesters have been demanding payment of their monthly remuneration due for the last six months. Union senior vice-president Beant Kaur claimed the government had not even paid the LPG charges incurred by them for cooking mid-day meals.

The local police registered a dowry harassment case against Anil Kumar, alias Vicky, of Dasuya (Punjab) and six members of his family in a dowry harassment case last evening. Ruchi started living with her parents after persistent dowry demand of her in-laws. — OC
