Being woman at male-dominated workplace no easy job: NFL CMD
Bathinda, September 16 Having completed her chartered accountancy (CA) course in 1981, Neeru joined the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) as junior manager (Finance) and left as the general manager (Finance) to join the NFL, the second largest producer of nitrogenous fertilizers. She was elevated as the CMD in August this year. Recounting her journey in the male-dominated world, Neeru said for her first interview at the SAIL, she was asked the reason company should hire her. "The interviewee was skeptical about hiring me. He said I would leave the organisation within two to three years after getting married. I reasoned that this may hold true in the case of a male employee as well," said Neeru, who went on to spend 26 years at the SAIL. A native of Delhi, Neeru's work takes her places and she is on a constant move. Being at the helm of affairs of the NFL, she now looks forward to completion of feedstock conversion project from fuel oil to natural gas at the three plants of the company - Panipat, Bathinda and Nangal. "Completion of this switching over is a challenge for us as the country does not have enough supply of natural gas to meet the requirements. In the fertiliser manufacturing industry, energy accounts for 85 per cent of the total cost. Usage of natural gas means cleaner fuel and lesser cost. We have already converted our Vijaipur plants," she said. Neeru added that the issues of getting payments cleared from the Central Government were on the top of her list of priorities. The MRP of urea is merely 20 per cent of its cost. "We are not getting the subsidy payments from the Central Government on time. The payments pertaining to the period from October 2012 to May 2013 were received in May and now, we are pursuing for the rest of payments. This is mainly happening because the allocation of budget for fertilizers in the Union budget is less than the actual requirement," she added. Know the achiever |
