Cashless cure system for cancer patients begins
Faridkot, October 16 During her visit to the hospital today, Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Punjab, said the department has prepared a list of 100 commonly used cancer drugs and these will be purchased in bulk at highly competitive prices. Henceforth, every cancer patient will be provided these drugs cashless in the hospital, leaving no scope for overpricing and depriving the needy cancer patients of access to drugs for lack of money. Earlier, a cancer patient was to purchase the drugs from his own pocket and later, the amount was to be reimbursed by the health department under the CM's Cancer Relief Fund to a maximum extent of Rs 1.5 lakh for each patient. The owner of the five chemist shops was arrested last week after he allegedly fleeced over 600 cancer patients by selling them cancer and auxiliary drugs at highly inflated prices to misuse the CM's Cancer Relief Fund. Mahajan was accompanied by Dr KK Talwar, adviser to the Punjab Government for Health and Medical Education, and the chairman and members of the Board of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS). Mahajan and Dr Talwar suggested that the medical college and university be made self-reliant as the state government was facing a financial crunch. Notably, three weeks back, on September 22, the BFUHS had demanded Rs 500 crore from the Punjab CM as assistance during his visit to the medical university. "We are not averse to charging all those for the medical services who can afford to help those who can't pay," said Dr KK Talwar when a doctor in the medicine department raised the demand for providing subsidised dialysis facility to the kidney patients on the pattern of Haryana and Rajasthan. |

PIO fined for delay in providing information
Bathinda, October 16 State Information Commissioner Jaspal Kaur has also asked the PIO to provide Rs 2,000 as a compensation to the applicant for the "detriment suffered by him on account of delay in providing information". The deadline of paying the fine is October 31, which is the next date of hearing. The Commissioner noted that the respondent not only delayed but also did not appear before the Commission. The PIO when summoned sent the information sought by the applicant, Harmandar Singh, to the Commission. The information was provided after over a year of submission of the application. Harmandar had sought information regarding the salary of teachers in the school to ascertain the family income of the candidates who had applied for the gazetted post of Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) advertised by the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) in the category of backward classes. The reservation was not meant for the creamy layer in the said category whose annual family income was more than Rs 4.5 lakh at the time of applying for the post in 2011. Harmandar alleged that he had sought the information to see if one of the candidates fell in the creamy layer or not but to his surprise the information was delayed till the State Information Commission intervened. However, despite sending several reminders, the information was not provided. The applicant moved the Commission for getting the information as well as for imposing fine of Rs 25,000 on the PIO under section 20 (i) of the Right to Information Act. The Commissioner stated in the order that after going through the pleadings and documents on record and because several opportunities were provided to the PIO in vain, the Commissioner finds it a fit case for imposing the fine. |

50 rice mills in Ajitwal boycott purchase, lifting of paddy
Ajitwal (Moga), October 16 They held a meeting in this regard at Ajitwal on Wednesday and alleged that the food and civil supplies department has reduced the quota of paddy of 28 mills on the basis of land/space available with them instead of taking into consideration the milling capacity. As per the normal practice across the state prevailing for the past many years, the quota of paddy is allotted on the basis of the milling capacity of the rice mill. “The food and civil supplies department has reduced the quota just to harass the millers. This gives rise to corruption, a widely known phenomenon in the industry,” the millers alleged. They have given an ultimatum to the state government to revise the quota of these mills, which has already completed 100 per cent milling of the previous stock, on or before October 21, failing which they would close the doors of their mills for storing the paddy. So far, they had not stored even a single bag of paddy on their premises even 16 days after the beginning
of the official purchase of paddy. Alleging discrimination, they questioned why the department has reduced the quota of 28 mills on the basis of space available with them. Why the criteria has not been applicable to other mills of the district or the state, they asked. They further alleged that under the patronage of the ruling party leaders, even the mills which had not completed 100 per cent milling of the previous year’s stock, had been allotted paddy. “We are doing business sincerely. Then why is the government harassing us,” they added. Munish Kumar, Vikas Jindal and other millers said they had got extra load of power to run their mills to their full capacity for which they were paying more to the power corporation, besides hiring additional labour to meet the deadline. Therefore, they should have been considered on priority for adequate paddy allotment on the basis of their milling capacity. |
